Translator's Note

The Chinese word for “King” is Wang. There is no equivalent in the English language for this – it’s a rank above a Duke but less than an Emperor. Sort of like a vassal king, but also not exactly, a Wang is usually related to the Emperor by blood, but a vassal king usually is not. There are some “Kings of a different surname” which are not related to the Imperial family by blood, but are appointed as a Wang nonetheless because they had rendered truly extraordinary service to the Imperial family or the Emperor himself. An example of such a “King of a different surname” in this story is the Phoenix King. I’ve chosen to translate Wang as “King” in this novel for consistency with the nomenclature for the Phoenix King.

Translator's Note

In ancient Chinese funerals, there is a practice called shou ling (守灵), which literally means to guard the soul. The belief is that the soul was still around the body for three days after death, so the family and friends would accompany the soul until the body was buried. This practice is still done today, with some modifications for religious beliefs.

  8. Here I thought Brown Berry was the worst name this abused child would ever get! Sigh. Zimo has had to grow tough in his short life. I hope he can finally give his poor mother a proper burial soon! Though I was a bit worried that feather would have been used up with just one use! I’m glad that worry was unfounded. 😅

    I’m also very glad to see our little fairy get out of that den of snakes so quickly! A son who kills his father for the throne (I mean, c’mon, your father hand picked you for that position despite going against the explicit wishes of the ritual!) is not a safe place for anyone.

    • I’m not too worried about Qiqi considering the fact that he has always shown himself to be cunning and hiding his tail from almost everyone. It’s better to tell the ‘not-chosen-by-the-phoenix-king’ Tiande emperor to watch his back or he might find himself without a throne hahahaha

  10. Thanks for the chapter! Based on how relaxed the high priest and his brother are, and the small theatres, I’m assuming Papa Cloud Palace happily tossed everything on to Dan Yi and went out to enjoy early retirement…. The crown prince almost certainly poisoned his father.

  11. LOL Dan Yi is ready to be married already. I can imagine him being sullen thinking about Ziqi all day. Whooooowee those teenage mood swings must have been difficult to handle.
