Translator's Note

The hues change colors akin to a ashen dog (斯须改变如苍狗) – si xu gaibian ru cang gou is a line from Tang Dynasty Du Fu’s poem《可叹》ke tan (apprx. “Of a Sigh”). First referenced in Chapter 4.

  6. So does that mean the Mu He in the original story fell in love at first sight with Xie Zhiwie but he abandoned him but Mu he wouldn’t forget him even Xie Zhiwie “abandoned” him and he died so the only way to forget him is to find his own light in his dark life? ……..

    Sorry just theorizing/Speculating here hehe

    • for me it’s like their love story never had a chance to blossom in the original novel. it’s more like xie zhiwei was the 1 Good Thing wood box found in a long, long time after everything turned to crap, so he naturally likes and wants more XZW. but in the end XZW threw him to the bai father and son who abused him and tried to kill him (both in his first life and rebirth), so whatever good feelings he would’ve had turned into resentment.

      there’s a scene in the sister novel This Daoist is Just an Actor where he zheng and xie zhiwei (as xie zhi) need to act out a scene where XZW rejects wood box as his disciple; in the end they both get into it and XZW is so moved he actually says “yes” before the director yells at him for getting his lines wrong.

      so they reshoot and XZW rejects wood box, but when he goes back to the bamboo forest, he’s crying. oops went on a tangent there but i thought of it this way:

      if, after a long period of despair, the one thing that gives you hope is also the thing that sent you back into despair, perhaps the only way to get out of that “what-if” and “but why did hope abandon me” mentality is to become your own hope and strength in the world. otherwise, just thinking of what could have been would depress you.
