Little Cat PlanetCh6 - Sea of Fishes.

The Wolf Planet’s sky was dark with no sight of starlight. Faint soul-chilling wails could be heard from the distance.

Pei Qinghe had changed back to his usually adorable puppy self.  XhkrgM

The puppy’s eyes were dropping, like small grapes.

But Yan Jiang had learned to be smart.

He stepped two steps back and asked fiercely, “Who are you!”

“Pei Qinghe.” 6IPnwE

“Don’t come closer,” The back of his fur stood up in alert. “Who is Pei Qinghe!”

Pei Qinghe obediently sat in place. “Pei Qinghe is Yan Jiang’s puppy.”

Yan Jiang did not believe a single word. Pei Qinghe was not a dog, but a wolf.

He walked with his head down until he reached the edge of the white whale’s body.

The puppy was obviously feeling anxious. “Yan Jiang!”

He fidgeted, looking like he was on the verge of moving forward but always stopped himself.

Yan Jiang looked down at the sea.

In the dark sea, he could vaguely see red floating corpses, one after another.  ufgon3

The corpses were soaked in water for too long, fresh flowers and leaves grew out of their mouths and noses.

A piece of the white whale’s flesh was torn by the bloody flying fish, and dark blue blood gushed out like.

The scent of blood was like a signal. From all corners, the blood corpses degenerated into fish, scrambled to tear more flesh from the white whale.

Yan Jiang was finally able to see clearly. The fishes were not fishes. It was like an undeveloped baby embryo in a mother’s womb, limbless like a tadpole with undeveloped eyes.

The fishes were like raindrops, jumped again after hitting the water, creating splashes after splashes.  VLF09H

After a long time, the rain of fishes finally stopped.

Yan Jiang was still in shock. He looked back and called out in a trembling voice, “Pei Qinghe?”

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

Pei Qinghe was nowhere to be seen.

Pei Qinghe was the first sight Yan Jiang saw when he broke free from his egg. He never thought that one day, his knight would leave him.  oYbdyx

“Pei Qinghe!” The kitten cried, “Where are you? Pei Qinghe.”

Yan Jiang ran forward while crying. Suddenly, voices sounded in this empty world.

The road on the ground was paved with uneven slate. Because of the recent rain, there were puddles between cracks. The stream of people insensitively passed through him.

Yan Jiang looked around and saw the sign above his head: Changping Farmers Market.  Amydg0

Since he lived in a sheltered and pampered life, he had never been to a farmers market.

The farmers market had a different kind of noise and messy after the rain. Displayed at the meat stall, the white pig’s large intestines were hanging freely on the hook and dripping pale red water on the white tiles. The chicken with its belly ripped open was put on the chopping board with its two legs facing upward.

The customer bargained with the butcher in a dialect he did not understand.

The kitten followed the crowd, walking aimlessly forward.  o8zt4T

The farmers market was in a narrow crossroads, like a four square court in the playground.

In the corner, Yan Jiang found Pei Qinghe.

A seafood stall.

Pei Qinghe, who was wearing a waterproof apron, squatted in front of a narrow stool and did his homework before the sun set.  FI 56K

He looked to be about twelve or thirteen of age.

In front of him were two large plastic basins, one containing fresh fish, and another containing swimming eels. Behind the narrow stall were an outmoded television and organised dry goods. Not sure where the electricity was hooked from, but it was connected to the light bulb as it glowed in faint yellow. Even the gas was almost burnt out but the owner was too reluctant to change it.

Pei Qinghe had a good appearance even as a child. His clothes were dirty and his shoes were plastic in bright colour. His hair was a mess, and his long and slender limbs were like bamboo that grew too fast. Yan Jiang could spot a exquisite beauty from Pei Qinghe’s dispirited face.

A moment later, a tall middle-aged man dismounted from the tricycle with a basket of fish goods.  iQf0OT

The newcomer’s appearance was terrifying, like a punishment guardian deity from the underworld.

Pei Qinghe stood up and called, “Father.”

He took two steps forward to help carry the basket. The man kicked his chest instead. “Your homeroom teacher called me and said you got into a fight again at school?”

Pei Qinghe flew half a metre backwards, and his clean white vest was stained with mud.  cdl1Gv

The owners of the surrounding stall immediately exclaimed, “Old Pei! What are you doing? Don’t hit your kid!”

The middle-aged man showed an apologetic face before dragging Pei Qinghe into the house and slammed the door.

“How the hell can I afford the medical expenses? Do you know who you got into a fight with? He is the son of the head of the city manager!”

Then he kicked the young boy again.  ecUoGz

Pei Qinghe’s chest, where his father kicked, was in burning pain. He protected his stomach and said nothing. He was trembling in pain, but refused to shed tears.

Yan Jiang suddenly felt distressed.

He angrily extended his claw and scratched at the man’s leg. “Stop bullying my dog!”

Unfortunately, he had no substance here. It was natural for him to do no damage.  MVXON8

The more the man thought, the angrier he became. He picked up a wooden stick and hit Pei Qinghe. The sound of the impact created by the stick was painful to listen to.

He scolded Pei Qinghe, but what he thought about more were the unhappiness in his life.

Once he was tired from beating Pei Qinghe, he spat on the ground. “Reading, reading, all you do is read and it’s rotting your brain. Reading is useless. I can’t even afford to send you to high school.”

“You are better off on your own.” z85DXW

Translator's Note

Game ball game played among four players on a square court divided into quadrants. This is the closest description I can come up with that looks like the farm word in Chinese ‘田’. The original raw is ‘the farmers market as a whole was like the ‘farm’ word.
