Green Plum IslandCh58 - Extra 5

Ye Chen

Ye Chen and Yan Kongshan were best friends in high school. Although they went to different universities, their friendship persisted and they remained in contact. Occasionally, they would host reunions with their old high school friends and go out drinking and eating together. gRdJ5u

From the time he was a child, Yan Kongshan was an excellent student. He got into the School of International Studies, then got an internship in the foreign ambassador department, and then became a field worker in Cape Verde—his life progressed smoothly, step by step according to plans. No one ever doubted that he would become an excellent diplomat; it was a given.

After college, Ye Chen started his own company. With him buried in his own work and Yan Kongshan stationed overseas with a nine-hour time difference between them, it was not convenient for them to talk often and thus, they went a year communicating only via short, succinct texts, one sending a message in the morning and the other replying at night.

Ye Chen recalled quite clearly the two times Yan Kongshan called him over the course of that year. The first time was to announce that he was in a relationship with someone over ten years his senior. He had said he was serious and thinking about marriage.

At the time, Ye Chen had been startled. fpPjUw

“Aren’t you in Cape Verde? Is your partner foreign?”

“No, my boss,” Yan Kongshan said, his voice calm.

“…Why am I not the least bit surprised?” Ye Chen remarked. He even added, “As expected of you.”

They chatted for a few more minutes, and eventually the conversation turned to Yan Xinyu. Yan Kongshan asked Ye Chen to help him take care of her.

xQjyfG

“You know my sister, always so impenetrable. It’s not easy for her to raise a kid alone, so help me watch over her once in a while. You’re single anyway, it wouldn’t cause problems.”

There was a slight suggestion in Yan Kongshan’s words, and Ye Chen hung up the phone, feeling troubled. He liked Yan Xinyu; since high school, from the time she was someone else’s girlfriend. He had never told anyone before, but Yan Kongshan knew him so well that he probably guessed it a long time ago.

Right after Yan Xinyu broke up with Ding Baizhou, he had gone to visit her a few times in Yan Kongshan’s name, but in the end had not gathered the courage to pursue her. She was beautiful and capable, an ideal woman in everyone’s eyes, and he was a nobody with nothing to speak for—he didn’t even know if his startup was going to be successful. With what would he pursue her?

And so his fingers stopped over the digits on the phone for a long time, but eventually moved away. In the end, he didn’t make the call. 5PCLqW

This fleeting decision became the greatest regret of his life.

Three months later, Yan Kongshan called for a second time, and this time his tone was so heavy, it was frightening. In all the years Ye Chen had known him, he had never sounded like this before.

Yan Xinyu had gotten into a car accident. A vehicle had lost control and rammed into the taxi she was in from behind; the entire backseat of the taxi was smashed into deformity. She and her daughter were both seriously injured, both of them in the hospital being resuscitated.

“I can’t get back right now. Ye Chen…can you go to the hospital for me? My aunt is there alone and I’m afraid she can’t handle it all.” XMI7iu

The rest of this memory came only in fragments to him—crashing down the stairs of his apartment building, scrambling around looking for his car in the garage, locating it, settling into the car… and then he suddenly wasn’t sure whether to press the brake first or switch the gears. It was true, one’s mind goes blank in moments of high stress.

In the end, they never got Yan Xinyu back, and Yan Kongshan didn’t get to see her one last time.

Ye Chen had a hard time believing the gods would be so merciless. Yan Xinyu was so young, her child was only eight months old, and the man who abandoned her was still having the time of his life somewhere overseas. Yet all she could do was lie on the ice cold hospital bed as the Death God stole her life away bit by bit.

After Yan Kongshan came back to the country, he never left. In his grief, Ye Chen had forgotten to ask him whatever happened to his older lover. It wasn’t until at least a year later than Yan Kongshan told him that they’d ended things. She could not abandon her career, he could not abandon his family. They were not meant to be together.

“Maybe she never meant to go all the way with me anyway.” Yan Kongshan smiled bitterly and took a gulp of his beer. “I’m too young for her.”

Ye Chen didn’t know how to console him—his own love life was a hot mess as it was. All he could do was drink with him. 2d5DTU

The two of them had a lot to drink. Wasted, Yan Kongshan blabbed and spoke a lot of nonsense, such as swearing that he would never marry, and that he didn’t need love. What confused Ye Chen the most was when Yan Kongshan grabbed his arm and asked, “Am I seriously that clingy?”

Question marks filled Ye Chen’s mind. Clingy? How in the world had such a label landed on Yan Kongshan’s head? But Ye Chen was drunk then too, and his head was killing him, so he suspected that his friend had meant to say “aloof” instead of “clingy” and gotten the two words mixed up.

The next morning, sober again, Yan Kongshan was back to being Yan Kongshan, and no clues could be discerned from him. He was as cool as always. Ye Chen decided that he was drunk and heard wrong and didn’t pursue the matter.

Not long after, Yan Kongshan said he was sick of the city and that he was moving to Green Plum Island in order to provide Yan Wanqiu a better environment for growing up. The island had good air and simple-minded locals; Ye Chen recalled that Yan Xinyu had loved the place and wanted to retire there. ELu4Dd

In the next three years, Ye Chen would often go visit Yan Kongshan and Yan Wanqiu. Even though Yan Kongshan was as loved by women as always, he seemed truly determined to not date or dabble around with love. Instead, he focused on raising Yan Wanqiu and running his used bookstore.

Ye Chen had no opinion on this matter. Although Auntie Xu always wanted him to persuade Yan Kongshan to get married, he didn’t even know if he himself would be able to get married in this life, let alone going to persuade others.

***

The third year Yan Kongshan went off to the island, Ye Chen’s company received a major order in the summer and that kept him busy for several months. By the time he was done, it was already October. He decided it would be the perfect time to go to the island to pay his old friend a visit. x7hPBS

When he called Yan Kongshan, the first half of their conversation proceeded as usual; when it came time to hang up however, the man on the other end suddenly dropped a bomb on him.

“I’m in a relationship, my partner’s just started university. And it’s a boy.” It was the same calm, almost monotone voice, as if he was talking about the weather.

Ye Chen drew back his phone to check the screen, struck by the wild notion that this was a scam caller. But then he remembered he was the one who made the call; this was definitely Yan Kongshan.

“You’re finally dating? And it’s with a guy?” This was a million times more shocking than Yan Kongshan announcing that he was dating an older woman. wcmGFi

He always assumed that if the man ever started dating again, he would find an attractive, long-haired woman who was a bit older than him, but now… he’s gay?

This was a complete 180 from the Yan Kongshan that he knew. “I always thought even if I turned gay, you would never,” Ye Chen remarked.

Yan Kongshan started laughing. As he spoke, his voice turned gentle. “It’s not that I wasn’t firm, he was just too good.”

Ye Chen was incredibly curious what kind of person could bend Yan Kongshan. “Tell me about this impressive character,” he asked. svm1iS

After pondering it for a few minutes, Yan Kongshan replied, “Clean, pretty, obedient, easy to talk to. When we’re alone, all I want to do is kiss him…”

This was an impressive level of dog food right here.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Ye Chen was about to regret even asking; he could find out for himself about this person by visiting, why subject himself to such torment?

As he was thinking this, Yan Kongshan added, “I gave the watch my sister gave me to him.” 4pdw6O

Ye Chen froze in surprise. “You gave that watch to him?”

He knew about the watch; Yan Xinyu had spent a lot of money on it, a gift for getting into college. Even though it was just an entry-level watch, it was the most Yan Xinyu could manage at that time. He had never seen Yan Kongshan wear this watch since she passed away, yet now, not only had he taken it out once again, he’d given it to someone.

“You must really like him.” If Ye Chen had had any remaining doubts, they dispersed upon learning that Yan Kongshan had gifted his precious watch. He would never have done that if the other person was not extraordinarily special.

“I think he’s the one.” The statement comes suddenly, out of the blue. wNgVpR

Ye Chen didn’t ask what he meant, because it was easy for him to figure it out himself——”He” was the one, for life.

“After just a few months?”

“It’s enough.”

*** kyS63L

Three years later, Yan Kongshan’s relationship with his lover was as steady and sweet as ever. Ye Chen went to the island every couple months to meet up with Yan Kongshan, and if he happened to go on a weekend, he’d drive Yan Kongshan’s little boyfriend back to his school.

Through this time, Ye Chen understood why Yan Kongshan would ask him whether he was “clingy” all those years ago when they had been drunk. As soon as he fell in love, the man was like a demon of passion, constantly wanting to hug and kiss. Ye Chen once asked him carefully why the passion was still so strong after three years of dating, but the other party simply turned his gaze towards the living room where the other two—one big, one small—were in the middle of a video game.

He didn’t seem to know the answer either. “People used to say this about me even before, as soon as I get into a relationship, I become clingy.”

Ye Chen smiled, guessing that the one who told him that was his former lover. “So this is just your nature?” C7Jm2T

“No,” Yan Kongshan shook his head. “I don’t think I had this problem before. My ex was older than me and she was also my boss, she didn’t like public displays of intimacy because she was afraid people would notice. In her position, it was understandable to think that way.”

“I was always a normal ‘boyfriend,’ at least that’s what I think.” He paused, as if thinking of how to word his next thoughts. “But ever since getting together with Yu Mian, I’ve come to find that she was right… I’m so clingy that I even shock myself.”

“I can’t seem to be apart from him, ever since the first time we kissed.”

In the past, Ye Chen would never have believed that his friend would be so clingy in a relationship, but later on, he came to witness it with his very own eyes a great many times, so that there was absolutely no room for doubt. H0GJ5q

Such as right now.

Ye Chen tapped his steering wheel with an index finger, trying to resist rolling his eyes. “Enough already,” he urged Yan Kongshan, “if we don’t leave, Yu Mian’s dorm gate is going to shut on him.”

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Yan Kongshan appeared too invested in making out to hear him, or he was pretending not to hear him. His body was hanging in the car through the window as he kissed the pretty young man sitting in the passenger seat.

The young man was wearing a white shirt, his unbuckled seatbelt still clutched in his hands. The kiss rendered him into an awkward position and his face was crimson red. In the beginning he just meant for this to be a simple goodbye kiss; he did not expect Yan Kongshan would kiss him like this right in front of someone. CvwiDr

Ye Chen felt sorry for the boy. He shook his head internally and warned, “I’m gonna roll the window up if you don’t stop kissing him.”

At last, Yan Kongshan responded. He slowly removed the hands he had around the young man’s face, then released his swollen, red lips, then tilted his head and sent Ye Chen a glare.

“Single dogs have dog rights too, mister,” Ye Chen said with a fake smile.

Yan Kongshan retracted his gaze and turned back to his young boyfriend, taking in the boy’s large, dazed eyes and flushed face. He still hadn’t managed to slip his seatbelt on. Yan Kongshan’s eyes became exceedingly gentle. fc eha

He took the seatbelt out of the boy’s hands and buckled it for him, then said, “Safe journey.” With that, he took two steps back, his gaze fixed firmly on the young man.

Said young man lived up to his name—whether in personality or in his voice, he was soft and fluffy like a ball of cotton. Although he was already in his twenties, there was a pureness that emanated from him, giving people the impression that he was younger than he was.

“See you next week.” The young man’s voice was a bit hoarse, likely due to all the kissing.

It wasn’t as if Ye Chen was really going to stop them; he didn’t roll up the window until the car had long left the small road. rVjO0m

Music blasted from the radio in the car, interspersed with a few philosophical comments made by the female radio host. When they were well on their way, a message notification suddenly rang from the passenger seat.

The young man took his phone out and broke into a smile, immediately tapping out a reply to the other party. It happened to be a red light, so Ye Chen watched the young man smugly.

“Text from Ah Shan?” he guessed.

The boy glanced at him and smiled shyly. “Yes.” 2ezcST

“What a clingy fellow,” Ye Chen couldn’t help retorting.

The young man put his phone back on his lap. For whatever reason, Ye Chen’s words made him smile so widely that his eyes curved into half-moons.

“He is a little clingy, but I like it.”

TN: Now we’re done for good! This chapter is really rough but I’m at the point where I just really want to finish this novel xD 6OjdkH

  20. Ye Chen is such a bestie!

    This is Absolutely Wonderful!

Very Sad the power is gone now. But everyone is very supportive about their relationship, so it’s all very good!

    A very Wonderful Story!

I think it’s my first time read Slice of life Danmei Novel… The story pace was interesting.

Thank you so much for the hardworks!!! 🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇

  21. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful story of Mianmian and his pursuit of happiness in the form of his family in Green Plum Island. Because of how wonderful this story is, it gave me the urge to write a review in novelup. Nothing much but my heartfelt thanks. Stay safe. Thank you.

  22. Thank you for translating!!

Mianmian and all the others were so adorable I’m sad that this story came to an end

  23. haa this ending is satisfying.. I’m still wondering why he never told Yan Kongshan about his synesthesia(??? or something??? forgot the name) but stilllllll this is so good TT

  24. This was so cute! And the translation is also top notch. Thanks for translating it ❤️ I’ll definitely come back to reread.

  25. Sigh this is the first I’m really hoping for more chapters. Thank you for all the hard work.

  26. Thank you so much for this! I just couldn’t stop reading! Read it all in like one day!

  27. Like. Sheet. Why did I hold myself up for so long from reading this amazing novel??? But then again, it is also a blessing because I was able to binge read this in one sitting.

IT’S SOOOO FREAAAAKIN CUTE!!!! ITS SO COMFORTABLE READING IT. THANK YOU TO THE TRANSLATOR AND CG TEAM FOR THE WORK!

I was quite sad though, we never get to have a mention about how the side characters are even in passing; how Sun Rui and Wen Ying fared, if Xiao Hua get together with her kitties in the bookstore. But all in all. a succint book where the emotional development has been fascinating to read. Definitely will reread this again.

  28. This is such a beautiful novel ahhhhhhhh

And Mian Mian is right, if you really, truly like someone, you’ll just find them to be enthusiastic and very affectionate. Not clingy. This concept only exists where the love isn’t strong enough. Speaking from personal experience 😬

  29. Thank you so much for your hard work! This story was so so cute, I found myself smiling like a idiot so many times throughout the story 😊

  30. OMG. So fast? I’m not ready yet 😭

Thank you so much for translating and sharing this story with us 💙

  31. This is another comfort novel for me ❤ Sigh I really wish it can be physically published in English… Thank you so much for the god tier translation!

  32. Thank you so much for translating this wonderful story! I love it and binge-read this in two days! I just couldn’t stop smiling. I really like the MC’s way of doing things and that he was soft but not brittle. It’s rare to find bls with the ml having issues instead of mc.

  33. Wah this was so flipping cute. Thanks sm for the translation 🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️🥰❤️❤️❤️🥰🥰🥰

  34. Thanks for bringing this wonderful story to me! I was reluctant at first since I only read novels with chapter above or around 100, but this short(?) one proved to be great with my current schedule and I was also in for a great ride! In fact, I’ve already dropped the thoughts of reading this before… yeah I’m picky about so many things, and I’m just happy that I chose to read this and I was in a rollercoaster while reading this! Once on the verge of crying, also laughing like a madman, then most of time embarrassed from Mian Mian’s seductive moves for Ah Shan. The only thing I might have wanted but would never get is MM disclosing his ability to Ah Shan. I wonder what would be his reaction when he finds out that the 18 year old boy actually knew you were lusting for him even before! This became long, so I would have to stop here and say thanks again for translating this!
  35. estuvo muy hermosa la historia hasta el punto que no pude dormir y en el rechazo del ml me sentí tan mal, sentí que mi kokoro se rompía en pedazos y fue una emoción que nunca antes había sentido así que la novela me marcó completamente

  36. AAAAAAAAA I am so gonna miss them so so bad! Mian Mian, Ah Shan, Quiqui, Grandpa, and Sun

Rui! This novel is just so wholesome, it is super soft that my heart just keeps on melting.

Thank you for the author for writing such a cute story and super thank you for our amazibg translator hhhhhhhh 🥺🧡

  37. I love this novel! It was amazing!

I just wish there was another extra regarding their marriage 💑…

I will miss Mian Mian and his lover!

The girl was extremely cute as well!❤💕💕

  38. So cute, so cute, so cute!!! Ahhh, thank you for translating this novel, you’ve worked hard~

This has become one my favorite novels, it really good. I love their development and fluffiness; I love all the supporting characters!

Qiuqiu, Sun Rui, grandpa and granny are just so wholesome!

And the chemistry between Yan Kongshan and Yu Mian is absolutely wonderful.

    Full points! Thank you~

  39. I have always put off this novel because I felt it was too mature for my taste, after months of debating, turns out it wasnt. Thank you for the novel translator-sama <3

  40. OWKDJEJJDKDKEJEHFJRHRHU THANK YOU FOR TRANSLATING THIS NOVEL AHHHHHH SHIRO IS A PUDDLE OF GOO NOW… (ノ≧∇≦)ノ ミ ┻━┻

  41. I cant say enough how much i loved it!!!!! It was so so soooo good. Such a great time reading it.aaaahhh wish it could be longer but loved it anyways. A big THANK YOU for translating u r the bestest 💜💜 (and if i could I’ll definitely support the author)

  42. I kept seeing this book being mentioned, yet for some reason I delayed reading it. Delayed gratification haha 😂 Such a lovely novel with just the right amount of fluff. Thank you for taking the time to translate this!

  43. thank you so much for translating this beautiful novel 💗 I really loved ittt !!!

  44. Thank you for quality translation. I really enjoy reading this one. Beautiful story. ❤️

  45. This final extra chapter is indispensable really. I gave us a glimpse to a slight bit of YKS’ p.o.v. So good~ so fluffy~ I’m super grateful towards the translator-san for picking up this novel and made such a beautiful job on it. xxx ♡

  46. I still don’t like YKS. Giving this 3.5 on NU later. The book is not that bad but if I would be given a chance to read it again for the first time, I will advice myself not to read this.

Their relationship is technically good and it turn out well. But I just think that YM could deserve a better guy or at least just once, YKS could chase YM back. YKS just stand there being serve of a platter named YM and he has the nerve to reject it a lot of times. When some other people gonna eat it then he’s reluctantly gonna snatch it back. The food even has to coax him to eat it.

For me he’s just a lucky guy who received the blessing name Yu Mian without giving any effort. What’s so good about him anyway? It’s not like he’s that chaste and precious. 🤮

  47. Just read the whole story in one go! This was the most beautifully done translation I’ve ever read. I kept questioning if it was a particularly well done original novel. Beautiful translation, beautiful story. Thanks so much for it!

  48. SINGLE 🗣️DOGS 🗣️HAVE 🗣️RIGHTS🗣️ TOO🗣️

i literally feel soooooo single during and after reading sigh when will it be my turn… anw thank u for the beautiful translations 💞

  49. aww now I want a happy ending for Ye-Chen😢, and I wish they went further into the future cause I really don’t see a diplomat as the MC”s career but whatever and I wanted to see the young smart girl all grown up and them still together ugh so cute but too short😭😍
