Ye Chen and Yan Kongshan were best friends in high school. Although they went to different universities, their friendship persisted and they remained in contact. Occasionally, they would host reunions with their old high school friends and go out drinking and eating together.

“Aren’t you in Cape Verde? Is your partner foreign?”
“No, my boss,” Yan Kongshan said, his voice calm.

They chatted for a few more minutes, and eventually the conversation turned to Yan Xinyu. Yan Kongshan asked Ye Chen to help him take care of her.
“You know my sister, always so impenetrable. It’s not easy for her to raise a kid alone, so help me watch over her once in a while. You’re single anyway, it wouldn’t cause problems.”
There was a slight suggestion in Yan Kongshan’s words, and Ye Chen hung up the phone, feeling troubled. He liked Yan Xinyu; since high school, from the time she was someone else’s girlfriend. He had never told anyone before, but Yan Kongshan knew him so well that he probably guessed it a long time ago.
Right after Yan Xinyu broke up with Ding Baizhou, he had gone to visit her a few times in Yan Kongshan’s name, but in the end had not gathered the courage to pursue her. She was beautiful and capable, an ideal woman in everyone’s eyes, and he was a nobody with nothing to speak for—he didn’t even know if his startup was going to be successful. With what would he pursue her?
And so his fingers stopped over the digits on the phone for a long time, but eventually moved away. In the end, he didn’t make the call.

The rest of this memory came only in fragments to him—crashing down the stairs of his apartment building, scrambling around looking for his car in the garage, locating it, settling into the car… and then he suddenly wasn’t sure whether to press the brake first or switch the gears. It was true, one’s mind goes blank in moments of high stress.
In the end, they never got Yan Xinyu back, and Yan Kongshan didn’t get to see her one last time.

After Yan Kongshan came back to the country, he never left. In his grief, Ye Chen had forgotten to ask him whatever happened to his older lover. It wasn’t until at least a year later than Yan Kongshan told him that they’d ended things. She could not abandon her career, he could not abandon his family. They were not meant to be together.
“Maybe she never meant to go all the way with me anyway.” Yan Kongshan smiled bitterly and took a gulp of his beer. “I’m too young for her.”
Ye Chen didn’t know how to console him—his own love life was a hot mess as it was. All he could do was drink with him.
The two of them had a lot to drink. Wasted, Yan Kongshan blabbed and spoke a lot of nonsense, such as swearing that he would never marry, and that he didn’t need love. What confused Ye Chen the most was when Yan Kongshan grabbed his arm and asked, “Am I seriously that clingy?”
Question marks filled Ye Chen’s mind. Clingy? How in the world had such a label landed on Yan Kongshan’s head? But Ye Chen was drunk then too, and his head was killing him, so he suspected that his friend had meant to say “aloof” instead of “clingy” and gotten the two words mixed up.
The next morning, sober again, Yan Kongshan was back to being Yan Kongshan, and no clues could be discerned from him. He was as cool as always. Ye Chen decided that he was drunk and heard wrong and didn’t pursue the matter.
Not long after, Yan Kongshan said he was sick of the city and that he was moving to Green Plum Island in order to provide Yan Wanqiu a better environment for growing up. The island had good air and simple-minded locals; Ye Chen recalled that Yan Xinyu had loved the place and wanted to retire there.
In the next three years, Ye Chen would often go visit Yan Kongshan and Yan Wanqiu. Even though Yan Kongshan was as loved by women as always, he seemed truly determined to not date or dabble around with love. Instead, he focused on raising Yan Wanqiu and running his used bookstore.
Ye Chen had no opinion on this matter. Although Auntie Xu always wanted him to persuade Yan Kongshan to get married, he didn’t even know if he himself would be able to get married in this life, let alone going to persuade others.

The third year Yan Kongshan went off to the island, Ye Chen’s company received a major order in the summer and that kept him busy for several months. By the time he was done, it was already October. He decided it would be the perfect time to go to the island to pay his old friend a visit.
When he called Yan Kongshan, the first half of their conversation proceeded as usual; when it came time to hang up however, the man on the other end suddenly dropped a bomb on him.
“I’m in a relationship, my partner’s just started university. And it’s a boy.” It was the same calm, almost monotone voice, as if he was talking about the weather.
Ye Chen drew back his phone to check the screen, struck by the wild notion that this was a scam caller. But then he remembered he was the one who made the call; this was definitely Yan Kongshan.
“You’re finally dating? And it’s with a guy?” This was a million times more shocking than Yan Kongshan announcing that he was dating an older woman.
He always assumed that if the man ever started dating again, he would find an attractive, long-haired woman who was a bit older than him, but now… he’s gay?
This was a complete 180 from the Yan Kongshan that he knew. “I always thought even if I turned gay, you would never,” Ye Chen remarked.
Yan Kongshan started laughing. As he spoke, his voice turned gentle. “It’s not that I wasn’t firm, he was just too good.”
Ye Chen was incredibly curious what kind of person could bend Yan Kongshan. “Tell me about this impressive character,” he asked.
After pondering it for a few minutes, Yan Kongshan replied, “Clean, pretty, obedient, easy to talk to. When we’re alone, all I want to do is kiss him…”

Three years later, Yan Kongshan’s relationship with his lover was as steady and sweet as ever. Ye Chen went to the island every couple months to meet up with Yan Kongshan, and if he happened to go on a weekend, he’d drive Yan Kongshan’s little boyfriend back to his school.
Through this time, Ye Chen understood why Yan Kongshan would ask him whether he was “clingy” all those years ago when they had been drunk. As soon as he fell in love, the man was like a demon of passion, constantly wanting to hug and kiss. Ye Chen once asked him carefully why the passion was still so strong after three years of dating, but the other party simply turned his gaze towards the living room where the other two—one big, one small—were in the middle of a video game.
He didn’t seem to know the answer either. “People used to say this about me even before, as soon as I get into a relationship, I become clingy.”
Ye Chen smiled, guessing that the one who told him that was his former lover. “So this is just your nature?”

Ye Chen felt sorry for the boy. He shook his head internally and warned, “I’m gonna roll the window up if you don’t stop kissing him.”
At last, Yan Kongshan responded. He slowly removed the hands he had around the young man’s face, then released his swollen, red lips, then tilted his head and sent Ye Chen a glare.
“Single dogs have dog rights too, mister,” Ye Chen said with a fake smile.
Yan Kongshan retracted his gaze and turned back to his young boyfriend, taking in the boy’s large, dazed eyes and flushed face. He still hadn’t managed to slip his seatbelt on. Yan Kongshan’s eyes became exceedingly gentle.
He took the seatbelt out of the boy’s hands and buckled it for him, then said, “Safe journey.” With that, he took two steps back, his gaze fixed firmly on the young man.
Said young man lived up to his name—whether in personality or in his voice, he was soft and fluffy like a ball of cotton. Although he was already in his twenties, there was a pureness that emanated from him, giving people the impression that he was younger than he was.
“See you next week.” The young man’s voice was a bit hoarse, likely due to all the kissing.
It wasn’t as if Ye Chen was really going to stop them; he didn’t roll up the window until the car had long left the small road.
Music blasted from the radio in the car, interspersed with a few philosophical comments made by the female radio host. When they were well on their way, a message notification suddenly rang from the passenger seat.

Their relationship is technically good and it turn out well. But I just think that YM could deserve a better guy or at least just once, YKS could chase YM back. YKS just stand there being serve of a platter named YM and he has the nerve to reject it a lot of times. When some other people gonna eat it then he’s reluctantly gonna snatch it back. The food even has to coax him to eat it.
For me he’s just a lucky guy who received the blessing name Yu Mian without giving any effort. What’s so good about him anyway? It’s not like he’s that chaste and precious. 🤮
