Half a year has passed since the situation with Jin Xian’er and Young General Huo. Although I don’t know exactly how and in what manner those two have been entangled and Jin Xian’er naturally avoided talking to me about such matters, Zhao Gongzi was very happy to report on such matters to me. For example, today Jin Xian’er and Young General Huo had made up and were back to how they used to be, tomorrow Jin Xian’er and Young General Huo had a candlelit dinner. Then the next day, Young General Huo moved into Jin Xian’er’s apartment, and then after that, he followed after Jin Xian’er out of town for a performance, etc etc.
I don’t want to listen.
But I can’t say that.
If I let even a hint of my feelings of not wanting to listen slip out, then Zhao Gongzi would coldly laugh, then coldly say, “If you have the guts, then you can go to him.”
If I went with his suggestion and stood up to go out, then Zhao Gongzi would drag me back to the sofa while hollering at me, “Qiu Yixin, you bastard! If Laozi doesn’t end you today, then Laozi will change Laozi’s last name to yours!”
Don’t ask me why I’m so certain of what would happen, Qiu Long’s agreed to wash the sofa covers.
In the middle of the night, I coincidentally woke up and went to pour myself a glass of water in the living room. Just as I finished doing so, the telephone rang. At first, I thought it was for Zhao Gongzi, but when I picked up, it was actually a young, handsome colleague of mine who wanted to speak with me.
Fortunately, it was I who picked up, otherwise, I might have never received the call.
My colleague said, “Yixin, I just came back from out of town. I heard you’re really going to quit?”
In order to avoid waking Zhao Gongzi, who was still in the bedroom, and have him curse at me, I lowered my voice and said, “That’s right.”
I have a job as a Chinese teacher at an elementary school, but I truly can’t get along with the headmaster. The pay is low as well, and Zhao Gongzi uses up a lot of money. As such, I was planning on using the time freed up by quitting this job to do something else.
My colleague sighed. “Even though the salary is somewhat low, we all get along so well, for you to so suddenly——”
“It’s true that I’m somewhat tired, it’s probably very hard for me to keep going on. It’s already a type of burden for me.”
“Ah, I understand. Headmaster Qian’s personality is indeed difficult to interact with, he always forces us to go along with his pedantic mode of thinking. How about we use this opportunity to scare him a bit? Perhaps he’ll be willing to change?”
“He probably can’t change. Before you, there have been many other people and happenings, but he doesn’t care, and still does as he always has.”
My colleague sighed, then asked, “Then when do you plan on giving your letter of resignation?”
“I’ll wait until Zhao Long’s birthday passes.”
Going by Headmaster Qian’s personality and usual acts, I was afraid that my salary would be maliciously deducted by him. And since Zhao Gongzi’s birthday was coming up, I was afraid that Zhao Gongzi would take it as me having purposefully, maliciously chosen to give him an unsatisfactory present.
My colleague sighed again, and said, “I’m afraid that Headmaster Qian won’t agree to you resigning.”
“He can’t do anything even if he doesn’t agree, it’s not like he can really do anything to me. If he truly was going to do something to me, then I can do nothing but let him.”
“Sigh, we’re all unwilling to see you go. Honestly, we’ve all gotten used to Headmaster Qian’s ways, he can say what he wants and do what he wants, and we’ll still do what we have to do. What’s the point in making a fuss with him?”
I was unwilling to leave them as well, and so couldn’t resist sighing. “It’s just that I’m too tired, I’m truly too tired.”
“It’s because you took on so many jobs! Are you badly in need of money?”
Of course I needed money. Take a look at how much money Zhao Gongzi uses up!

Even though I know the manager.
Originally, I should not have known that manager.
If I didn’t know that manager, then I could have told Zhao Gongzi that we didn’t have that much money. Then, that manager wouldn’t have said to us, “No problem. If it’s you two, then you can pay in installments.” And finally Zhao Gongzi wouldn’t have found an excuse to be able to say, “Oh, then we’ll buy it.”
Oh, then we’ll buy it.
Oh!
Then we’ll buy it!
With what money?!
I thought about this sum of debt that had been added to our monthly costs and couldn’t help but sigh once more. “It’s not that I need money, it’s just that Zhao Long spends too much money.”
My colleague laughed. “Who can do anything about that? He’s Zhao Gongzi, after all.”
I sighed. “Right, who can do anything about that? He’s Zhao Gongzi, after all.”
After growing up under Master Zhao Si’s wings, and being able to spend money like using water, now that Zhao Gongzi has changed hands and is with me, it’s not like I can let him be unable to buy anything. Wouldn’t that make Uncle Da Li mutter about me even more than he does?
My colleague switched the conversation back to Headmaster Qian. “Headmaster Qian, well he is the type–sigh. Saying all this is making me want to submit my resignation letter too. Headmaster Qian truly is too unreasonable, and is always petty and stingy. No wonder even someone like you, with such a good temper, has been driven away by him. You’re even the one who’s taught here the longest.”
Although the reason was like this, we still have to be somewhat more respectful when speaking. And so I said, in a more subtle manner, “Well, it’s not actually so serious as him being unreasonable and petty as you say. It’s just that our personalities don’t match.”
“How about this, on another day let’s all go and discuss it, and establish a school ourselves? It seems hard, but we all have some connections, and you have Master Zhao Si backing you. It won’t be too hard.”
“This has nothing to do with Master Zhao Si.”
“I’m just saying this offhandedly, I don’t dare actually try and use Master Zhao Si for connections.”
I continued chatting with him for a few more minutes, then hung up. After that, I drank some water and went back to sleep.
Let’s put the matter of resigning to the side for a bit. I found that in the following days, Zhao Gongzi was acting and speaking weirdly, though I don’t know why.
It’s absolutely not just me overthinking things.
Zhao Gongzi suddenly gave me a high-value cheque. Well, he often brings money back home, but this year, he’s bringing less, and uses ‘Laozi fought with my dad because of you’ as an excuse to eat my food and depend on me, financially, without a lick of unease. However, he does occasionally bring back some money to thicken our coffers.
However, before when he gave me money, he wouldn’t just give me money, he couldn’t help but also say some rubbish. For example, ‘if you take from Laozi then you have to be soft-handed, if you eat Laozi’s food then you have to be short-mouthed’, and also like, ‘Laozi’s warning you not to take Laozi’s money and make eyes at other men. Otherwise, Laozi is going to break your leg’. Even in times when he was in a great mood, he would make use of the situation and taunt me.
But now he only lightly said, “If it’s not enough then tell me.”
I couldn’t help but stare at him.
Zhao Gongzi lightly said, “Don’t worry, I have ways of earning money.”
If so, then why didn’t you say so earlier?
I naturally wasn’t going to say this kind of thing out loud, so I just nodded and said, “Then I’ll use this money to pay off the amount we owe for the piano.”
If it was the normal Zhao Gongzi, then he would have raved, rambled, and hollered at me with nonsensical logic, “You’re just taking advantage of the chance to go see your old classmate again! Do you think Laozi doesn’t know? Laozi saw you two making eyes at each other back then! Isn’t paying in installments making it easy for you to see him each month?! You’re not allowed to go see him!”
But right now Zhao Gongzi only lightly said, “Tell me when you don’t have enough. If you want to buy something then buy it, I have money.”
Me:“……”
I thought and thought again, then said, “The matter of reselling military arms, you shouldn’t agree with the Old Master and General Huo. Other dealings too, don’t touch them.”
If it was the normal Zhao Gongzi, then he would have shouted, “What the hell does Laozi’s stuff have to do with you?! Does Laozi need you to manage them?! You shut up!”
And yet, right now, Zhao Gongzi simply lightly said, “I know. You said it before, I remember.”
I had no choice but to show my concern. “Did something happen? Do you feel unwell?”
Zhao Gongzi doesn’t get sick often, but every time that he does fall ill, it’s like a mountain collapsing. What’s more, the one to take care of him is always me, the one who will get tired is also me, and so taking precautions against him falling ill is the best course of action.
If it was the normal Zhao Gongzi, then he would have hollered, “You just wish Laozi would die of sickness, don’t you?! If Laozi dies of illness then you can go off and elope with a/b/c or d, (decided by who he dislikes the most at the time) right?!”
And yet, right now Zhao Gongzi only lightly said, “I’m fine.”
I suspect Zhao Gongzi was feeling guilty.
If he was feeling guilty, then he must have done something wrong.
If he was feeling guilty towards me then he must have done something wrong to me.
For example, he once again secretly borrowed out my important books to someone who does not have a love and appreciation of books, or had carelessly put oil pancakes or meat buns or some other food onto my books, or——
I couldn’t help but use a probing gaze filled with scrutiny to stare at Zhao Gongzi.
If it was the normal Zhao Gongzi, then he would have hollered at me, “Laozi hates that look you give me the most! What are you looking at?! If you keep looking then Laozi will kill you!”
And yet, right now Zhao Gongzi only lightly asked, “What is it?”
I said, “Nothing.”
If it was the normal Zhao Gongzi, then he would have hollered, “If you have something to say then say it! Laozi hates it the most when you have something to say, but stay silent about it!” (Once, I’d shot back and asked him that if he hated this and that thing about me, then why did he continue living here with me in my apartment and continue spending his days with me? Then we fought for an hour, then I stayed in bed for an entire day.)
And yet, right now Zhao Gongzi simply lightly said, “If there’s nothing pressing, then let’s rest early.”
I’m not going to rest with him, he’s guilty of something. He might have done something even more serious than destroying my precious book collection.
If it was the usual Zhao Gongzi, then he would holler at me——no, actually, when it came to ‘resting’ he generally doesn’t holler at me too much, and instead goes straight to taking action.
However, the current Zhao Gongzi, upon hearing that I refused to rest with him, just quietly turned around and went to sleep. The sole pillow that he and I possessed, he didn’t use and left to me.
If it was the normal Zhao Gongzi, he would maliciously snatch away the pillow, then wait for me to beg him for it.
Yet he’s behaving completely out of the ordinary.
Whenever things are out of the ordinary, there will definitely be something wrong.
Zhao Long got drunk and cheated on me.
I concluded.
Zhao Gongzi’s strange behaviour lasted many days. No matter how I tested him, he was always reserved and mild. Even when I purposefully said that I wanted to sleep separately, he went to sleep on the sofa without a word. He even started a temporary stay on the sofa.
I believe that if he didn’t cheat on me, then he’s found a new method to torment me.
But recently I haven’t done anything to anger him, so he doesn’t have any reason to torment me on purpose.
As I thought, he must have cheated on me
Zhao Gongzi’s journal:
Qiu Yixin wants to run away.
Rinrin: Poor heartbroken little fool
these two kill me qwq
thanks for the chapter <3
Went back and read just the dialogue that Zhao Gongzi would have been able to hear – poor thing, I totally see how he misunderstood. This is going to be a headache once it’s cleared up though 😂
Same. If I was listening I would have thought the same. It is funny and sad at the same time
Me too lololol, this is sad and funny at the same time 😂
I wanna smack the f out of them🙂
I really want to read the story from Zhao Long’s POV!!!!!!
These two are never in the same chapter..sigh. I can’t help but laugh.
