Hira Kazunari, the protagonist of this novel, is a high school student who is a taciturn guy and belongs to the bottom of the pyramid in his class. He doesn’t have any friends, but he falls in love at first sight with a popular boy named Kiyoi Sou, who belongs at the top of the pyramid. Despite Kiyoi’s coldness and haughtiness, Hira always treats him like a “King” while thinking himself as “the King’s trash.”
