Boom. Boom. Boom.
A deafening roar echoed relentlessly through the space.
Shadows would appear and then disappear in an instant, followed by a loud explosion as the two people clashed repeatedly. With each loud boom, another part of the building collapsed.
Yisun watched in shock, dumbfounded. He shuddered at the heat swirling around the building, then felt a strange chill as he watched the shadows beneath it rise up and dominate the flames.
The confrontation had been going on for almost half an hour. It started when Sa Hyeon suddenly appeared in the hotel and Cheon Hyeongwon was unable to keep a lid on his frustration, which was boiling over. He cursed him for his cocky attitude, but Sa Hyeon seemed relaxed, as if he’d anticipated the situation. With a flick, he raised a shadow in the hallway to block the fire and smirked.
“If we’re going to fight, let’s do it properly. Ah, maybe it’ll only be fair if my side has a disadvantage after all…?”
Sa Hyeon glanced at Yisun, and Cheon Hyeongwon narrowed his eyes. “Let’s do it properly,” he said, easily falling for the taunt.
And so, all but the two of them left the collapsing building. Flames raced up, threatening to consume the entire building, and the shadows of the building quickly worked to keep them at bay.
By this time, the Hunters of the Paradise Guild had also seen Yisun, exchanging glances amongst themselves. They seemed to be discussing whether or not they should take Yisun and run away in the midst of a situation that seemed to be going awry, when they were interrupted by a voice: “Get the hell out of here.”
It was Han Arin, who had been staying with Na Gunwoo near the hospital and had come over as soon as she saw social media buzzing about the disturbance on the outskirts of Seoul. People’s words traveled faster than news. While in a taxi, Han Arin received a call from the Hunters’ Association, asking her to check on the situation.
While many Hunters used fire, only very few had shadow abilities. Moreover, the overwhelming size of the shadow made it clear that it was Sa Hyeon at the scene. The Hunters’ Association could only ask her to help them figure out what was going on and deal with it. And while Han Arin agreed, she didn’t really want to. It wasn’t like she could stop a fight between two S-class Hunters in the first place, but she didn’t want to miss the spectacle either.
“Restorer Yisun, are you okay?”
“Oh, yes… But over there…”
“It’s okay, it’s okay… Now, we just need to watch.”
Han Arin smiled at the resigned Yisun and checked her surroundings. There were nearly a dozen Paradise Guild Hunters around, but there was no way they were going to try anything now that she was here. She could see people taking pictures of the situation from a building in the distance, but for now, Han Arin was satisfied that there was no one around.
If anything went wrong in a fight between S-class Hunters, it could cause a disaster on the level of an S-class dungeon break aftermath. In fact, there had been cases in other countries where fights between S-class Hunters had razed entire cities. Of course, she wasn’t worried about Sa Hyeon causing havoc as much as she was about Cheon Hyeongwon doing so.
At that moment, a taxi pulled over next to them, and Ki Joohyuk came running towards Han Arin and Yisun, his magic rod in his hands.
“What are you holding that for?”
“I came straight here from training, and before he disappeared, the leader told me to bring it.”
Ki Joohyuk had been undergoing intense training under Sa Hyeon when he had heard about Yisun. He was on death’s doorstep, agonizing, when news of the kidnapping dragged him out of his half-dead state. Typically, he would’ve panicked and started making a fuss, asking what to do, but a single glance at Sa Hyeon’s calm smiling face had him decide to keep his mouth shut instead.
Since Sa Hyeon’s Marking was limited to the target’s shadow, he couldn’t teleport if they were inside a different shade. He could only wait for Yisun’s shadow to appear, and then he’d made his move. He had told Ki Joohyuk to bring the rod as soon as his position was known, which caused Han Arin to exclaim at this.
“Wow, he really thought it through….”
Calling up Ki Joohyuk, a water element user, while confronting Cheon Hyeongwon, a fire Mage, seemed to be nothing more than preparation on Sa Hyeon’s side; he was here to clean up if the fire were to spread too far.
In the meantime, the large hotel continued to crumble. As the two men exchanged blows, the building that was well over 20 stories tall burned and collapsed in an instant. Cheon Hyeongwon also had a rod that he’d brought just in case in his hand. Magic poured out of him in a steady stream.
Yisun watched with parted lips. Cheon Hyeongwon was showing that he was indeed an S-class Hunter. Despite the endless flames devouring the huge building, he showed no signs of fatigue.
The sight of crimson and pitch-black clashing was almost frightening, so Yisun turned to Han Arin. They were watching the fight near the fence at the entrance to the hotel, and he wondered if it was okay for them to go on like this.
“Shouldn’t we stop it…?”
“How do you stop that?”
“Yeah, that’s not a fight you can stop. When A-class Hunters fight, an S-rank Hunter can intervene, but when S-class Hunters fight, no one can stop it. We can only wait until it’s settled,” Ki Joohyuk added with a hint of excitement.
Han Arin watched the fight with interest, but spoke in a rather incredulous tone, “No matter how much you felt threatened by Chord, how can you kidnap someone?”
“I think he just coveted Restorer Yisun.”
“And to think he’s supposed to be the next Guild Leader of Paradise.”
At those words, Ki Joohyuk chuckled and added, “Seems like he’ll be getting a one-way ticket to ‘paradise’ soon enough.”
Despite the seriousness of the situation, the relaxed banter between the two left Yisun’s face tinged with puzzlement.

Deeming it better to show than to tell, she gestured toward the building, which had totally collapsed. The structures were burned down to their bare skeletons, and through the crumbling rubble they could see Cheon Hyeongwon and Sa Hyeon. The flames from the tip of Cheon Hyeongwon’s rod shot out like dragons, slicing through the air and aiming at Sa Hyeon. The latter dodged, moving quickly through the shadows, but the flames’ pursuit was relentless.
Yisun was once again amazed at how intense it was. He had always admired Ki Joohyuk’s fire magic, but the difference between A-class and S-class was made obvious.
Eventually, the two of them stood on the rubble of the skeletal structure. Cheon Hyeongwon was panting, not from insufficient Mana, but from physical exertion. Meanwhile, Sa Hyeon stood leisurely, a lazy smile on his face as he tossed the dagger up into the air once, then again.
“Are you done already?”
“Bring it on, you bastard!”
Cheon Hyeongwon roared loudly as he brandished his rod. The platinum-plated white rod extended, blue flames erupting from its tip in a more intense onslaught. Sa Hyeon swerved deftly to the side and narrowly avoided it. As a larger flame surged towards him, he swiftly moved into the shadow of Cheon Hyeongwon. Sa Hyeon then emerged from behind him and half-ducked, scraping the ground with a motion that sent a cloud of dirt billowing into the air. Cheon Hyeongwon, who had just turned around, was suddenly hit by the dirt and let out a yelp.
“How childish…!”
“I’m glad you understand the concept of childishness. Based on your thoughtless behavior so far, I almost thought you didn’t,” Sa Hyeon said with a smile.
Cheon Hyeongwon’s face flushed red from embarrassment at the mockery, and the aura around him rose dangerously high. He then slammed the rod into the ground, causing a tremendous heat to spread through the entire area.
With a great rumble, flames erupted from the ground and surged across the entire area in a pillar of fire that was much larger than the hotel building.
Yisun sucked in a short breath as he felt the Mana in the area fluctuate. The flames were so large that they threatened to spill over the fence. Han Arin clicked her tongue, covered her face with one arm, and pulled Yisun behind her using the other. Suddenly, Sa Hyeon appeared from behind Ki Joohyuk.
“Hunter Ki Joohyuk. Did I call you here to watch? Get working.”
Ki Joohyuk gasped in surprise at the cold voice, but before he could reply, Sa Hyeon had already disappeared again. Yisun blinked, unable to comprehend the sudden turn of events, but then, Ki Joohyuk let out a sigh and stepped forward, raising the rod, and soon Yisun saw an incredible sight.
The flames in front of them gradually spread to the sides, as if re-enacting the parting of the Red Sea, while the intensity of the flames in their vicinity decreased. It was as though the flames were being pushed back and compressed. This was not a new elemental magic that Ki Joohyuk had used, but rather, he had simply dispersed the flames created by Cheon Hyeongwon.
Yisun remembered that a few days ago, Ki Joohyuk had said that he was learning to dispel attacks from Sa Hyeon. Their team leader had said that there was a high probability that the boss monster in the fifth dungeon would use fire magic, so Ki Joohyuk should be prepared.
After she realized the situation, Han Arin was quite impressed. Mages with the same attribute would sometimes counter their opponent’s attack, but it was extremely tricky, especially with the difference in rank. Han Arin was genuinely in awe that Sa Hyeon had brought Ki Joohyuk with such an intention. Yisun was also impressed, forgetting for a moment that they were fighting an S-class Hunter.
Meanwhile, a maniacal laugh could be heard from within the flames. Cheon Hyeongwon had created an enormous pillar of fire and moved it to traace Sa Hyeon’s path. The flames stubbornly moved in front of him, as if trying to block his vision and prevent him from moving into the shadows. The flames widened and narrowed like a curtain, almost as if it were aattempt to confuse him.
Sa Hyeon calmly peered beyond the flames as he moved quickly, and before he knew it, Cheon Hyeongwon had slammed the pillar of fire down. The attack was so devastating that the Hunters of the Paradise Guild near the fence were swept away. Thankfully, Yisun and Han Arin were unharmed, with Ki Joohyuk blocking the attack in front of them.
Soon, instead of soaring upward, the flames spread horizontally around Cheon Hyeongwon. Within a radius of 3 meters, flames flickered at knee height, yet Cheon Hyeongwon remained unscathed within the fire, laughing heartily.
“Now, let’s see how you can get here if I do this, huh?!” Cheon Hyeongwon mocked as he looked at Sa Hyeon standing far in the distance. Cheon Hyeongwon was a long-distance damage dealer, and although Sa Hyeon could also use long-range attacks, he was primarily a close-range damage dealer. The building had already collapsed, so there were no shadows, and with the flames surrounding himself, Sa Hyeon had no way of getting close. Cheon Hyeongwon’s expression immediately twisted at the casually aimed taunt. Just as he extended the rod out again to strike at Sa Hyeon, a massive shadow suddenly arose from behind the rubble. It was as if the remnants on the ground were being lifted into the air by the emerging shadow, making it seem as though the very earth was rising up.
The debris flew straight at Cheon Hyeongwon, who had yet to close his jaw. He quickly summoned a flame to stop it, but there was as much rubble as the building was large. Dozens, if not hundreds, of debris were thrown at him.
Just as it was becoming too much for him to block, a huge chunk of the wall floated out of thin air and loomed over him.
“Ugh…”
Shadows completely engulfed him, and at the same time, a pitch-black hand extending from the wall swung down and snuffed out the flames surrounding him. The next thing he knew, the wall fell with a thud, and he rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding it. He planted his hands on the floor and gasped.
Sa Hyeon appeared behind him, muttering lowly,“I’m surprised you don’t seem to know how I use my abilities. Don’t you watch other Guilds’ strategy videos? Is it because you’re too confident in your own abilities?”
Before Cheon Hyeongwon could turn around and mumble a reply, Sa Hyeon grabbed him by the collar at the back of his neck and flung him away. Barely managing to grab the rod, Cheon Hyeongwon went flying, rolling once across the floor before finally getting to his feet. Flames swirled around him again.
“What? Do you think that just because I’m a Mage, I can’t do close-range combat?!”
But before he could finish casting his spell, Sa Hyeon had moved in front of him. Cheon Hyeongwon hadn’t even realized that he’d landed in the shadows of the rubble.
“Yeah, I do,” Sa Hyeon replied monotonously, slashing at Cheon Hyeongwon’s waist. The latter screamed and swung the rod, but it didn’t land. Sa Hyeon ducked to avoid it, following which Cheon Hyeongwon stretched out his foot at a fairly quick pace to kick him. But not only was Sa Hyeon more agile, he also had the advantage of moving through the shadows. He appeared from behind and kicked the leg as it stretched out.
Losing his balance, Cheon Hyeongwon staggered forward with a cry. Sa Hyeon slammed an elbow onto his unsteady back and sent him tumbling to the floor in a defeated heap.
“U, urgh…”
He had enough awareness as a Mage and didn’t let go of his rod, so Sa Hyeon lightly stomped on his wrist. Cheon Hyeongwon screamed in agony, releasing his grip, and Sa Hyeon kicked it away. The sound of the rod rolling across the floor echoed eerily through the silent space.
Such a flamboyant and seemingly devastating attack ended up being quite futile. Han Arin chuckled softly at Yisun’s baffled face.

“You crazy bastard!” Han Arin shouted urgently, slamming one foot down on the ground. At the same time, the earth around the area rumbled and instantly rose up like a wall, completely encircling the hotel.
It was a hasty use of her earthquake ability, but her judgment was wise. With a roar, the fireball slammed into the wall and fell downward. The amount of Mana released by Cheon Hyeongwon was so great that if Han Arin hadn’t raised the ground to contain it, it would have engulfed a hundred meters around it in flames, affecting even the civilians watching from afar.
As Han Arin gasped for air, Cheon Hyeongwon staggered out of the fire. Yisun was genuinely surprised that he could use such a wide area attack without a rod. Sa Hyeon had raised a shadow in front of him to block the attack, but the edges of his coat were still scorched.

With a short gasp, Yisun was swept away. He froze in his tracks, panicked by the crimson flames rushing in front of him, but in that moment, Cheon Hyeongwon appeared from the flames and grabbed his arm. If he couldn’t get the Restorer, then he would rather incapacitate him than leave him in Sa Hyeon’s hands.
Just as his vision was about to be engulfed in flames, a sudden chill swept through the air, and darkness rushed forward. From his vantage point on the earth Han Arin had raised, Sa Hyeon quickly lunged at Cheon Hyeongwon, who had been hiding within the blazing flames and only just emerged to grab Yisun. Once his position was revealed, Sa Hyeon wasted no time as he grabbed the side of his face, slamming him to the ground.
With a thud, the ground shook as a thundering roar spread. Cheon Hyeongwon’s crimson body flared like a blazing fire under Sa Hyeon’s hand, shuddering.
“Uaagh!”
Having fallen to the ground, Cheon Hyeongwon tried to attack again, but his spell-casting was cut off every single time. A one-meter radius around him became a realm of shadows, and the flames couldn’t approach. When it came to Mana purity, Cheon Hyeongwon was clearly losing.
Darkness surged around Sa Hyeon, rising to great heights before forcefully descending upon the ground. Concentrating every ounce of his power, the shadows surged endlessly upwards before cascading down, akin to an inverted tidal wave—it was a deliberate act aimed at extinguishing the raging flames in the vicinity.
Blood trickled from Cheon Hyeongwon’s head and straight onto the floor. Sa Hyeon lifted him up by the hair, his gaze detached, only to pause momentarily when he looked up and let out a soft exhale. Yisun was watching him.
With trembling eyes, he was looking at Sa Hyeon, rather than Cheon Hyeongwon on the ground, and Sa Hyeon was momentarily puzzled by the gaze, but soon spoke in a calm voice, “Hunter Ki Joohyuk. Take Yisun-ssi and leave.”
Ki Joohyuk hesitated a little bit in confusion, but eventually took Yisun outside the stone dome.
Sa Hyeon only grabbed Cheon Hyeongwon’s head again once he made sure they were completely out of sight. Cheon Hyeongwon tried to cast a spell in retaliation, but the flames were soon snuffed out by the shadows. Sa Hyeon laughed softly as he watched his fruitless struggle, then slammed his head into the floor.
Bam, Bam. Blood gushed out along with the sound of a skull cracking.
“Just. Because. You’re an S-class.” An eerie crashing sound echoed through the space with every pause as Sa Hyeon spoke, “Doesn’t mean. Your intelligence. Is high. As well. You see?”
When he finished, he released his grip. The head on the floor was already drowning in its own blood, and other than the occasional twitch, his opponent could barely even look up. Despite the situation, Sa Hyeon’s expression remained incredibly calm, but there was a disturbing glint in his eyes, which had grown even chillier than usual.
He kindly locked eyes with Cheon Hyeongwon, who looked up from the floor, trembling.
“I was going to cut you some slack and let you go since you’re so pathetic, but you just had to act so low up until the very end.”
“Hmph, ugh… urk.”
“If you realize the consequences of messing with the wrong person, don’t pull these kinds of stunts with me again. Can’t you learn from your own mistakes?”
Cheon Hyeongwon, trembling violently, felt like he was on the verge of death. Beyond the metaphorical expression of fearing death, the blood flowing from his head indicated a stark reality. Sa Hyeon calmly scanned him, as if confirming his condition, before retrieving a small potion from his pouch.
He slowly poured it over Cheon Hyeongwon’s head. It was a healing potion, spreading a faint glow across his face. Thanks to the top-grade potion, Cheon Hyeongwon’s injuries healed in no time.
And then, Sa Hyeon grabbed Cheon Hyeongwon’s head again and slammed it to the ground.
“You see, killing is pretty inefficient.”
With a thud, a terrifying sound reverberated through the space once again. Despite the reopened wounds oozing blood afresh, staining the floor a deep crimson, Sa Hyeon’s gestures didn’t cease until the ground was completely dyed red. Han Arin, from the moment Sa Hyeon retrieved the potion from his pouch, seemed to have anticipated it, slightly furrowing her brows, but otherwise remained silent, only observing quietly.
Cheon Hyeongwon’s arm shakily reached for Sa Hyeon’s, only to collapse to the floor once more.
“Urgh…!”
“I’d be feeling like shit, while the other person is dead and relieved of any feeling. It’s too simple an end, isn’t it?”
The healing potion was poured over Cheon Hyeongwon’s head once again just as he sucked in a dying breath. Sa Hyeon waited for him to recover, then grabbed his head again and slammed it to the ground. There was no emotion in his jet-black eyes as he repeated the act.
“I’d much rather plant a fearful memory in their mind, so that they’ll have to spend the rest of their life trembling, hiding, and watching over their shoulders.”
“Urghh… s, that, sto…”
“They say the strongest instinct is survival instinct, so you can never forget the moment where your life is threatened, right? Or at least that’s how it was with the people I’ve seen so far. You’re pretty stupid, but I’m sure even you’ll remember that.”
Sa Hyeon’s words about humans being weak in the face of overwhelming fear fell flatly as he poured the potion over Cheon Hyeongwon’s head one last time and stood up.
Plop. plop. plop. The falling raindrops permeated the silent space. The anticipated evening rain had arrived prematurely. Sa Hyeon frowned as he watched the dwindling embers on the floor go out one by one.

A moment ago, when he had slammed Cheon Hyeongwon into the ground, debris from the cracked floor flew and slightly grazed his cheek. It was a cut as thin as a hair strand, intermittently trickling blood, and Sa Hyeon hadn’t even noticed it.
He blinked slowly and looked down at Yisun, wondering if he was still shaking from the battle earlier, but the worry in his light brown eyes told him otherwise.
