  3. This is just a guess but historically salt has in many ages and all around the world been a very valuable commodity. In a conflict area, like the war zone in this novel, salt might not have been ever harder to get and more expensive.

    So salt — or not eating it — became a status symbol among martial artists from what I understood. That’s why it’s shameful to eat it — it’s proof you didn’t defend the country and aren’t from any of the big sects.
