Legend of Yu LanCh16 - long time no see

The weight of the stone slab against his back would be enough to crush a mortal man, but Fan Yi could still move at that moment. Although his ears buzzed, he had long noticed the person below him had stopped breathing. The sounds of screams had vanished and the sound of crying had quieted as well. The only thing left was the dancing of raindrops across the ruins of the once glorious sect. He could feel the splatter of rain dripping through a crevice from above onto his neck. His vision was beginning to fade, but his eyes remained concentrated on the petite girl under him.

“…Jingyi,” Fan Yi whispered the name softly. His voice had become hoarse from inhaling smoke and hours of not speaking. “Jingyi, wake up. Look at me.” pHOFzZ

The petite girl’s normally flushed face had become as pale as paper. The usual liveliness no longer existed. The only indication of life was a splash of blood from the corner of her lips. Fan Yi shifted. The surrounding structure groaned. He glanced over his shoulder and slowly reached back, pushing the slab off of him. His reaction time was slower than usual, but he managed to move away while dragging the girl with him. He hugged the body close to his chest as he stared blankly across the remnants of the room. His eyes caught glimpses of hands. Most of the wood had become charred from the fire, only now still because of the rain.

Fan Yi coughed out a laugh. Soon, he felt as if his chest had been torn open as the laughter came wave after wave. He gagged in pain, but the laughter was the only thing keeping him breathing at this moment. His fingers dug into the arm of the body below him. He lowered his head, pressing his forehead against the body as sobs raked through his body.

“Jingyi…my sweet sister…Jingyi,” Fan Yi’s grip tightened further when a groan suddenly emerged from the body below.

Fan Yi’s eyes widened. His head shot up. UW45Vg

A new face looked up at him. The person appeared just as sickly, but the wounds scattered throughout his body appeared more horrendous in comparison. Fan Yi felt his breathing stutter. Before he could form the name in his mouth, he jolted awake, cold sweat coating his back and his forehead.

The candle flames flickered from the soft wind, blowing in from the terrace.

Fan Yi gripped the covers tightly in an attempt to stop the faint trembling of his hands. He pushed the blankets off and slipped into his shoes. He stood and stopped beside the daybed where Wu Lingtian slept. He knelt down and checked Wu Lingtian’s pulse.

Beating and strong.

He slowly exhaled through his mouth and fell back onto his bottom. He sat cross-legged as he stared at Wu Lingtian’s sleeping visage, reminding him of just a few weeks ago when the man had been near death, refusing to wake up.

“Lingtian,” Fan Yi whispered his name softly.

Wu Lingtian’s lashes trembled slightly. Fan Yi reached out and carefully smoothed back his hair. “Xiao Wu…it was my fault. But I’m here now…even if Sect Master Zhong is against you, I’ll stand by your side.”

Wu Lingtian didn’t shirk from Fan Yi’s cold hand, but instead, nuzzled closer. His lips parted in an inaudible murmur. His obedient appearance made Fan Yi slowly smile. He was reluctant to move, but he soon stood. He carefully tucked Wu Lingtian in before pulling on his outer robes. He stepped out into the hall and walked down a flight of stairs. His steps paused when he saw a flicker of a shadow by the terrace. Fan Yi slowly approached it. The figure leaning against the railing turned and smiled. xkZrnv

“This disciple has seen Shizun,” Su Han clasped his hand together and whispered out a greeting.

“Can’t sleep?” Fan Yi joined Su Han by the railing.

Su Han hummed. He turned back to face the night sky. Fan Yi soon heard his eldest disciple sigh. “Shizun, should I continue on with the conference?”

Fan Yi quirked an eyebrow. “You said you would this year.” g2ut0R

“I did,” Su Han looked out across the silent street. “But I’m having second thoughts.”

“If it’s because of that Bái Qiū (白秋) brat, then forget it,” Fan Yi waved his hand.

Su Han glanced at Fan Yi. He smiled the same smile Wu Lingtian hated to see on Fan Yi’s face. “Shizun, what would you do if you were in my place?”

“Confront him,” Fan Yi nodded firmly. He looked at Su Han. “You’ve avoided him for ten years. Didn’t you just do it because you weren’t sure how to face him?” vOthw5

Su Han hummed softly.

“Admittedly, what he did wasn’t wrong,” Fan Yi said. “Lǚ Bǎn (呂版) was trying to start a war. Him stepping in was remarkable. The only issue was he didn’t tell us.”

Chrysanthemum Garden.

“Right.”

“Just ask yourself why were you angry with him,” Fan Yi said. “Was it because he left our sect? Or was it because he lied to us? Were you angry? Or were you just hurt?” ObmyhV

Su Han pinched at the pads of his fingertips, remaining silent. “…Human emotions are hard.”

“Indeed,” Fan Yi hummed. He glanced at Su Han again before turning towards the night sky. “All I know is Bai Qiu did what he did because he didn’t want to worry us as he died. It’s lucky enough that he managed to recover his life. There aren’t many people who get a second chance like this. If anything else were to happen in the future before the two of you could speak again, then…well, I don’t think you’d want to live with that kind of regret.”

He watched his disciple’s gloomy appearance fade the slightest. Fan Yi threw an arm over Su Han’s shoulders and patted him on the chest. “You can avoid him for a short time, but you can’t avoid him for life. I’m sure at some point, Bai Qiu will be looking for you at any rate. And when he does, Xiewen and I will not stop him from entering the sect.”

Su Han looked at Fan Yi with a slight frown. I Wr78

“Hey,” Fan Yi grinned. “You know our policy—once a member of Screeching Sparrow Sect, always a member of Screeching Sparrow Sect.”

“Except traitors.”

“Except traitors,” Fan Yi nodded.

“…So, I should just confront him?” m WEjU

“Realistically, how many words will you be able to exchange?” Fan Yi asked. “He’s going to be sitting with Black Scale Palace, and we’re going to be on the opposite side of the arena. The demonic sects and the unorthodox sects don’t even sit together for this conference.”

“…True.”

“Just come,” Fan Yi said. “If anything happens, Xiewen will step in and teach him a lesson Bai Qiu up.”

Su Han smiled sheepishly. “I don’t think that would be necessary.” YO1NiU

Su Han let out a slow sigh and then looked to Fan Yi. “But, Shizun, why are you awake?”

Fan Yi’s smile flickered. He averted his gaze and leaned against the railing. “I’m anxious.”

“Anxious?” Su Han straightened. “About what?”

“I was just thinking about some things that could go wrong during the conference,” Fan Yi sighed. “I worked myself up and now I can’t sleep. You know how it goes.” gDdzo6

Su Han nodded. That was what he had done as well. He smiled reassuringly. “Don’t worry, Shizun. I’m sure nothing will go wrong. If you are worried because of Lord Immortal, no one can touch him unless they want to face Frost Cliff Pavilion.”

“That’s true,” Fan Yi smiled back, though he quickly looked away. “We should both get back to sleep. I have to report to Sect Master Zhong tomorrow.”

When morning came, the first thing Wu Lingtian saw was Fan Yi swinging down from the roof. The man froze where he was before giving Wu Lingtian a bright smile.

“Did you sleep well?”

“Mn,” Wu Lingtian stretched out his neck. “You…”

“I like watching the sunrise,” Fan Yi smiled. He yawned slightly. “I’m going back to sleep for a little. Would you mind waking me up in an hour?” gu4Teh

Wu Lingtian hummed and watched Fan Yi trail his way back into the room. Although his face was obscured by the shadows, Wu Lingtian could see the tiredness in his eyes. He shuffled after Fan Yi and hesitated beside the screen.

Fan Yi looked up and smiled. “What’s wrong?”

Wu Lingtian seemed to freeze. He stood there for a moment before he stiffly turned around and walked away. Fan Yi watched him curiously, but he soon came back, holding his fist out to Fan Yi.

Fan Yi stared at the fist and then looked back up at Wu Lingtian. He wrapped his hand the fist. Wu Lingtian’s eyes widened incredulously. L7Hny9

“Why are you holding my hand?”

“…What else was I supposed to do?” Fan Yi asked dazedly.

“Release me.”

Fan Yi released Wu Lingtian’s fist and waited patiently. Wu Lingtian took Fan Yi by the wrist and turned his hand palm up. He placed a piece of candy into Fan Yi’s hand and stepped back. Wu Lingtian met Fan Yi’s smiling eyes before quickly averting his gaze. He cleared his throat as his ears progressively grew redder. RdgGD8

“For you to eat.”

“Mn,” Fan Yi held the candy to his chest. “Thank you.”

“Oh,” Wu Lingtian held his hand behind his back. His fingernails dug into his palm. “I am going to eat breakfast.”

“Okay.” 1GCwhV

“I will be back in an hour to wake you.”

“Mn.”

Wu Lingtian nodded to himself and grabbed a change of clothes.

“Lingtian.” k4jC1E

“Ah?” Wu Lingtian’s hand froze against the door. He turned to look at Fan Yi and resisted the urge to look away again.

Although there were slight dark circles under Fan Yi’s eyes, a brilliance shined within them that Wu Lingtian was not used to seeing. He felt himself shrink slightly under Fan Yi’s warm gaze. However, to Fan Yi, Wu Lingtian remained straight and unmoving. The only giveaway that he was feeling flustered was the tinge of pink on his earlobes.

“Thank you.”

Wu Lingtian nodded. He didn’t bother pointing out that Fan Yi had already thanked him. In fact, he had barely been able to hear what Fan Yi just said. He kept his expression indifferent as he exited the room, but his mind was still filled with Fan Yi’s gentle voice and his warm smile. His feet carried him until the top of the stairs. His fingers tightly gripped into his clothes and he took a deep breath. aJU0Di

Why did he just walk out of the room when he was still in his sleeping wear?

He looked down at the clothes in his hands and continued down the stairs. He stopped at one of the disciples’ rooms that seemed to have a bit of activity and knocked lightly. The door was opened by a Liang Jun sporting a bedhead. His eyes widened and he quickly closed the door in Wu Lingtian’s face.

Wu Lingtian’s mouth hung open and slowly shut. He listened to Liang Jun’s painful groan, followed by a muffled questioning. The door soon opened again, revealing a much neater and more awake Su Han.

“Lord Immortal, did you need something?” Su Han asked. rpHTXl

“Sect Leader is still asleep. I did not want to disturb him. May I borrow your room?” Wu Lingtian lifted up his clothes.

Su Han acquiesced and stepped to the side to allow Wu Lingtian to get into the room.

“Lord Immortal, you are awake early,” Liang Jun flashed a smile. His hair had been tamed and sat in a neat ponytail behind him.

“You two are awake as well,” Wu Lingtian noted as he made his way between the partition that separated the bathtub from the rest of the room. z7mynS

“I have trouble sleeping in new places,” Liang Jun admitted with a sigh. “I can sleep really late, but I’ll end up waking up when the sunrises.”

“I was awoken by him,” Su Han said, sitting down on the bedside.

Wu Lingtian glanced around. “Were you two the only two in the room?”

“We were,” Liang Jun sighed wistfully. “I feel bad for the other guys. None of them are nearly as neat as Su-shixiong.” bLokXD

Su Han glanced at Liang Jun. “I can’t say I’m lucky though.”

“What? Why not?!” Liang Jun stood from his seat. “I’m the perfect roommate!”

“You snore quite loudly,” Su Han said. He pointed at his mouth and revealed clenched teeth. “And you grind your teeth when you’re really tired.”

Liang Jun scoffed, his face turning crimson. He glanced back at Wu Lingtian emerging from behind the partition. He looked back at Su Han. “So, what? Didn’t you sleep fine anyway?” O7JZz3

“Yes, yes, I slept perfectly well. I loved listening to you snore and grind your teeth,” Su Han’s lips curled mischievously.

Wu Lingtian’s gaze hovered on him for a moment as he settled down at the vanity and adjusted the mirror to face him. The smile reminded Wu Lingtian that Su Han truly was Fan Yi’s disciple.

Liang Jun puffed out his cheeks and raised his finger to point at Su Han. However, whatever he wanted to say just died in the back of his throat. He made a disgruntled noise and sat down on the edge of his bed.

“In fact, there is nothing to be embarrassed about,” Wu Lingtian said as he pulled his hair back. u6pIeH

Liang Jun straightened. “Lord Immortal, do you snore and grind your teeth?”

Su Han bit back a smile and turned away from the two.

“No,” Wu Lingtian smoothed back the baby hairs onto his head before tying his ponytail into place. “But my shijie did.”

“Your shijie is…Zhou Ying’an?” Liang Jun fell into silence. He let out a bright laugh. “Lord Immortal, are you allowed to share that with us?” 6QmYwg

“It is natural. There is no reason I would not be able to,” Wu Lingtian said, pushing the hairpin through the crown on his head. He stood and turned to the two disciples. “Do you want breakfast?”

Liang Jun stood up. “Yes!”

“We can get breakfast at the inn. I hear they serve breakfast,” Su Han said, standing up as well.

“Aw, but there was a really good looking bun place across the street,” Liang Jun said. “I could still smell the lingering scents when they were closing.” 4aRIsu

Su Han opened his mouth to scold Liang Jun about wasting money when he didn’t need to, but Wu Lingtian spoke faster.

“I will buy it,” Wu Lingtian said. He stepped towards the door and opened it before tilting his head towards the exit. “Let us go.”

Wu Lingtian hesitated by the steps before retracting his steps. “One moment.”

Su Han and Liang Jun watched Wu Lingtian walk up a flight of stairs. Liang Jun inched towards Su Han and tugged at his sleeve. “Da-shixiong.” WsPjwd

“Hm?”

“Don’t you think Lord Immortal is nicer than the rumors say?” Liang Jun said, his eyes still concentrated on the staircase.

Su Han nodded. “He is a lot friendlier.”

“He doesn’t seem at all like a coldblooded person,” Liang Jun continued. He clicked his tongue. “Why do righteous cultivators always make up rumors? They did that with Sect Leader as well, saying that he’s the type of person to not even blink before he kills thousands of people.” Zu2K6j

Jianghu is filled with liars and rumors. People get bored of living so long, so they have to make gossip,” Su Han murmured. “It’s best for us if we don’t believe in those rumors. Remember to always make judgements based on how you know the person.”

Liang Jun nodded. “Yes, da-shixiong.”

Wu Lingtian returned moments later. A spiritual pouch hung at his side. A black veiled straw hat sat on top of his head, obscuring his face as he approached them.

“Let us go,” Wu Lingtian said as he walked past them. VFxnYy

Su Han and Liang Jun obediently followed after Wu Lingtian.

Although Wu Lingtian did not speak much during their short journey, he did not dissuade Liang Jun from recounting something odd that had happened to him or something fantastical that he felt that he should bring up. Wu Lingtian listened patiently and hummed when appropriate. To Su Han, who was watching silently to the side, he found it quite amusing. It was like a child seeking approval from their guardian.

When they arrived at the bun stan, Wu Lingtian stood off to the side as Liang Jun and Su Han ordered. His eyes wandered down the streets. It was still early in the morning and few people were up. Those that were were all part of the working class. A majority were setting up shop or preparing to open for the day.

Liang Jun turned to Wu Lingtian. He was about to open his mouth to call, when Su Han held his shoulder. “Tian-ge.” M1zRgm

Wu Lingtian turned and pulled his money out as Su Han pulled Liang Jun away.

Liang Jun’s eyes widened. He stared at Su Han until the young man leaned down. “Lord Immortal is in a precarious situation right now. It would not be wise to just call out to him willy-nilly.”

Liang Jun let out a hum of understanding. He glanced back at Wu Lingtian and the thudding beat of his heart slowed. He had originally thought that Wu Lingtian would get angry but that did not seem to be the case.

Reluctant to return into the inn so soon, the trio took a walk down the streets as they ate. Liang Jun’s eyes seemed to widen every moment, his shock increasing with everything he saw. Although he had been to cities this far into Xianping, he had never been to this particular city. The quaint little dock city reminded Liang Jun of WuYe City on one hand and not at all in the other. sBS9IN

“What are these lanterns up for?” Liang Jun asked Wu Lingtian.

Wu Lingtian glanced at the lanterns strung up all over across the running rivers. “There is a small god they believe in here. Legend has it, during a drought many thousands of years ago, a river spirit rose and sacrificed itself to give rain and respite to the town. Every time summer shifts to fall, they still honor her.”

“Wow,” Liang Jun hummed. “That’s so cool!”

Su Han scoffed. “You think everything is cool.” wEXAgl

“Isn’t it though?” Liang Jun asked enthusiastically. He looked at Wu Lingtian with sparkling eyes. When the latter nodded, Liang Jun simply tilted his head in triumph.

As Su Han laughed and teased his shidi, Wu Lingtian’s gaze grew somewhat distant. He suppressed the vague memory that was begging to resurface in his mind. Just as he turned away from the river, his eyes locked with a man standing above the docks. The man’s beady eyes narrowed and he sauntered over, followed by his entourage.

“Wu Lingtian?”

The name was exceptionally loud amidst the rumbling crowd. In that moment, silence fell over everyone. Su Han and Liang Jun stopped bickering. They glanced at the beady eyed man and then at Wu Lingtian. X3UB5y

“It’s you, isn’t it?” the beady eyed man urged. However, it was clearly not the urging of a friend. The man’s expression was smug beyond compare. His jaw was jutted out to the side as he stopped in front of Wu Lingtian. His arms were crossed over his chest as he leaned forward to gaze under the black veil.

Wu Lingtian moved back from the man.

“Hah!” the beady eyed man leaned back and raised his voice. “Wu Lingtian, you still dare to show your face in the Xianping Province? I thought you had already run away with your tail tucked between your legs.” The man glanced at Su Han and Liang Jun standing behind Wu Lingtian. He pointed at them. “Are these little rats from that trash sect you’re hiding in?”

Wu Lingtian turned to Su Han and Liang Jun. “Let us go.” rjUYBd

“Hey,” the man stepped in front of Wu Lingtian. His servants moved to back him up. “Yu Lan Sword Immortal, when have you become so rude? Did you lose all your manners after spending a few weeks with that group of wastrels?”

“Was—”

Wu Lingtian held up his hand to stop Liang Jun. “What do you want, Young Master Hong?”

Liang Jun bit down on his lips and receded behind Wu Lingtian. There was unwillingness in his eyes but he didn’t say anything and only turned away. odBK7R

“What do I want?” Hóng Fù (红傅) laughed. “I want justice!”

At that sentence, the men behind Hong Fu began making a ruckus. They cupped their hands together around their mouths and began shouting for people to gather around. Su Han stepped forward but Wu Lingtian gripped his arm and tugged him back. He turned around to warn Su Han, but before he could say a thing, the straw hat was ripped from his head, jerking him forward slightly. Su Han and Liang Jun reached out to steady Wu Lingtian.

“Hey! Don’t you think you’re being too outrageous?” Su Han snapped.

“Hah! What’s this little brat doing talking to me?” Hong Fu stepped forward cockily. “I’m being outrageous? How am I being outrageous?” zJHZL0

“You are being disrespectful,” Su Han took a step forward as well.

“Su Han,” Wu Lingtian pulled at Su Han’s arm.

Su Han pursed his lips and unwillingly took a step back. An anger boiled within him. He wanted nothing more than to lash out and jump Hong Fu with Liang Jun at that moment but after hearing Wu Lingtian’s voice he slowly calmed back down. Until Hong Fu spoke again.

“Why can’t I be disrespectful to a traitor?” Hong Fu’s voice increased in volume. If someone didn’t know, they would think he was putting on a roadside show and that, at any moment, someone would come out and break a stone slab on their chest. “What’s someone who killed their own shizun got anything to do with the word ‘respect’?” iyZ1kf

Hong Fu stepped forward as the crowd began to murmur and point fingers. He slapped Wu Lingtian’s cheek. “You’re worse than a dog.”

“You piece of shit,” Liang Jun reached for his sword but was once again pushed back by Hong Fu.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Wu Lingtian looked Hong Fu in the eyes. “I did not kill my shizun.”

Hong Fu barked out a laugh. “You’re only saying that now because everyone’s watching you! What did you do before? Didn’t you point your sword at everyone? Didn’t you just run away?” VONa7Y

“They weren’t even going to give him a fair trial!” Liang Jun said, stepping out from behind Wu Lingtian. “They would have killed him even though he’s innocent!”

“Who said they weren’t going to give him a fair trial?” Hong Fu raised an eyebrow. He looked back at his servants. “It’s Drifting Clouds Mountain Sect! Of course, they would give him a fair trial.”

“That’s right!”

“Of course!” 3ZKT s

The crowd of people hummed in agreement. Narrowed eyes and suspicious glances were being thrown in their direction.

Suddenly, from the crowd, a rotten tomato soared across the sky and hit Wu Lingtian square in the side of his head. Wu Lingtian’s head moved to the side from the impact, but he remained standing still. In a matter of seconds, rotten vegetables flew in Wu Lingtian’s direction. The aim of the people was quite impressive. Although some landed near Hong Fu and his gang, as well as near Su Han and Liang Jun, a majority of the items fell onto Wu Lingtian. His white outfit was soon stained with tomato and persimmon juice.

Hong Fu laughed. He stepped forward once more. The crowd had settled down after venting their anger. He slapped the back of his hand against Wu Lingtian’s cheek. “How does it feel? From being the son of heaven to being the dirt of the earth that people step on. Is it good? Who told you to be so arrogant before?”

Wu Lingtian lifted his gaze and stared at Hong Fu. He lifted his hand to grab Hong Fu by the wrist and twisted his arm until he spun. He kicked the back of Hong Fu’s leg and forced him to the ground. The man yelped in pain as his cheek pressed against the heated concrete below them. Wu Lingtian drove his knee into Hong Fu’s back as the crowd retreated in fright. Sio9EI

“Are you done?” Wu Lingtian asked softly.

“Y-you—get off me!”

“I asked you if you were done,” Wu Lingtian said.

“Get! Off! Me!” ocExOZ

“If you were yelling at me on behalf of my shizun, then I would be able to handle it,” Wu Lingtian said, pushing his knee harder against his back. “But if you were trying to teach me some type of lesson due to my previous arrogance, then I am afraid I cannot stand for that.”

Wu Lingtian pressed Hong Fu further down every time he struggled. His face was devoid of any emotion and his eyes were chillingly cold. No one dared to move a muscle. No one dared to breathe too loudly.

“Let me go! If you don’t let me go right now, my brother will come and—ack! Wu Lingtian, you better watch out!”

Wu Lingtian stared at the pitiful existence under him and slowly released him. The man shoved Wu Lingtian off and scurried back off with his servants, who hurried to brush him clean. The red mark against his face was rather comical to look at. HEIdKB

He pointed a shaky finger at Wu Lingtian. “You white-eyed wolf! You still dare to act so arrogant? Just you wait until Drifting Clouds Mountain Sect gets ahold of you! I can’t wait to see you dead!”

“Is that how a member of a righteous sect should talk?” a languid voice emerged from the crowd. “How embarrassing.”

Wu Lingtian Hong Fu turned towards the voice. A long sigh followed as the man folded his fan. He clicked his tongue as he looked Wu Lingtian up and down. He then looked distastefully at Hong Fu.

“Tian-gege,” a young man bounced out from behind the man and to Wu Lingtian’s side. W3z2LA

Wu Lingtian nodded, though his eyes showed he was surprised.

“F-Feng Ling Immortal,” Hong Fu and his servants clasped their hands into a salute. “I—”

“Ah,” Situ Hong held up his fan to stop Hong Fu from speaking further. “Don’t call to me. Listening to you just makes me want to throw up.”

Wu Lingtian stared blankly at Situ Hong. He soon found his voice again and cleared his throat. “Feng Ling.” d7FkP3

“Yu Lan,” Situ Hong’s lips curled into a charming smile. His fan snapped open. “Long time no see.”
