Main Characters

Fan Jialuo (梵伽罗): A soul which awakened from his deep sleep to find himself in his vessel ‘Fan Jialuo’, who then takes on that very identity and starts living as him in the world, yet isn’t really alive. He seems to have originated from an ancient era and wields a psychic power, but we still don’t know who or what the real him actually is. Oh, and he likes to sleep for days in a bathtub full of ice water.

Zhao Wenyan (赵文彦): The CEO of Xinghui Entertainment Company; the original Fan Jialuo’s male god, who he chased after with all his might. The one who rejected the original Fan Jialuo’s confession. He is the one who suddenly bails Fan Jialuo out of a ‘flaming’ interrogation with the police. He acts as a go-between for Fan Kaixuan when he gives Fan Jialuo a check and a property document from him. Is he doing this merely out of kindness? I don’t know, and to be honest, I hate this ex!

Zhuang Zhen (庄禛; Zhuāng zhēn): A Team Leader in the Criminal Police Department of the Public Security Bureau; the Leader of the task force investigating Gao Yize’s death. A hero with ‘thirty six scars for twenty-one meritorious deeds…’. Originally a soldier but has now retired on account of injuries he suffered during his military days. His military background makes him perfectly eligible for the title of ‘Team Leader’. However, Fan Jialuo says that what endangers him aren’t his injuries, but he himself. I wonder what it means~

Bai Mu (白幕; Bái mù): The Head of the Bai Family and President of the Bai Corporation, which includes the Dingsheng International Company—the company which has invested heavily into the construction and creation of the Moon Bay Garden Community. His ‘four pillars of destiny/eight characters of birth’ have gaps and omissions which resulted in him suffering from all kinds of illness and misfortunes soon after birth, and thus he needed someone to supplement for those gaps—which led to his parents adopting Bai Lin, who fulfilled these conditions perfectly. Hey, but he met Fan Jialuo recently. Will his misfortune turn into fortune?

Song Rui (宋睿; Sòng ruì): A world-renowned psychologist and a consultant on Criminal Psychology for the Ministry of Public Security. He makes great progress in Gao Yize’s case when he sees through Fan Jialuo’s so-called ‘tricks’ and correlates it all with Buddhist theories (those terms can drive any layman dizzy). Our MC says — ‘I see a black hole in your heart. No, to be more precise, it’s an abyss.’ Ohh, so mysterious, I like it~

The Entertainment Industry and Zhao Group

Cao Xiaofeng (曹晓峰; Cáo xiǎofēng): STARS’s agent/broker, heavily-biased towards his preferred artistes. He pressured Fan Jialuo to quit the industry after his scandals were released on the Internet.

Mr. Liu (): A Deputy General Manager in the Xinghui Entertainment Company.

Gao Yize (高一泽; Gāo yīzé): STARS’s leader; the one who fell to his death from the top floor of the building which houses one of the studios of the Xinghui Entertainment Company. His real name is Gao Fei, he changed it before he debuted as an idol. About his past… mmm, you can read all about it in chapters 30-35…

Sun Ying (孙影; Sūn yǐng): A member of STARS, who hates and despises Fan Jialuo so much that he released black material on him onto the Internet, so as to hasten the destruction of Fan Jialuo’s career in the entertainment industry.

Su Fengxi (苏枫溪; Sū fēngxī): Zhao Wenyan’s girlfriend, who is filming abroad at the time of Gao Yize’s death. A Movie Queen and successful actress with a host of ‘love affairs’, mostly with powerful people belonging to various different industries. She keeps telling the public that she’s ‘single’, yet she has Zhao Wenyan as a lover. Hmm, I smell something suspicious about this woman~

Su Mian (苏眠; Sū mián): Su Fengxi’s ‘younger brother’ who grew up with her in the same orphanage. News of his and Su Fengxi’s many ‘love affairs’ during the time both of them were rising as stars was not conducive to their images, so they proclaimed their relationship to be that of an ‘older sister-younger brother’, but the real truth is still unknown. He invests a lot of money in a project with very good prospects in Sichuan, but because the government moved the area development project to Dongchuan, his efforts and funds have both gone down the drain. 

Zhao Guoan/Elder Zhao (赵国安; Zhào guó’ān): Zhao Wenyan’s grandfather.

Xiao Lin (小林): Zhao Guoan’s assistant + bodyguard.

Xiao Guang (小广): Zhao Guoan’s assistant + bodyguard.

The Police Squad

Liu Tao (刘韬; Liú tāo): The Vice-Captain of the task force in-charge of investigating Gao Yize’s death. He is about forty-five years old, has a bad temper, and his nickname is ‘Fat Fish.’ He suffers from hair loss and nearly goes bald because of the difficulty in investigating Gao Yize’s case, not to mention the ‘countless’ tricks Fan Jialuo has played on the task force.

Xiao Luo/Luo Hong (罗洪; Luō hóng): One of the members of the task force in-charge of investigating Gao Yize’s death. 

Liao Fang (廖芳; Liào fāng): The beautiful policewoman who was in-charge of taking written notes during Fan Jialuo’s first interrogation. Also the one who lends him an umbrella. She is the only one who believes that Fan Jialuo is innocent and did what he should have done in Gao Yize’s death— but yeah, no one believes her. 

Xiao Li/ (小李; Xiǎo lǐ): A quiet young officer working as a network technician in the Criminal Police Department, very proficient in hacking and related technology, and a homebound man. 

Yang Shengfei (杨胜飞; Yáng shèngfēi): A young officer, who gets very angry after being ‘read’ by Fan Jialuo during an interrogation session. He seems to have a nightmarish memory about his childhood, one about losing someone very precious to him. He later confesses to the task force that he lost his sister in a tragic way, and has sworn to find the culprit behind his sister’s murder…  

Xiao Liu (小刘; Xiǎo liú): a new face who’ll hopefully get a proper introduction in the future?

The Fan Family

Fan Luoshan (梵洛山; Fàn luòshān): Fan Jialuo’s father, the current Head of the Fan Family. He severed their father-son relationship as soon as his wife died and publicly announced that Fan Jialuo was an adopted child, so as to acknowledge and give status to his illegitimate son, Fan Kaixuan.

Fan Kaixuan (梵凯旋; Fàn kǎixuán): Fan Luoshan’s illegitimate son, who is abroad during Gao Yize’s death. ‘A person who should not have existed’ — says Fan Jialuo. He was born into a poor family (well, he is an illegitimate child), and worked really hard, doing whatever he could to reach the position he is in now. Currently known as the ‘golden hand’ on Wall Street, all investments he makes are 100% successful, and he has now acquired unimaginable wealth and connections. He gives Fan Jialuo some money and a property document for a villa, just to ‘help’ his ‘half-brother,’ and thereby of course, save his face.

The Bai Family and Related Persons

Master Zhou (周老; Zhōu lǎo): A Master of Feng Shui; the grey-haired old man who inspected the feng shui of the Moon Bay Garden Community with Bai Mu. 

Bai Lin (白林; Bái lín): An adopted son of the Bai Family, who entered the household to supplement Bai Mu’s incomplete four pillars of destiny and keep him away from any danger. But as he grew up, his ambition also grew larger, and he began to covet the Bai Family’s wealth for himself.

Uncle Li (李叔; Lǐ shū): The Bai Family’s housekeeper.

Tenants in Building 1

Xu Yiyang (许艺洋; Xǔ yìyáng): the little boy lived on the 17th floor, the one being abused badly by his mother, the one Fan Jialuo pays a little attention to…

Characters in Related Cases

The First Case:

Wang Wei (王伟; Wáng wěi): Deceased male, aged 21. A professional plumber who died on the second day after Fan Jialuo’s third death notice was issued. He graduated from the same High School as Gao Yize, and was in the same year as him.

Zhao Kai: (赵开; Zhào kāi): Deceased male, aged 21. After graduating from junior high school, he led a confused life in society, and never managed to hold onto a proper job. He died on the third day after Fan Jialuo’s second death notice was issued. He died by being stabbed in his stomach by a sharp weapon.

Mao Xiaoming (毛小明; Máo xiǎomíng): Deceased male, aged 20. He also graduated from the same junior high school as Zhao Kai did and died of drug overdose on the second day after Fan Jialuo’s fourth death notice was issued. He was Zhao Kai’s lackey. 

Ruan Ye/Ye Zi (阮叶/叶子): Female, the one who is kidnapped and then subjected to  Chinese water torture. She’s the ‘so-called’ best friend of Xiao Rui, and is the one who destroyed her slowly and painfully.   

Xiao Rui/ Rui Rui/Hua Rui (): Deceased female, committed suicide in year XX17 because ruan Ye had contacted her again and she didn’t want to suffer that torture again. Also, she probably succumbed to the nightmares that haunted her, specifically, those of the torture she suffered during her high school years. 

Xiao Jin/sound technician (肖金; Xiào jīn): Male, Xiao Rui’s elder brother. He’s the one responsible for committing the four murders, and for kidnapping Ruan Ye—all of which he does in an attempt to avenge the injustice his sister suffered. Anyway, the police manage to catch him. He felt responsible for every tragic event that happened to his sister, and feels pain that he realised she was suffering only after her death. Poor man, I hope you can live a better life from here on… or not spoiler alert.

The Second Case [not a big case, but is worth remembering:)] :

Shen Youquan (沈友全; Shěn yǒuquán): The President of KN Group Asia, the company that filed a couple of lawsuits contesting breach of contract against Fan Jialuo. 

Shen Yurao/Xiao Bao (沈玉饶; Shěn yù ráo): Shen Youquan’s son, Shen Yuling’s twin brother. He had a weak constitution since birth and often fell ill. He is the apple of the entire family’s eyes because of his cute and lovely appearance and gentle character.

Shen Yuling/Xiao Nan (Shěn Yùlíng): Shen Youquan’s daughter, Shen Yurao’s twin sister. A cheerful and lively girl, and looks like an ordinary average Chinese, just like her father.

Zhong Huilu (钟慧璐; Zhōng Huìlù): Shen Youquan’s wife. 

Long Chengsheng (龙成生; Lóng Chéng shēng): Shen Youquan’s driver/ bodyguard.

《The World of Strange People》

Song Wennuan (宋温暖; Sòng wēnnuǎn): The Chief Director and Producer of the program 《The World of Strange People》. She’s Song Rui’s cousin. 

Dr. Ouyang (欧阳博士): a sociologist, one of the judges in the program.

Dr. Lin (林博士): a metaphysician, one of the judges in the program.

Dr. Qian (钱博士): a philosopher, one of the judges in the program.

A Huo (阿火): a contestant, the teenager who has psychic ability in his sense of smell, the one following Fan Jialuo. I think he’s cute…

Ding Puhang (丁浦航): a contestant, the handsome man with expensive suit and diamond earrings.

Yuan Zhongzhou (元中州): a contestant, the middle-aged man in black robe and handbell, always rang the bell when doing his divination.

He Jinglian : a contestant, the young girl with a pale face leaning against the arms of a middle-aged woman. She can perceive any emotions, one of Fan Jialuo’s little tails??

Chongming (崇明): a contestant, the young man in a Taoist robe, he is a Taoist priest being raised in Yundou temple from child, you’ll know his ability later…

Zhu Xiya (朱希雅): a contestant, the good looking and first rate beauty, she practiced witchcraft.

Xiaxia (): a staff member, the owner of the pug that died after she bad-mouth Chongming… I feel sad for her 🙁

Yu Yuntian (俞云天): Song Wennuan’s boyfriend, a well-known oil painting master in China and abroad, volunteer subject number 3.

Ya Ya (丫丫): Song Wennuan’s assistant, following her from 18 years old and can be said as Song Wennuan’s direct student, currently learning screenwriting under her support, volunteer subject number 2.

Jie Furui (杰弗瑞): Song Wennuan’s exclusive makeup artist, volunteer subject number 1.

Song Beini/Nini (宋贝妮): Song Wennuan’s niece, her older brother’s daughter.

Others

Sister Qing/heavy-makeup woman (庆姐; Qìng jiě): Female. One of the 4 mysterious people who ventured into the Moon Bay Garden to kidnap Fan Jialuo, she wants to use him as a ‘money tree’, by blackmailing him in quite a few indescribable ways.

Yellow-haired man (黄毛; Huáng máo): Deceased, male. One of the 4 mysterious people who ventured into the Moon Bay Garden to kidnap Fan Jialuo. 

Fourth Brother (四哥; Sì gē): One of the 4 mysterious people who ventured into the Moon Bay Garden to kidnap Fan Jialuo. Is he dead? When he was last mentioned, he had fallen unconscious after being ‘accidentally’ stabbed in his chest, but we don’t know if he gets proper treatment for it or not after that.

Brother Trump Card (): One of the 4 mysterious people who ventured into the Moon Bay Garden to kidnap Fan Jialuo. He’s the one who picks up the ice-cold rolled bundle of money that Fan Jialuo threw into the greenery.

|| Chinese Prefixes and Suffixes ||

Xiao (小; xiǎo means little): adding it in front of a person’s given name (i.e. surname-given name), shows the affection with which families, relatives and good friends call that person, sort of a nickname; when adding in front of the surname, it becomes the short name coworkers use to call each other in the workplace. [ex. Zhuang Zhen calls Luo(last name) Hong(given name) as Xiao Luo; his family may use Xiao Hong or Hong Hong instead]

Lao (老; lǎo means big): can be used as an informal way of showing a casual relationship; also used as a prefix to show familiarity for people of the same or an elder generation; and used as a prefix when calling someone who has a position higher than your own in the workplace. [ex. Song Rui calls Zhuang Zhen as Lao Zhuang]

A (阿; ā): used in front of a shortened form of peoples’ given names to express familiarity; an informal way of calling so as to show intimacy with someone, mostly used when calling people of the same or younger generation. [ex. like when calling Yang Shengfei as A Fei]
