The Black Saint is My StalkerCh88 - Just for you

The invasion of demons at Lyrchester’s Edelstein Pillar was easily quelled, but that did not make the situation any better than it was before.

For one, it made little sense that a bunch of lesser demons could breach the layers and layers of protective wards surrounding the facility. The entire staff was on high alert; from guardians to researchers and leaders alike. A few of the desire demons had been captured and were brought to a holding facility to undergo examination. amUvd1

The dark room featured but a few bright spotlights that shone down upon its prisoner. Guards were stationed at the ready, lined against the walls within the room but also outside.

A single desire demon was tangled in blessed silver chains. The large wolf-like creature could do nothing but writhe and snarl at its surroundings. But no matter how much the beast struggled, it could not gain any purchase, its muzzle and limbs securely bound. Even if it were to free itself, a lowly creature as such did not stand a chance against those that stood around it.

“It’s just a normal desire demon…” Valtteri sighed heavily, his arms crossed over his chest. He was visibly frustrated, a frown transforming his usual lazy expression.

“Shut up, would you?” Oscar hissed as he continued his investigation. Unlike Valtteri who stood a foot away, Oscar knelt next to the creature, scrutinizing it up close without any regard to its sharp teeth and claws. RhQmrb

Valtteri frowned, scratching the back of his head but ultimately choosing silence.

But as the seconds passed, Oscar’s survey wasn’t yielding any better result. The scowl on his face only deepened.

Valtteri was right. It was just a normal desire demon. There wasn’t a single thing special about the creature.

Which begged one to ask, how in the world did it get through the veils of wards and technology surrounding the high-security facility? Things weren’t adding up.

Oscar rose to his feet and stepped away from the bound creature.

“So…? What are we going to do with it, Boss?” Valterri’s low voice chirped with question.

Oscar ignored him completely and walked towards the exit, standing just by the doorway as he reached up to tap his earpiece. Though he had heard that the NUM had begun implementing an easy-to-use and accessible communication spell system, Oscar didn’t trust that crap. He was more than happy that his workplace still employed a more traditional method of communication. “How’s the inspection going?”

“The truth is…” a hesitant voice mumble on the other side, “Everything looks to be normal… I can’t possibly guess what could have caused the breach.” QUAyqs

Again, Oscar tried to tune the tall Northerner out, continuing to ramble into the radio, “Oh, and get me a list of anyone’s who’s entered the building within the last twenty hours. I don’t give a damn if people are going to throw a fit about it. Tell them to suck it up.”

“Earth to Oscar?” Valtteri finally looked up, exasperation dripping from his voice. “Are you listening to me?” cFxuJY

Oscar snapped, “What part of shut up do you not understand?”

“Uh,” Valtteri responded intelligently, sighing heavily at the verbal abuse. But he did not seem bothered past mild annoyance. “If you answer my question then I’ll shut up nicely. It’s not like… I want to talk to you anyway.”

An indignant huff left Oscar’s lips, his green eyes darting from the Northerner to the shackled demon. “Just dispose of the thing, it’s a bloody eyesore.”

True to his words, Valtteri remained silent, merely gesturing a salute before drawing his crossbow from his back. Losing interest, Oscar turned back around and was reading to leave the room. N32pfl

A terrible shriek sounded behind him, followed by that annoying voice once more. “Oh shit. Boss, you should take a look at this.”

With a snarl at the tip of his teeth, Oscar wrestled with his frustrations. “You damn bastard what did I—”

Chrysanthemum Garden.

“Oscar,” Valtteri said with pointed finality, his tall form hunched as he knelt by the desire demon’s corpse. The black creature was slowly dissipating into a wispy obsidian smoke; the demon’s essence returning to whence it came. There was nothing particularly interesting about the exorcism of a lesser demon, at least not usually.

But the sharpness of Valtteri’s voice told Oscar that it was no usual situation. He clamped his mouth shut and quickly rejoined his coworker by the dissipating demon. 03CrD5

As the cloudy remnants of the demon departed, a peculiar object remained.

A small, crimson thing. A leaf— no, a mistletoe, crimson in color.

Oscar reached for it but Valtteri stopped him, grabbing his hand before it could come into contact with the crimson-colored plant.

“Don’t. It’s witchcraft.” Tb5zP4

Annoyance ripened, Oscar growled and retracted his hand. He recalled that the entire Darmine incident happened because a few pesky witches decided that summoning higher demons might be a good idea. “I fucking hate witches,” he hissed.

“Uh,” Valtteri only sighed and shrugged. He decided it best not to remind Oscar that he was one-quarter witch.

“Here’s your license. Congratulations Li Han, you are officially a fully registered C-rank hunter.” The receptionist smiled at him as she slid his license over to him without much ceremony. “Feel free to take on any C-rank or lower missions at your convenience.” She pointed to the board that stood next to the receptionist’s desk which featured a bunch of pinned missions. “If you are inclined to take on higher-ranked cases then you will have to register with an operator first.” yv5YnH

Han Li licked his lips, his fingers gliding over the edge of plastic. Who thought that his retirement would be so short-lived? But he didn’t have the time to ruminate. In fact, he was feeling rather impatient.

Han Li leaned over the receptionist’s desk and asked, “Are there any high-profile operators currently available?”

The local Hunter’s Guild was a building that saw plenty of activity. Not only was it the place for hunters to take care of their legal work but there were mission postings, training facilities, and other services provided. But Han Li had specifically come at the early hours of the day so he had more freedom to harass the receptionist with questions and demands without being too annoying.

Unluckily, there was already a line forming behind him. Only two people, but a line was a line. YW0d4L

The receptionist’s pleasantly professional face pulled into a troubled, constipated look. “You’ll be hard-pressed to find a high-profile operator at your rank, I fear. Might I ask why you want someone high-profiled?”

Han Li huffed, expecting her response. But still, he answered, “I need someone who can do something about my travel restrictions.”

The receptionist stared at him with wide eyes, before fumbling through the files that she had been ready to set aside. Of course, it was likely that she missed the fact that he was demi-human entirely.

“Ah— that— about that—” The poor woman struggled to collect herself. And it took all of Han Li’s willpower not to sigh heavily and sink his face into his hands out of sheer annoyance. doKYTR

What neither of them had expected was for a hand to suddenly come down on Han Li’s shoulder.

He jolted, jumping back, and almost crashed into the person behind him.

There was a low, melodic chuckle. “Travel restrictions you say? There might be a possibility that I could do something about that.”

The man was tall and lanky, with short brown hair and narrow blue eyes. The glasses that sat on his nose were big and clunky but they matched his white button-up and fitted brown trousers. BgEYd

“Uh,” Han Li blinked. All sorts of warning signals were going on in his mind but he also knew that there wouldn’t be many in the world who could realistically help him lift his travel restrictions. “And who might you be?”

“John Right,” the man winked. “Han Li, I take it? I know much about you.”

“And I know nothing about you,” Han Li retorted.

“Hmm…” John narrowed his eyes just slightly. “What if I were to say… I happen to be that high-profiled operator you were asking for earlier?” xSAwCX

“Oh,” Han Li blinked. “Then you should have said so sooner.”

The self-proclaimed high-profile operator tossed his head back and laughed.

As improbable as the situation seemed, one couldn’t exactly lie about being a high-profile operator and get away with it, especially when it came to registering with a hunter. Basically, even if he was lying, he wouldn’t be able to get very far with the lie. And though this John guy was kind of creepy, Han Li sucked up his apprehensions and smiled, reaching out to take the operator’s hand into his own. “So, think you can get me to Britia?”

John smirked, “Maybe I can do something about it, just for you, son.” MeVq9I
