I actually know this one! I watched a history documentary on Vikings and they showed how they built their ships. They used a ax, chisel, and hammer to split the log into parts. The ax was then used to shave and shape the parts into planks, leaving pieces at each end that would dove tale together, in an extremely tight fit. They then steamed the wooden planks so that they could shape them, and then made sure they stayed in place by using the hammer to get the tight fit needed. Rinse and repeat. They made the ship water tight by filling the spaces between the planks with a mixture of moss or animal hair mixed with tar or tallow.
