“How’s Ares doing?” Dex’s muffled voice filled Kloh’s ears through the headphones.
He smiled as he listened to the most beautiful voice he had ever heard.
“Better. I visited last night to soothe him when Seph had to go back to her house to grab some stuff. He was a little lucid and was responding well to the inhibitors. No indications of negative reactions.” Kloh replied as he laid back on his bed.
His last was submitted earlier that day. Everyone had started to pack their bags to leave for the semester break. He had wanted to stay until the very last moment to enjoy the quiet. And to accompany Dex, who wanted to do some private projects without questioning eyes. Lee and all his other new friends had already gone back home. The only people left in his building were students who had finals on the last day of finals week and winter graduates.
“That’s good. Are your friends still upset with you?” Came the muffled response from Dex.
Dex was busy moving around the lab, cleaning equipment from his experiment. Wesley had left an hour ago with Mars after promising to stop by before Christmas. He was the only one in the building. He continuously walked back and forth till all his equipment was by the cleaning area.
“Yep. But also I think at this point they’re just doing it for attention.” Kloh laughed. “They collectively forgave us for lying after we bought them food. Bunch of scammers they are.”
Dex laughed and shook his head, unable to argue. He knew that Lee wasn’t really upset over the whole brother thing. In fact Lee spent the night crying when he heard because as he said,
“Kloh has a real blood family now. He deserves it.”
Then he continued crying over how he was the last to find out. Dex, who was told the whole story as soon as Kloh finished giving blood for the test at the care center, could only roll his eyes and comfort his baby brother. Emphasis on baby. Granted, Dex himself was very surprised but very happy. More importantly he was also a little ashamed that he wasn’t only happy because Kloh had blood family members who loved him. No, he was also extremely happy because now he knew for a fact that there was no chance of Kloh ever ending up with Ares. It made him blush to think about because although he trusted Kloh, it didn’t stop his overactive imagination from creating various scenarios where Kloh left him for a smaller, younger omega.
“You didn’t hear it from me but Lee is definitely faking it.” Dex giggled as he rinsed out the beakers.
“Yeah.” Kloh sighed and closed his eyes. “I’m glad they aren’t truly upset.”
“They’re happy for you. A little sad that they didn’t know but still very happy for you.” Dex told him, shortly explaining the phone call he witnessed the night Lee broke into his room to cry over the whole situation.
He didn’t go into.too much detail but he reassured Kloh as best as he could that his friends truly weren’t upset. Kloh smiled, going completely soft as Dex clumsily cheered him up.
“Dex?” Kloh mumbled, interrupting Dex’s rant.
“Hmmm.” He replied as he started to stack the clean beakers to the appropriate spots.
“Come to my room when you’re done.” Kloh’s voice dipped, slowly filling with a huskiness that gave Dex a chill through the phone.
“Ookay. Yeah. Sure. I’m almost done.” Dex bit his lip as his hand shook a little.
He could recognize the tone of Kloh’s voice. That tone was always a prelude to mind blowing experiences that he was willing to give his life over for. Subconsciously he started to speed up, though the scientist in him wouldn’t let him rush the proper cleaning procedures.
Kloh could hear the clinking of equipment in the background and giggled. He could imagine Dex trying to rush through but immediately stopping himself. Then repeating the cycle after convincing himself it would be fine this one time. Kloh didn’t say much after. He quietly listened to Dex mumble and curse to himself as he finished up. The distinct sound of glasses touching, followed by the ruffle of the lab coat being taken off, the jingle of the keys being turned in the lock and the echo of footsteps down the hallway. He knew Dex had forgotten that the call was still connected. He smiled softly as he pictured his boyfriend.
Rushing to get into the elevator and annoyingly pressing the 1st floor. Dex hurrying out the front, past the glass doors and down the stairs. Then some walking and the sound of a car door being opened. Dex planned on driving his car to the lot closer to Kloh’s dorm so when they left in the morning there’d be no need to walk all the way back to his side of campus. Kloh heard the engine rumble as the car turned on. He waited a moment until he heard the door slam shut before texting Dex that he, once again, forgot to hang up the call.
Dex felt his phone buzz. He patted his jacket, trying to remember what pocket he put it in.
“Dex?” There was a knock on his window.
He momentarily stopped looking for his phone and looked up. A flash of surprise crossed his face before he quickly masked it with indifference. Outside the driver’s side door was an alpha he was familiar with.
Shaggy blonde hair that curled so perfectly that it was impossible to recreate. Dark blue eyes that almost threaded into purple territory. Full red lips, a prominent jawline chiseled by the gods themselves. A beautiful brown mocha hand with long fingers that were freshly manicured rested on his window. The man grinned wolfishly at him, the perfectly white, straight teeth blinding Dex. It was Sebastian, a man who would have broken his heart if Dex allowed him to get closer.
“Seb? What are you doing here?” Dex asked, reverting back the old nickname that he used to be forced to use or else the man wouldn’t reply.
“Call me Seb again. It’s only nice to hear when you say it.”
The memory drifted to the forefront as the man grinned at him. His phone buzzed again. Dex shook his head, coming out of the memory and looking over at the alpha. Sebastian gestured for Dex to lower the window so they could speak. Dex reflexively did so, he only stopped himself after the window hit midway down. Sebastian leaned forward, the cold air condensing into a little visible cloud as he breathed out.
“I saw you leaving and wanted to say hi. It’s been awhile.” He explained as the all too familiar strong rose scented pheromones lightly wafted into his nostrils for a second.
“It has been awhile. Pretty sure your little boyfriend preferred it that way. How is he by the way?” Dex smiled back innocently.
A flash of something passed Sebastian’s eyes and the smile faltered for a moment. A slight melancholy look filled his face.

Dex’s phone started to buzz repeatedly to the point where they both couldn’t ignore it. Dex gave him a fake smile and dug through his pockets before finding the hidden phone. The first things he saw were several message notifications from Kloh. Then the little green bar at the top of the screen indicating that he was on a call. Dex cursed. He had forgotten to end the call again. Plus he accidentally muted himself. He quickly unmuted and put the volume up.
“Dex, I swear if you don’t reply I’ll……” Kloh was anxiously speaking into the phone.
“Kloh! Relax.” Dex quickly cut him off.
“Dex? Are you okay? I heard the car turn on then what sounded like knocking then silence. Fuck! I thought you got kidnapped or something.” Kloh exhaled loudly.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t even realize. Ugh, I’m so stupid. I can’t believe it happened again.” Dex groaned and covered his face in embarrassment.
Kloh could only roughly laugh, not really feeling amused as the adrenaline was still rushing through him. He put down the shoe in his hand and kicked off the one he had managed to get on. Taking a breath to stabilize himself, he felt way more keyed up than ever before. He pulled off his jacket and threw it on the floor then opened up the window to let in some fresh air. The scent of his pheromones had nearly exploded out of him when he thought Dex was in trouble.
It was a phenomenon known as Link. It occurred between fated couples but only when there is a mark present on one of them. The one that’s marked would be able to release their counterparts pheromone for a split second when in danger. It was reserved for situations where the partner felt they were truly in danger. On the other hand, when the non marked partner felt like their partner was in danger they released an unscientifically potent pheromone that surprised even the highest level of pressure. But like the others it only lasted for a moment. The military has been trying to understand the way that phenomenon occurred to recreate the pheromone potential but had failed. Eventually they accepted it as an unexplained mystery.
“Kloh? Baby, okay?” Dex’s voice grounded him.
“Yeah. I’m fine.” Kloh let out a breath.
“Good. I swear I’m fine. I just ran into an old friend.” Dex explained and his eyes flashed over to Sebastian who was clearly listening to the conversation. “It’s Sebastian. I’ve mentioned him before.”
“Sebastian?” Kloh echoed.
As in the only other alpha Dex had seriously considered having a relationship with. In that same breath, Kloh felt his canines ache and a tight feeling in his chest. He temporarily lost contact with his beloved only to end reconnecting and realizing he was with another alpha. An alpha that may be a threat to him and Dex’s relationship. Kloh felt his pheromone output increase and momentarily was grateful that most people had left campus. Because although the window was open, the clove scented pheromones were still very strong. They wafted outside into the open air.
“”Hello. I’m Sebastian. D is truly fine. It’s my fault he was held up.” Sebastian spoke up.
“D?” Kloh echoed.
He gritted his teeth and took several breaths. He knew that he was overreacting. But he couldn’t stop the thoughts that were filling his head. Telling him that Sebastian was going to steal Dex. It was his fault Sebastian was talking to Dex, he hadn’t marked his omega the way he was supposed to. He should’ve marked Dex. Then everyone would know who he belonged to.
“Ah yes sorry. Dex is fine. Really sorry, you know, habitats are hard to break.” Sebastian laughed, eyes twinkling as he peeked at Dex for his reaction.
He was however disappointed to find Dex, fully focusing on the phone in his hand.
“It’s fine.” Kloh nearly spat the words into.the microphone, surprised at the amount of maliciousness in his voice.
As were Dex and Sebastian. Dex got a little wide eyed then worried.
“Kloh? Are you alright?” Dex cautiously asked.
“Yeah, you good over there?” Sebastian continued.
“Peachy.” Kloh grunted. “Dex, please hurry over. I have something to talk about. Please be careful and drive safely. Also keep your phone on. Love you.”
Kloh hung up the phone after Dex’s love you reply drifted into the speaker. Dex bit his lip. He could tell something was wrong with Kloh. He had an idea of what it might be but was worried that he was wrong. All in all, he decided to head over as soon as possible.
“I’m sorry Sebastian, I have to go.” He said to the alpha next to him.
“Yeah totally. We’ll talk later.” Sebastian gave him an understanding smile and stepped away.
Dex nodded without replying and turned to the window. Then he drove out the parking lot. Several minutes into the drive his phone rang. He had already reached the other side of campus. It was Kloh. He accepted the call and made sure it was connected to the car.
“Kloh?” Dex answered, as he pulled into the parking lot by Kloh’s dorm.
“I realized that once you come up you might be overwhelmed by the pheromones so I wanted to inform you now.” Kloh resolutely said.
Confused, Dex arched his brow. “Alright. Give me three minutes. I’m gonna park.”
“Okay.”
Kloh took a deep breath. Although he still felt keyed up, thankfully the strong pheromones had started to disappear. He could hear Dex talking to himself as he parked, a little habitat Dex had developed from the time when he initially learned to drive. If someone listens closely they would hear him reciting the rules for parking. It was insanely cute and for some reason calmed Kloh down at that moment.
“Alright. I’m parked. Go ahead.” Dex’s voice got louder as he disconnected from the car system and brought the phone to his ear.
He turned off the engine and sat there waiting for Kloh to speak. From his end he could hear Kloh shuffling around and mumbles that he couldn’t quite make out.
“Okay. Remember how I had to take the blood test after the whole Ares thing?” Kloh began.
“Yeah. Results in?” Dex replied, his fingers clenching around the engine lightly, nervously.
“They actually came back the same day but I didn’t know how to tell you.”
“Okay. That’s fine. Just tell me.” Dex urged, getting a little worried from the way Kloh was talking.
Kloh nodded to himself and with a blush whispered into the phone. “My rut is in a couple of days.”
“O……oh.” Dex was caught off guard.
It took a second to process before Dex’s eyes sparkled and his ears turned a little red.
“Yeah.” Kloh continued to whisper. “And I’m not trying to like force you into helping me through it. It’s totally your choice. I just….. wanted to let you know.”
“Hmmm. Kloh?” Dex hummed softly as the decision he had made weeks ago came up.
“Yeah.”
“I would love to help you through it.”
Kloh let out a relieved breath. “Really? Fuck, you truly are the best person in my life.”
“But there’s one thing.” Dex continued before he lost his nerve.
Kloh perked up, listening carefully.
“What is it? If it’s something I’m capable of then I’ll definitely do it.”
“I don’t want to be marked in a rut. Well I mean I want my first mark to be outside of an estrus situation.” Dex bit his bottom lip a bit embarrassed by the request.
“Marked outside of an estrus situation?” Kloh slowly repeated, processing the words.
Dex cleared his throat and said with a little more confidence. “I want to be marked before your rut.”
Kloh slowly smiled. He chuckled. The sound traveled into Dex’s ears and ran through his body. He blinked slowly, waiting for Kloh’s response.
“Baby I can definitely do that for you.” Was the response he got.
“Good. I’m sorry, is that weird?” Dex sighed and couldn’t help but ask.
Kloh chuckled again. “No, of course not. You get to decide how this happens. I’ll gladly follow whatever plan you make.”
Dex smiled and laughed a little as his nerves eased. “Planning sex isn’t romantic is it?”
“Who needs romance when I have you?” Kloh teased.
Dex laughed louder. Kloh grinned.
“Alright, glad we could figure this out while still clear headed.” Dex said with a teasing tone.
Kloh coughed a bit and chuckled. “Yeah. To be completely honest I wasn’t sure if I would’ve been able to have a full conversation with you directly in front of me.”
“Oh?”
Kloh rubbed his nose. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Sure.”
“Last time…… when you asked me to mark you. Did..”
“I had already made up my mind. Way before that night.” Dex hastily explained.
Kloh let out a breath. Once again the pheromones increased, spurned by Dex’s words.
“Really?”
“Yes. Uhmm well I actually planned on telling you after Christmas.” Dex mumbled.
Kloh’s chest tightened. It was a feeling of suffocation, coupled with a need for possession. All the energy from earlier which was only beginning to disperse gradually built back up. For a moment he thought his rut was early but thought better of it. The symptoms didn’t match any of the indicators Seph had told him about. So this was just him. This lust, love and need for Dex. He locked his canines and the thought of biting that hidden gland on the back of Dex’s neck sent a wave of lust through him. He had to take a breath to collect himself.
“Dex.” Kloh’s voice was gravely and rough.
“Kloh.” Dex replied.
“You should go home.” Kloh said with some difficulty.
“Why?” He knew. He had a feeling. But still he wanted to ask.
“Because I can’t guarantee that I won’t mark you if you come up here.” Kloh slowly said as he closed the window, trapping the new wave of pheromones in the room.
“No guarantee huh?” Dex slowly repeated, his heart rate picking up.
“I don’t think you want your first time to be in a dorm room.” Kloh spoke as he took off his shirt and let it fall to the floor.
“Pretty unromantic, yeah?” Dex took off his seat belt and went for the door.
“Yeah.” Kloh went over to the closet and pulled out a very familiar satin pitch and threw it on the bed.
“You know I was really never one for romance anyway.” Dex whispered as he closed the door behind him and headed into the building.
“I usually am but for I can make an exception.” Kloh laughed, the sound hitting Dex in the gut.
He jabbed the elevator button and took a breath as it slowly ascended. For a moment he paused and thought about what was going to happen if he kept going towards Kloh. He could hear the promise in Kloh’s voice. Dex licked his lips and hung up. Kloh heard the beeping, indicating the call ended but didn’t think too much of it. Instead he turned on the ventilation at the lowest setting, removing the heavy pheromones while still leaving it in the air.
Dex opened his locked notes section. Wesley had sent him a bunch of tips and tricks for his first time. Although he was embarrassed to have it he still read it over as the elevator approached the 14th floor.
Beep. The elevator doors shuddered open and he stepped out. For a second he caught a whiff of clove. But it quickly disappeared. He walked down the hall until he stopped in front of Kloh’s door. He hesitated but still knocked on the door.
“Dex?” Kloh stopped in front of the door, hand on the doorknob.
“Yeah. It’s me.” He replied, his voice a bit scratchy and dry from the nerves.
“Last chance to go back Dex. Seriously, I won’t feel bad or anything.” Kloh said through the door.
Dex exhaled lightly then smiled. He wanted to be here. With Kloh. And whatever happened would happen happily.
“Shut up and open the door.”
