This is 蛊 (gu) in Chinese, which usually refers to a legendary poisonous insect or worm. In xianxias that mention this, the gu normally does the bidding of the master, and is a product of black magic. “Venomous worm” doesn’t seem to cut it, so I’ve called it a “blackworm” instead.

This is 施蛊人 (shi gu ren) in Chinese, and a more literal translation is ‘Venomous Worm Commander’, but that sounds a bit dumb in English, so I’ve translated this as Venom Master instead.

  8. Oof. This is a nice misunderstanding to try to fix! Well, misunderstanding in terms of how things were phrased and why they were done. Despite what was said in front of this laughably titled Tiande Emperor, there is more than affection behind this deal. Dan Yi, you’ll have to start this conversation with a submissive tone to answer the many questions Qiqi has or you won’t ever have a happy roll in the sheets! This reader too wants you to feast, but alas, the meal is not served yet. Qiqi won’t take well to being thrown abruptly into a marriage- this frog will only not jump out with a slow boil method! Still, the observant eye can tell there’s a lot of hope here: look at the stirrings of jealousy over the gifted potential concubines!

    • There’s a saying in Chinese about how some people (usually the reference is to men) “only eat soft food and don’t eat hard food” (吃软不吃硬), meaning that you can only use indirect tactics and persuasion with that person instead of scolding that person directly. This Qiqi is totally the opposite imo. If Dan Yi didn’t use hard tactics on him, he’ll just walk all over Dan Yi! 😝
