LonelinessChapter 23

Mother Yuan carried many bags into the house, so many that the floor almost couldn’t be seen, and stumbled over the shoe cabinet.

Father Yuan quickly held her up and took the things from her hands, asking suspiciously, “Why did you buy so many things? All these things… biscuits? Drinks? You don’t normally buy these.” Wa1 Tx

Mother Yuan straightened and looked nervous. “I asked my colleague what preparations are needed when receiving a daughter-in-law. But I felt that our family’s situation was special and none of the suggestions were comprehensive enough. In the end, I took up all of them.”

Father Yuan: …

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

He still remembered the moment when Yuan Yuan had called and explained the situation. The expression on Mother Yuan’s face was so dark it was scary. She clutched her phone tightly and her arm was taut as if she was about to throw her phone the next moment. On the other end, Yuan Yuan said something and she slowly relaxed. But her tone was still hard, and in a seemingly reprimanding tone, she had expressed something along the lines of “you had better quickly bring your little boyfriend back home”.

But now, it seemed like she wanted to move the entire supermarket into their home. h7Wpsl

“Why aren’t they here yet?” Mother Yuan looked towards her watch and frowned.

Father Yuan looked at the time. “Should be soon. The flight was delayed. They should be here in another half hour.”

Mother Yuan’s frown deepened. “How would you know they’ll be late?”

Father Yuan laughed. “He said he didn’t dare to speak to you, afraid that you might feel disgusted breathing the air from the same city as them and shoo them away.”

IXvF8T

Mother Yuan’s face expressed displeasure. “Do I seem like such a person?”

Father Yuan silently disagreed: In fact, you’re really…

Twenty minutes later, Yuan Yuan arrived with Chen Dong Lan.

Mother Yuan opened the door and, in a glance, saw the tall and thin Chen Dong Lan beside her son. tz9WXl

Chen Dong Lan gave a ninety-degree bow and offered the gifts that were in his hands. “Hello, Auntie.”

Mother Yuan didn’t accept them, but Father Yuan did, cautiously complying with her instructions of “good cop bad cop“.

“Hello Uncle.” Chen Dong Lan continued greeting them.

“Hello, Xiao Chen right? Come in.” Father Yuan wore an amiable smile and invited them in. 1eCr5E

Among the four people, three of them were friendly and sat together on the sofa. Only Mother Yuan strove to maintain a cold expression, deliberately sitting very far away.

Seeing this, Yuan Yuan wanted to laugh. He asked Father Yuan, “Did you and Mom get off work early today? I thought we would need to wait for a while when we arrived home.”

Father Yuan said, “Not only did we reach home early, this afternoon, your mother specially…”

“Ahem…ahem ahem.” Mother Yuan unnaturally interrupted him. q6yJgc

Father Yuan adapted well and changed the subject. “Xiao Chen, were you and Yuan Yuan old classmates?”

“Yes, I was in A city during junior high…” Chen Dong Lan introduced himself in detail, from his name and age to his education history, then his work and income situation and even his health condition.

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

Father Yuan listened as he finished and nodded. He did not say a word and neither did Chen Dong Lan and Yuan Yuan. The three of them simultaneously shifted their gazes to Mother Yuan.

Mother Yuan felt goosebumps rise. “Why are you looking at me?” wuOYGM

Yuan Yuan couldn’t help it. “Mom, you’re the only one who hasn’t approved of us.”

Mother Yuan glared at Father Yuan, while Father Yuan gave her an innocent expression.

Mother Yuan sighed. “Yuan Yuan, you have given me a problem.”

Yuan Yuan pursed his lips. “Sorry to trouble you.” PRJ1ql

Chen Dong Lan felt guilty but restrained himself from lowering his head.

He had to be resolute, more so than anyone else.

Mother Yuan pondered for a while before speaking. “We have talked about Xiao Chen previously, and I know that he’s a good boy. You have decided to be together and have all along stressed to me that you’re serious. I believe that you love each other, and even if I forcefully separate you now, it would not work.”

Yuan Yuan was silent for a while. W0k7Hc

In fact, regardless of what his parents said, separation was not possible.

Mother Yuan clasped her hands together and twiddled her thumbs, which helped her to think. “I will not stress to you the difficulties of homosexuality. I only worry as to whether or not you will still have the same determination after a long time.”

As a mother, her fears were justified. Since Yuan Yuan was young, she respected his actions and decisions. She tried her best to let him face and resolve everything independently. This was due to her trust towards her son and her pride in him. But when the answer he gave was a huge deviation from what she thought was right, she would step in and stop it.

Mother Yuan looked at her son seriously.

He was always like this. When she wasn’t paying attention, a change would occur and it would take her by surprise. AU1X2P

“Let’s stop here first.” Mother Yuan said, “Let your father prepare dinner and we’ll chat about something lighter.”

Chen Dong Lan still held his breath but Yuan Yuan had already relaxed.

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

His parents were so good to him. Even when he came up and told them that he wanted to be with a man, they were not furious and put their son’s thoughts first.

They thought of ways to support him and encourage him. iUmcZK

When Chen Dong Lan heard the words “prepare dinner”, he reacted immediately. “Let me prepare dinner.”

Father Yuan laughed. “There is no such thing as letting the guest prepare dinner. You can remain seated.” He started fabricating a lie to ridicule his son. “Xiao Chen, let me tell you, you’re together with Yuan Yuan in a romantic relationship, not as his housekeeper. It’s best that you don’t prepare meals for him at home and spoil him until he becomes more finicky than when he was young.”

Yuan Yuan was helpless but didn’t refute. “Dad…”

Mother Yuan looked towards Chen Dong Lan. “He’s right. You don’t need to prepare dinner. Allowing a guest to prepare dinner is really a lack of etiquette.” sxF0Ph

Chen Dong Lan was standing and didn’t know if he should sit or continue to insist on preparing dinner.

Yuan Yuan patted him and said, “Dad, just let him help you with the preparations. It’s good for him to learn some cooking skills from you.”

Father Yuan knew that Yuan Yuan wanted to push Chen Dong Lan towards him since he was genial as well as to take on the cannon that Mother Yuan was firing himself, so he responded accordingly, “That will do as well. I will trouble Xiao Chen to help me out.”

Chen Dong Lan said hurriedly, “It’s no trouble.” ld8hyu

They walked to the kitchen and Mother Yuan gave Yuan Yuan an unrestrained eye roll.

Yuan Yuan couldn’t help but laugh. “Mom, today your acting as the bad guy isn’t bad.”

Mother Yuan didn’t acknowledge his words. “You sure know how to protect him. Am I that scary?”

Yuan Yuan quickly explained, “I didn’t mean that. I already told you over the phone. He overthinks easily and if I’m not careful, he’ll get hurt.” uDBlo

Hearing her son describing a man to be more fragile than a glass ball, Mother Yuan’s temper disappeared.

Mother Yuan was typically cold on the outside but warm on the inside. Although she was constantly expressing coldness the whole time Chen Dong Lan was here, seldom looking directly at Chen Dong Lan and mostly treating him like he wasn’t there, when they were leaving, Mother Yuan gave Chen Dong Lan countless things, causing them to leave with their hands full, looking like vendors who had just replenished their stocks.

The first thing Chen Dong Lan did after returning to T city was to write an email to Mother Chen.

After Mother Yuan asked him “How do your parents feel about the two of you?”, he suddenly realised that he had considered all aspects of being with Yuan Yuan and their future, but had not considered Mom, Uncle Xu and Xiao De’s opinions. Ki6hqf

He deliberated repeatedly over his words, using many discourse markers to soften the sentences as much as possible.

A day after the email was sent, he received a call from Mother Chen.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

The two of them greeted each other doubtfully, surprised by the strangeness of each other’s voices. Chen Dong Lan called out “Mom” but felt this syllable was very strange as if he had mispronounced this simplest Chinese character.

“Dong Lan, what you wrote in your email, are you joking with me?” RwyI6s

Chen Dong Lan gripped his phone tightly. “No. Every sentence I wrote is the truth.”

Mother Chen was silent for a while, but Chen Dong Lan could vaguely hear the sound of trembling airflow.

“Say it again.”

“What I wrote in the email is all true. I’m now together with a man and I love him very much.” Chen Dong Lan breathed deeply. z1E9WD

“You’re crazy!” Mother Chen roared. “Are you crazy? What’s the point of using this to lie to me? Do you know you can’t use this kind of thing as a joke…” In the end, Mother Chen’s voice became choked with emotion.

Chen Dong Lan was silent for a while.

This wasn’t a response that he had expected. He thought that Mother Chen would listen to his story as before, then put it at the back of her mind during her daily life.

“Mom…” He actually wanted to say “Please calm down”, but he had always felt that Mother Chen would never lose her cool over anything regarding him. So he corrected himself. “You can read my email again. I’m not joking in any part of it.” y5Kzj3

“Chen Dong Lan…do you know what you’re doing?” Mother Chen raised her voice.

Chen Dong Lan felt a headache. “How about this: I’ll call you another time.”

He didn’t wait for a reply and hung up.

Mother Chen called back immediately but Chen Dong Lan put his phone on silent mode and ignored it. w0VBdt

Mother Chen bombarded his phone for two days. Every day, there would be at least ten calls. Some times, Chen Dong Lan would answer. Other times, he would ignore it. But when he answered, there would be no difference in Mother Chen’s response, repeatedly scolding him about being crazy and if he knew what he was doing.

During the last call of these two days, Mother Chen’s trembling voice asked Chen Dong Lan, “Do you not consider yourself to be my son?”

Chen Dong Lan denied it repeatedly. “No such thing.”

But Mother Chen hung up the phone after a short silence. 4z6dEY

Following that, she didn’t call again.

After that incident, Chen Dong Lan stopping paying attention to this matter and gradually forgot about it until he suddenly received a call from a strange number.

It was Uncle Xu.

At that moment, it was afternoon and there was still some time away from clocking out. Hearing Uncle Xu’s voice, Chen Dong Lan stood up from his chair immediately. dCw9MX

“Dong Lan? I’m sorry I didn’t give you prior notice before coming to see you. I’m now in a taxi and will reach your office in a short while. Let’s talk.”

Chen Dong Lan didn’t say anything for a long time. He looked around and found his team leader, then said, “Why did you…this is too sudden. I’ll take leave immediately to meet you.”

“Sorry to bother you. Is it alright to take leave? I really can’t adjust my timing. I need to fly back this evening.”

“It’s okay…it’s really okay. Uncle Xu, let me know where you will be alighting. I’ll rush over.” K9hnes

After hanging up the phone, Chen Dong Lan hurriedly applied for leave from his leader. He didn’t have time to pack his things, just grabbing his phone and wallet before running out.

With an uneasy feeling, he waited for Uncle Xu at a coffee place near his office.

Uncle Xu paid great attention to his appearance and wore a grey English-styled coat. With some stubble left on his chin, he was a middle-aged man who was still elegant.

Chen Dong Lan had earlier ran over in a rush and his forehead was perspiring. “Uncle Xu, when you come over, you need to let me know in advance. I haven’t prepared anything right now.” KElFiL

Uncle Xu laughed and waved his hand. “There is no need for that. I don’t have much time. Let’s quickly sit down to chat.”

“Okay, okay.” Chen Dong Lan pulled open the door of the coffee place and let Uncle Xu enter first.

The two of them sat across from each other. Chen Dong Lan was still perspiring non-stop.

“Dong Lan, it was your mother who told me to come.” Uncle Xu went straight to the point. UmguWM

“I guessed as much.” Chen Dong Lan nodded.

Uncle Xu looked at him with a complex expression. “You might not have guessed it, but these few days, your mother has been crying at home every day.”

Chen Dong Lan was genuinely shocked. He had thought that his mother would curse and even throw something in anger, but he never thought that she would weep for a few days. “Why would she…”

“I spoke to her, but she couldn’t stop crying. I actually wanted to come over to look for you immediately, but I waited for two more days until I pacified her before coming over.” Uncle Xu said, “Maybe since when you were young, you’ve felt that your mother wasn’t good to you, that she wasn’t caring enough and only knew how to care for Xiao De. I have no choice but to admit that your mother was indeed this way, but do you know why?” qVRmb

Chen Dong Lan lowered his eyes. “I don’t know.”

He also didn’t really want to know.

Please visit chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

Uncle Xu’s tone was gentle. “It’s because your mother doesn’t know how to be good to you and doesn’t know how to face you. This might seem ridiculous and unconvincing but she really felt this way. She wanted to be good to you but felt that she was the one who placed you in these awkward circumstances. She felt guilty towards you but couldn’t compensate for it. Gradually, she didn’t know how to face you.”

Chen Dong Lan felt that what Uncle Xu said was indeed ridiculous. pqdXRn

“She didn’t know how to face it?” This was really a good excuse.

But there was not much of a fluctuation in Chen Dong Lan’s heart. He had long decided not to brood over the past.

“How could…” Chen Dong Lan shook his head. “Mom is just angry with me.”

Uncle Xu sighed deeply. “I hope that you can put yourself in your mother’s shoes. That year, when she remarried, she was looking after you alone and was only twenty-odd years in age. She couldn’t even look after herself well but had to look after a child that was dependent on her for everything. At that time, you had not weaned and always cried at night…” 7mBvUd

Uncle Xu’s words had set off Chen Dong Lan’s memories. When he was very young, before Xiao De had learned to speak, Chen Dong Lan had a very profound image in his memory and it was that of Mother Chen.

She stood far away at the doorway, not saying a word and not coming in. She had both arms wrapped around herself and was quietly watching Chen Dong Lan playing alone in the room.

Chen Dong Lan turned his head to look at her and called “Mama”. Mother Chen didn’t respond. Her eyes were dry and heavy as if she had shed all the tears that she should or shouldn’t have shed.

Uncle Xu closed his eyes for a few seconds to calm down, then continued saying, “Dong Lan, we have let you down in the past. But I hope that you wouldn’t blame your mother. Your mother feels that you…liking a man is all her fault. It was because she neglected you from a young age and didn’t supervise you that you walked up this crooked path. Dong Lan, tell Uncle Xu honestly, did you do such an extreme thing because you wanted to retaliate against your mother?” oKbvNs

At this moment, Chen Dong Lan’s heart ached dully.

He didn’t think that Mother Chen would actually feel this way.

In fact, he had understood from a young age that the distant relationship between him and his mother could not be blamed entirely on her. Who gave up on this mother-child relationship was not just one person, but two. These twenty-odd years were because his attitude was so passive, not striving for anything nor making any effort or resisting.

But Yuan Yuan… aFDidm

“No, this is definitely not Mom’s fault.”

Chen Dong Lan’s voice was firm.

Falling in love with Yuan Yuan and being together with Yuan Yuan was definitely not anyone’s fault.

In his entire life, this was the most right thing he’s ever done. lbi0fR

“You don’t have to worry. The matters from my childhood, I have long relieved myself of them.” Chen Dong Lan laughed, unprecedentedly relaxed. “I’m now with the person I love and will definitely not regret it.”

Uncle Xu gazed at him and didn’t speak for a long time.

Please visit chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

It was long enough that the coffee that had been served became cold. Uncle Xu said emotionally, “You have grown up.”

Chen Dong Lan’s eyes started to sting. “Thank you.” u5MVId

Uncle Xu laughed helplessly. “When you have time, go and see your mother.”

Chen Dong Lan nodded. “Okay.”

Uncle Xu’s return flight schedule was very tight. They didn’t chat further, and Chen Dong Lan sent him to the airport. When they were saying their goodbyes, Uncle Xu held his hand and repeatedly invited him to bring Yuan Yuan to see Mother Chen. Chen Dong Lan had also agreed repeatedly.

While walking out of the airport, Chen Dong Lan took out his phone to check the time and found there were a few missed calls from Yuan Yuan. pvKl73

He called back, and before the third ring, Yuan Yuan picked up the call. “Where are you? Why didn’t you pick up the phone?”

He had finished work and returned home to discover that Chen Dong Lan wasn’t there. He called but there was no answer and was worriedly pacing around in the hall.

“Sorry…maybe I didn’t hear the ringing.” The situation was emotional earlier during their goodbyes so he had been unable to pay attention to his phone. “I’m now at the airport and heading off now.”

“Why did you go to the airport?” 6NqAyF

“I’ll explain to you when I get back. It’ll be unclear if I say it now.”

“Then I’ll go and fetch you.”

“Okay.”

Chen Dong Lan didn’t move from his position and waited. kfPzbN

At this time, all the lights were on. The spring evening wasn’t cold, and the heat of the day had not yet completely faded. The wind was warm and gentle.

He had only waited for a while before Yuan Yuan arrived.

Yuan Yuan ran towards Chen Dong Lan, the wind blowing up the hem of his coat like spring buds being dispersed from a tree.

Chen Dong Lan also ran towards him. 6d2KP8

Until now, the feeling of solitude had hovered over most of his life.

Being alone was the way of life he had gotten used to, and it even became his way of thinking.

  1. So sad it will end! But it was such a good one! The story and YY and CDL! 💞💞

Thank you so much for bringing this novel to us!

  2. NOOOOOOOOOO! ALL THIS FUCKING BUILD UP AND THE REPRESSED CHILDHOOD EMOTIONS TO GET A FLIMSY EXCUSE LIKE THAT?? AND IT’S SETTLED?? THE FUCK?!?!

  3. It’s the end?

Had to say I hate Chen Dong Lan’s parents – he’s been neglected his whole life and what – he was supposed to understand that sorry excuse of a parent? And was suspected to lie just to retaliate against her? And of course, his mom need to send her husband instead of meeting him herself because maybe…she still didn’t know how to face her own son.

P/s: I’m being biased here but I really don’t mind if it’s Yuan’s parents who against the couple because in their case, I sure it was done because they genuinely concerned about their own son.

    Thanks for the chapter!

  4. Seriously? I don’t like the parents at all and that not knowing how to face him is a pathetic excuse to neglect someone. I kinda wished cdl would’ve said ‘none of your business ‘. Sigh….

Thank you so much for translating this novel♥️♥️♥️ we are really grateful.

  5. If I had that kind of mother I would pretend like she is dead. I don’t care about her excuses. That’s not how you treat a child who done nothing towards you. I am disgusted. And that uncle has no right to ask forgiveness on his wife’s behalf. Chen Dong Lin is too kind. I am glad he has Yuan Yuan.

  6. Even If Chen Dong Lan forgives his mom, I can’t. What a pathetic excuse was that? She didn’t know how to face it? But it was her responsability to do take good care of that Child! And she can’t even face his own son this time, ugh. Hateful.

But I’m glad he can be part of Yuan Yuan’s family. This man won’t let him down.

What a sweet story. Thanks so much for it!

  7. Wow.

So many angry comments about his mother.

As someone who is also awkward, I can assure you that sometimes things like this can happen.

I myself have almost a similar situation with Chen Dong Lan during my college year living with my aunt.

It took us six years to finally understand each other and even then we have our own comfortable distance between us.

The only fault in his mother is that she hadn’t had the courage to step up and do her job as a mother.

But I can sympathize with her and can only imagine that she had little courage, just like Chen Dong Lan too.

    It’s been years, I know.

But people character’s can’t change that easily.

Anyways, I’m glad Uncle Xu is more understanding than she is, so he’s more respectful and accepting.

    Phew.

    What a journey.

Thank you so much for the translation all this time.

This story is definitely will have a special spot in my heart.

Ah, so sad that this is ending…

      • True.

Like I said, that’s why I can sympathize a little with his mother.

Her only fault was because she doesn’t make any effort in trying to get along with Chen Dong Lan.

But, seeing how timid she and CDL are, I guess that’s just their characteristics?

I’m not a psychologist, so I’m no expert.

That’s just how I see it.

Let’s just agree to disagree, shall we?

        • No excuses! No matter what, he’s her son! Not some demon spawn!

And she’s his mother! God, it’s disgusting to even think about neglecting your own son! And it’s not like she couldn’t do a good job being a mother! She was a mother just fine for her younger son! If it was just one son, then i can somewhat understand. But she had two sons!!!

One -she neglected. The other? She showered with affection! Comparisons are odious! It’s just CDL that she neglected.

And in your situation, she’s your aunt. A kid should never be neglected by either his/her parent/guardian. They are called that i.e. “guardian” for a reason.

And saying you don’t know how to face him- her own son? What did she kill his father? Did she commit mass murder? She’s a drug addict? These reasons i could understand for not wanting to face your son. But the excuses she gave was so lame and sooo- god!!! it’s like she doesn’t even care what kind of excuse she gives him as long as she could give a reasonable excuse for why she did what she did!

But no excuse she gives makes neglecting her son okay in any way, whatsoever!

        • This is four years later and without the app’s notifications, you might never read this but given your response, sounds like you also have been in some sort of tight spot. I hope you’re in a better situation by now.

  8. It’s nice to see that YY’s family has accepted CDL. Thanks for translating!

  9. Thank you so much. This was such a cute story!

  10. His relationship with his parents does happen in real life. Not knowing how to act towards someone being estranged and it becomes the norm. But still, the way it was handled like that was not satisfying. I mean, his mother could’ve at least faced her son herself rather than sending her husband to do the communicating. And the way they thought that he’s only being in a relationship to retaliate them? Like, seriously….If you really think you’ve done him dirty then at least make an effort to make up for your incompetence rather than run around like headless chickens.

  11. What offended me was not that his mother still didn’t know how to face him (because honestly emotions are often touchy subjects in Asian families) but that she immediately assumed that he was dating a man in order to retaliate against her. It’s really a clear sign that she doesn’t know anything about her son and that she has never tried to understand. You don’t have to face someone in order to observe their daily behavior and habits. In the nicest way possible, CDL is a simple-minded doormat. I was surprised that he admitted to himself that he was once angry about the way he was treated. Such a person could almost never do something so aggressive as “retaliate.” Like mother, like son, CDL’s tactic is avoidance.

I’m also a little baffled that Uncle Xu was relieved that CDL had long let it go. In one way of speaking, CDL has become an independent adult. In another way of speaking, he no longer has any expectations of his mother so why would he be upset when she doesn’t meet expectations? Perhaps this means that they could start anew and build a different relationship together. But I doubt it, given their personalities and priorities.

  12. Argh. No matter how many times I read this story, that flimsy excuse of “She didn’t know how to be your mother” always pisses me off. No matter how awkward, how introverted, how quiet a person is, you cant deny that his little brother got all the attention that CDL lacked. They are 3 years apart, give or take. How did she not know how to be his mother but Xiao De got to experience the love, care, thoughtfulness, compassion, etc of not one parent but 2?! And then to be like “Are you gay because I didn’t give you enough attention?” McScuse me?!

Anyway, I’m glad Yuan Yuan’s parents are supportive and accepting of their son.

  13. Mother Chen’s excuse was so petty and indeed ridiculous….

she doesn’t know how to face him so she neglected him for years?

instead of patching the wound, she left it there to rot? that’s just plain bad parenting. She and her new family flew to another place, leaving CDL all alone, and she thinks that the worst that can happen to CDL—is turning into a homosexual? How shallow. She doesn’t even dare go by herself to find his son. CDL is truly too soft. It wasn’t his fault if he closed off himself to everybody, he was made to do it. A parent starting a new family in the face of their child, it’s inevitable that the child would be sensitive and feel threatened. So when his mother shifted her attention to her new son, and even shirked off her responsibilities to his other son as soon as she could, no wonder CDL completely shut himself off. No matter how you look at it, the fault lies at the parent.

It’s just good CDL didn’t hold grudges. He had already too much that he keeps to himself, it’s just right that he doesn’t burden himself more with things that aren’t worth it. His character was indeed portrayed really well here.

    • Right?! And lets not even count how many times consciously and unconsciously she made CDL sacrifice something for her beloved son. Fck her then and fck her excuses.

  14. If I had that kind of parents, I would pretend like I never knew them (I hold grudges, lol). CDL was so kind to forgive them especially his mother even without her asking for forgiveness, his uncle was no better either. They neglected him for so many years then ask for forgiveness and understanding as if it was nothing. Hmph. What bad parenting.

  15. just like all the other comments i also kinda think it was a pathetic excuse yknow,, xiao de and cdl don’t have that much of an age gap but how come they were treated so differently? but then again, im not cdl’s mother so i wouldn’t know her experiences but looking at it in cdl’s view with my personal opinions,, that was pathetic af

  16. aaahhh i’m glad that they got a closure ah QAQ and so happy that CDL is now not alonee~ thank u for the chapter!!

  17. I know this isn’t going to happen in this story but, I think CDL needs therapy. It sounds like he experienced quite a bit of neglect and potentially emotional abuse. He obviously has self-esteem issues and is very withdrawn with YY being pretty much his only purpose in life. I’d really like him to see an objective 3rd party (therapist) to talk to.

    • Honestly, I agree. Therapy isn’t very common in novels (I believe it also isn’t something that big in China either but is becoming more common as more people learn about mental illnesses), but even if cdl isn’t actively hurting himself or anything, he’s been through a lot of stuff mentally, and it shows. Props to the people around him that love and accept him, but stuff and self esteem issues and anxiety tend to stick around for he rest of your life, and I do wish he learned how to cope and manage it in a healthier way.

  18. OMG, what a beautiful story! I don’t want to say good bye to my boys!!! I love them so much! YY, you’ve come so far! CDL, I love you with all my heart. If he ever screws this up, I will kill him! <3

  19. This short novel had me reeling, the heartbreak, the anguish, the fluff, the heat… This is a winner for me. The translators and editors have done an amazing job with this TL. I loved the side comments by the translators… totally totally enjoyed this one. So happy that CDL found his happy ending and that YY proved himself and showed his genuineness and firm resolution to be with CDL… Loved it. 5/5 rating.

  20. Bad upbringing + careless parenting=child gay?

    LGBTQ+ Powerpuff kids ftw I guess 🚹🚹🚹

  21. I had hoped to see a chapter about Chen Dong Lan having discussions with his mothers and stepfather in regards to his childhood, neglect, reasons from his mother, his feelings (and her feelings), the burden Dong Lan has felt like to them, and whether to forgive or not, etc.

    I was disappointed.

  22. NAAH fuck CDL’s parents. That’s some bullshit right there. They don’t deserve to even meet YY. Now the brother? He can’t help how the parents treated him and might be better about meeting YY and be more open minded. But again, fuck CDL’S parents!!!

I’m so happy CDL and YY have found happiness within each other. This was such an angsty read but worth it. Neither of them will be lonely anymore. 🤧

  23. Man fck that mother……fcker! She and her husband failed CDL. Give me a f*caking break with that weak excuse! Upsetting me in the new year!

  24. there’s a diffrent between, neglecting & difficult to face someone. CDL mother neglected him, she really doesn’t cared about him . if she really cared about him but find it difficult to face him straight she has many ways to show her caring to him in a roundabout way .

  25. She could get a man for herself, got married, had another son and didn’t know how to face and treat his first son kindly? Hah! What a joke! She just didn’t want to care about him because he reminded her of her misery.

  26. I have to pause reading the chapter for a bit to complain. I REALLY hate it when they talk about homosexual relationships and they go like, “Oh I hope you two still have the same determination later in life.”

So, in this sense, it’s somehow guaranteed for heterosexual relationships to keep going forever? For the couple to maintain the ‘determination’ for their whole life? This assumption irritates me so much. It’s human nature for one to change. It has nothing to do with sexuality. I hate how this is only discussed for certain relationships. You can’t guarantee any relationship to last forever! That’s just plain stupid.

    Thank you for the chapter.

  27. Boo hoo… the poor mother…. I want to punch her. She felt like she didn’t know how to treat her son so she abandoned him? Why didn’t she cry when he was only eating biscuits? Or when he felt lonely as sh*t and could only numb himself? Or when he felt he needed to make his presence invisible to not bother him? Why didn’t she call him more than twice a year? And those weren’t even calls.
