It's a Wonderful LifeChapter 6.5

They died. Of course they did. Ira was very good at killing things. Spinning the crowbar in his hands, he gleefully attacked the monsters. It was a welcome exercise.

As it was a small cargo hold there was not nearly enough room for the monsters to escape his reach. Ira danced through the blood and guts that rained in his footsteps, the air filled with the sound of vicious growling. The scent of blood soon filled the air, cloying in its intensity. Ira didn’t let up his attack until every last one of them was dead. Tl2Iiu

He went all out.

By the end of it, Ira was once more drenched in blood. Stopping for the first time in 15 minutes, Ira breathed heavily and waited for his body’s state to return to normal. He turned around and faced the chaos that he had caused.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

The room was a complete mess. Blood filled every crevice of it, torn off limbs and bashed in skulls littering the ground. Ira licked his lips and was met with the taste of blood. He let go of the crowbar and it clattered loudly to the floor. Walking over to the nearest crate, Ira jumped up and sat himself down on it. After a second of hesitation, he laid down and stared up at the ceiling in silence. His heart was still racing. He wasn’t sure why, it wasn’t like he hadn’t done this before. Ira had very vivid memories of killing things.

In his silence, the sound of his breath was loud. It felt like it had taken no time at all, killing all those monsters. It was kind of boring when he thought about it. He’d assumed it would be more of a challenge, considering what the first monster he faced had almost succeeded in doing, but it wasn’t very difficult at all, killing them. They died pretty quickly. wJKSxF

He only had to bash their heads in like 3 times before they croaked.

Closing his eyes, Ira focused on the sound of his own breathing. In his mind, he could clearly see himself killing the monsters. He had been recording everything. As was his habit.

There were still plenty of monsters left on the ship. Ira had killed four of them, but it was not nearly all of them. The number of monsters who had snuck onto the ship, and was for that matter surrounding it, was staggering. But then, there wasn’t a lot of food on this planet. Which made him wonder, were the monsters eating the corpses of the dead crew members?

It was the work or second to zoom in on the nearest dead body and investigate what was going on. Ira’s physical eyes were closed as he came across the view of the monsters eating a corpse.

Gross.

Shuddering in disgust, Ira zoomed out immediately. He did not want to see that. It was bad enough that he had experienced it a couple of times because of ungrateful Hosts; he did not need to see it again.

There should have been a trigger warning. Opening his eyes, Ira was once again met with the sight of the ceiling. It was made of metal like the rest of the ship and was a slate grey color. He didn’t have anything against the color and just sort of let his eyes drift over it as he thought. His mind wandered through the possibilities. There were human-eating monsters on the ship. They had easily gotten aboard the ship through the damaged areas. And right now, they were crawling through it like cockroaches. Very, very big cockroaches.

Ira sighed deeply and regretted all of his life choices. He sat up and looked out at the room. The monsters were still dead and he had killed them. Grinning as a thought, he jumped down from the crate and almost slipped to death in the blood. “Holy shit!” Ira exclaimed. He flailed his arms in the air as he desperately tried to keep his balance. He slid almost 2 decimeters forward before he finally stopped.

He should probably report what happened to the Captain. Maybe he would even get a bonus for managing to kill those things? Ira sped up at that thought. Nk2JQE

It didn’t take long at all to retrace his steps and find his way back to the cargo hold that had apparently become their headquarters. Ira barged in without looking ahead, the doors slamming into the wall behind him. Weren’t they sliding doors the last time he used them? He looked around and noticed that there were another pair of doors on the other side. So apparently, he hadn’t retraced his steps perfectly.

Walking up to the Captain who was standing in front of a crate, writing something furiously on it, Ira cleared his throat loudly. He waited for the Captain to notice him. When the man didn’t show any intention of looking at him, Ira knocked on the crate. The Captain finally looked up.

“What do you–” he started to say before he caught sight of Ira and interrupted himself. “Wha–?!” He looked rattled, and Ira tilted his head as he attempted to follow the man’s train of thought. The man looked him over and demanded, “What the hell happened to you?”

“There are more monsters in the ship,” Ira decided not to waste any time. “I killed four of them.” B6tT0V

The man blinked at him and didn’t say anything. Ira waited to see what the man would do. Eventually, the man stepped back and seemed to realize what Ira was telling him. “How many more?” Captain demanded to know. At least his priorities were in order.

“At least 30,” answered Ira.

“Shit!”

The captain turned back to the crate put his hands on it and leaned over it, breathing deeply. “Damn it.” The Captain seemed deeply disturbed. 6aF30l

Ira waited for another moment but nothing seemed to be happening, so he said, “I’m gonna go shower now.”

Captain didn’t react.

Having to shower for the second time in less than two hours wasn’t very fun, especially not when the shower stall was so small that he could barely move in it. But the blood had already started drying and he didn’t intend for his first shower to have been a waste.

And it didn’t have to be all bad. He could rig the shower to bypass the restrictions and get some warm water. That would be nice. Showering in warm water was very pleasant when he could feel such things. Nodding to himself, Ira left the cargo hold again. wzGdcu

He stalked back to his room and dropped his bathrobe on the floor before he stepped into the shower. Contorting himself so that he didn’t hit the small shelf on the wall in the corner, he spent some time tinkering with the shower system until warm water sprinkled out. Sighing in pleasure, he stood under it and leaned his head back, basking in the sensation. He was vaguely aware that Silas had reached the ship, but he was having so much fun that he ignored it.

He soaped himself down at least four times before he finally left the shower. Despite his tinkering, the warm water wasn’t infinite and it eventually cooled down. And with his ability to sense temperature restored it wasn’t very fun. Ira looked at the empty bathroom and exited it. He picked up the towel that he had dropped on the bed earlier and started drying himself. The towel got redder. The bathrobe laid by his feet on the floor, so red that he doubted it had ever been any other color. He carefully dried his hair one piece at a time and held it out in front of his face to look at. The color was a pale blonde, as were most of the other people’s hair on this ship. When he held it closer to his eyes he could see that the ends were frayed; the original owner of this body hadn’t gotten it cut as often as he should have.

When he was done with his hair, he finished drying the rest of his body and dropped the towel in the laundry basket. Then he went to the small drawer below the bed and pulled it open. He saw a few items of clothing in there and grabbed the first pair of underwear he found. That done, he didn’t bother with the rest of it and got in bed.

Ira spent the next 12 hours sleeping soundly. His rest was easy and without dreams. When he woke up, he did so feeling well-rested and relaxed. Ira yawned and slowly opened his eyes, already knowing what he would see. pSRs0m

And he was right.

Silas was here. Ira was lying on his side on the bed, his head facing the door. When he opened his eyes he was immediately faced with a pair of large, inhuman eyes. They stared at him unblinkingly.

Yawning again, Ira slowly pushed himself up a little on his arms and peered over the edge of the bed at Silas. Silas was sitting hunched on the floor by the head of the bed. His body was all sleek muscle and covered in thin shock-absorbent clothing. It was armor made of high technology. An alien, Silas was bipedal with his eyes facing the front and too large ears pointing up. His skin was a bark-like texture and colored dark red. Yellow eyes stared straight at Ira, following his every move.

A pair of swords were sheathed on Silas’ back. When Ira sat up, Silas tilted his head back to keep staring into Ira’s eyes. Shrugging, Ira asked, “What?” VdPmpi

Silas rose smoothly to his feet. Standing up, he towered over Ira. He had to be over 2 meters tall. Ira leaned back on his hands and looked quizzically at Silas. He waited for the man to do something. Opening his mouth, Silas spoke.

Ira didn’t understand a word.

When he came to a new world, Ira automatically downloaded and installed the languages that his original body knew. This was so that he would not arouse suspicion from anyone who knew the original, and be able to interact with the world and his Host — they would seamlessly start speaking a new language without being able to tell the difference. So Ira could understand everyone aboard this ship but he hadn’t downloaded the language that Silas spoke.

Shaking his head, Ira said, “I don’t understand you.” K3z8Jf

Silas said something else. Ira simply shook his head and then said nothing. After a moment, Silas growled something else out and pointed at Ira. His tone sounded frustrated but Ira really couldn’t decipher why.

So he just shrugged again.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Then Silas pulled out a tiny box from one of the pockets of his belt and held it out to Ira. The box was tiny, barely 2 centimeters in diameter and Ira picked it up with a raised eyebrow. In his hands, it spilled out and he was abruptly holding a cloth of some kind. Holding it up in front of him, he shook it out and watched the shimmering light blue fabric. If he wasn’t mistaken, this was also nanotechnology. It would automatically repair if it broke.

Silas took the cloth from him without saying anything and pulled it over Ira’s head. Then he shoved Ira’s arms through the sleeves and pulled the fabric down over his body. Ira stood up and watched as the fabric fell all the way down to his ankles. It felt fine and airy but it wasn’t see-through in the least. Humming in thought, he shot Silas a questioning look. rg4NqF

Silas was staring at him. His yellow eyes glared at Ira and his arms were crossed over his chest. He looked pretty similar to humans actually. The statistics of that were astronomical. Well, Ira’s job didn’t involve math.

His stomach growled and reminded Ira that he needed to eat. Picking up his utility belt from the floor he pulled it around his waist and buckled it up. Then he left to find his own food, Silas following close behind.
