Caius’ feet couldn’t touch the floor. His light-blue linen shorts stopped just above his unblemished kneecaps and the theme continued to his small, pale legs. They swayed. His hands fixed either side of his petit frame, blue fingertips poking over the edge of the plump seat and holding on with unbridled anticipation.

The interior of the private transporter was designed with comfort in mind, with a possible nod towards more adult activities. It was undeniably sumptuous and a commodity treated with the utmost care and attention. But the seductive tone of the interior that went hand-in-hand with its owner, was lost against the vibrancy of the splashes of colour that came from the treats displayed on the table.

All of which happened to be Caius’ favourites, which proved to be just as tempting as the gifts that were eagerly awaiting his attention. It was clear to see what they were: a compact sketchbook with a see-through tin to one side that housed the sharpened, unused pencils. Caius found his stomach was confused, as it grumbled for the sweets while he was ogling the drawing material.

vG0eBj

His attention was torn between staring out of the large windows as they left #OWS4 and reaping what was on offer inside of the transporter. But as his fingers twitched, tentatively reaching out, he caught sight of the stipulation.

On the other side of the table, looking extremely relaxed, was Ace Kohner. His dark eyes that almost matched his obsidian-coloured hair, appeared content in watching him. It was only their third time meeting each other, and Caius was still unsure who the unusual man was. The confidence he expressed carried traits of an Omega, but there was far more to it than that.

As he effectively became a recluse in his old life, Caius couldn’t even begin to try and figure out who the man was and why his Papa had appeared so adamant to have him around. All he did know was that his preference for his own space and scepticism of unfamiliar faces, were two facts that Ace Kohner had picked up on uncommonly quick.

Caius struggled with people. He found it difficult to make snap-judgements based on people’s personalities. Instead he found it much easier to conclude based on their blatant actions towards him. Which is what often left him with a conundrum. He had a heightened awareness of his weaknesses, especially now that he was miraculously given the opportunity to prevent himself and his Papa from falling down the same holes. pv0Sb3

But whatever it was that made him different, whatever it was that lulled to sleep the part of his brain that made a normal person sense when something was wrong, was always going to be there. There were simply times when he momentarily forgot that he should be aware of his weak-points.

Which is why his Papa’s presence was far more to him than just a warm embrace.

And why Caius, in a state of hyper-alertness, felt irrevocably stranded by indecision when faced with someone like Ace Kohner and his bag of treats.

“I don’t know if your father told you, but I’m a lover of all things art.” Mr. Kohner said as he reached behind him to one of the long-seats, where he had deposited his bag. He brought out a physical book that Caius remarked to himself looked just as aged as the ones in his Papa’s library. ns2DfA

The striking difference between them was while his Papa’s were meticulously cared for, stored under an appropriate temperature, Mr. Kohner’s book was messy. Brush-strokes of varying colours haphazardly covered the front and back, with the once neat, white pages warped under the weight of the material Caius had obsessively read about in his past life as being called acrylic paints.

The paints he had once used were far from the quality of the ones used in Mr. Kohner’s sketchbook. When he once looked into buying the acrylics, he was left sullen for days when he saw how expensive they were. Since they weren’t being produced on the same scale as they once had been in the age of antiquity, they were a rarity and something people with Mr. Kohner’s wealth could quickly snatch up.

All the forced awareness in the planetary-system wouldn’t have been enough to keep Caius from reaching across and gently taking ahold of the book. The first thing he did was smell it; the faint traces of chemicals still remaining. It took him back to his solitary life, which was both sad but made so much better when he woke up everyday to an undisturbed view that always captured his attention.

Caius savoured the sound of the creaking of the spine as he opened the book, even the sound the old page made as it came away from the cover proved to add to his initial excitement. The first thing he thought when he saw the graphite lines was that Mr. Kohner had been angry when he had made the sketch. But the closer he looked, the less he believed that theory. As the longer he looked, the clearer the intention became. ibdWmu

It was a woman dancing. Instead of a sole figure in a fixed position, Mr. Kohner made it appear like she was dancing all around the page whilst always linking back to the starting-point. It was fascinating, and beyond what Caius thought possible with a pencil.

“When people look at my work, they always flick through until they come to my least favourite pieces, the most colourful ones.” Mr. Kohner now rested his elbow on the table, his head in the palm of his hand as he smiled. “And yet, little star, you are transfixed on the first page.”

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

Caius didn’t hear him, looking upon the pages like they were some sacred text. Only when he had just about absorbed the full workings of the graphite drawing did he go to turn the page and abruptly paused. He quickly retracted his hands, but before he could retreat too far, Mr. Kohner held out one of his hands with the palm upwards.

Slender, with a prominent wrist bone. Definitely didn’t look like they had seen any blue pencils recently like Caius’ own had. 52dQnt

Surprising even himself, Caius still tentatively reached out and as soon as his little fingertips were within reach, Mr. Kohner manoeuvred them so his hand faced upwards and his shame was revealed. Caius had almost dirtied the page, which was completely unforgivable.

Mr. Kohner shook his head, “That book is full of sketches that only resulted the way they did due to an accidental splash of paint here and there. But more than anything, those pages are filled with grubby fingerprints and smudges belonging to the side of my hand. You shouldn’t be scared of making a mess, little star. That’s how we get to express ourselves and learn.” After he had finished talking, he reached once again to his bag and grabbed an item.

“But here’s some quick advice, I’m going to assume your father didn’t see your fingertips before you left the planet, because those smudges certainly wouldn’t compliment the long-sleeved, silk shirt you’ve got on there. Before you wear anything as nice as what you’re wearing, wash your hands. Someone as well-dressed as your father will have a heart-attack if he saw them.” Mr. Kohner then began to clean Caius’ fingers.

More than once, Caius had forgotten to wash the residue off his hands and more than once his papa had shaken his head and marched him to the nearest sink to get cleaned-up. But even after putting on the clothes his papa had especially laid out for him on the bed that morning, Caius had resumed one of his most recent artworks. Even in his previous life, Caius found it almost impossible to walk away from his unfinished work. S yqnA

But in the rush of leaving their home, Caius had managed to hide his blue fingertips under the long sleeves of his button-up shirt that tucked smartly into a pair of linen shorts.

“Blaagh,” he spat out his tongue, “Just call me Ace.” He instructed as he moved onto the last of Caius’ fingers.

“Ok.. um, how did you become an artist?”

“Well, I started off just like you have done by declaring my passion for art.” Ace revealed as he finished-up cleaning Caius’ hands and deposited the tissues in the bin. Once done, he fetched one of the treats from the table and popped it in his mouth before offering one to the boy who was eagerly awaiting his answer.

This time, Caius didn’t refuse.  oOdEJ8

“I don’t want to spoil too much, because where we’re actually going is where I was born. It’s also where I was inspired, and I’m sure you will enjoy this special place of mine just as much as I do.”

Caius instinctively looked out of the window, hoping to catch a glimmer of an idea as to where they were heading. What he could rule out, was Nova. When he had travelled there via transporter to his old school, it took little to no time and the glowing planet was surrounded by an ever-rotating golden barrier. It was like a dwarf sun.

Out of the window on the opposite side of Ace’s transporter, Nova was visible. But slowly but surely it grew more and more distant. In the night sky of #OWS4, the planet Caius had once described as the golden sphere on the first instance he had ever looked up and seen it, was invariably visible. They were always within range and no matter how far him and his papa were, Nova always looked so immense.

Now Caius got to watch as it grew diminutive and inconsequential. wcYIKS

He savoured the uninterrupted signs of life all around him, other transporters travelling at inconceivable speeds, tending to migrate towards the golden sphere yet stopping in a flurry of lights as they began the process of battling security.

“Do you know which planet that one is?” Ace wondered, having followed Caius as he unknowingly moved to the opulently designed sofa that took up one whole side of the transporter, boasting an uninterrupted view as they travelled.

Caius followed where the man was pointing, and at first glance it almost blended into Nova’s grandeur. But the familiarity hit him harder than he had expected, he moved his gaze back to the distant stars as he responded, “Off-world settlement one. Where Omegas go to Cora.”

“Not all of us.” 8nVdca

Caius peeped a look at the man who looked far from saddened at the knowledge. He tilted his head when he felt the unrelenting stare and offered a cheeky wink.

“Why not? Why are some Omegas chosen and others not?”

Ace wasn’t expecting the question, and he hummed in comprehension before setting his gaze on the ends of Caius’ white hair which had been tied back with a ribbon. He seemed unable to stop himself as he reached across and gently threaded his fingers through the soft ends, all while maintaining a smile that even shocked Caius with its beauty.

“You’re still young enough to be happily ignorant, little star, but I suppose there’s no harm in telling you some things since you have already been far more courageous than most by determining your own future.” Caius blinked. Ace laughed. hzspAU

“Well the truth is, a vast majority of us have our fates decided for us even before we’re born. There’s even some of us whose whole existence is predetermined.”

Caius scrunched up his face as Ace’s fingers accidentally brushed his neck and it tickled him.

“By who?”

Instead of answering that potentially treasonous question, Ace moved his hand from caressing Caius’ hair to brushing against the boy’s cheek. He ever so gently took hold of his chin and turned his head towards the window, facing directly towards the diminishing gold flare in the distance. h3OX6n

Caius understood and wanted to ask more questions, like how Ace had become who he was. But a new voice filled the space, an automated message that kindly instructed them to retake their seats by the table and to fasten their harnesses for landing.

All previous discussion was forgotten as Caius got to peer out of the window from where he was seated. His eyes were large as the transporter breached the artificial atmosphere of the unknown planet and, honouring the shape of its construction, darted through the sky with its sole focus on the planet’s port.

“Master Ace, we are now beginning our descent onto #OWS5. The weather is warm with a three percent chance of rain in three hours time. Based on your appointed destination I am obliged to remind you that the days are shorter on the right hemisphere of #OWS5 and you should leave a minimum of t—”

“Yes, yes. Information received.” Ace dismissed with a wave of his hand. RzjfTr

“I’ve never been to this planet.” Caius’ voice was brimming with excitement. He was barely able to contain himself in his seat. He wanted to run back and forth between the two windows and capture every sight in their quick landing.

“So I was told by your father. Do you know much about it?”

“That you were born here and that it’s one of the oldest.”

Ace chuckled, “Very good. But #OWS5 isn’t one of the oldest, it is the oldest when it comes to the designer planets. It was the first hunk of space-rock that was enhanced by Nova all those years ago. But today, it’s not as popular as other places. Which is why your papa gave me permission to take you here on this little day trip.” 1G6ewf

Which explained why their transporter wasn’t stopped and put through the rigorous security checks like the ones set up around all the other planets. Instead, after only a moments hesitation when automatically inputting and registering various landing-codes, the transporter descended vertically in its final leg of the journey, giving Caius a slowly-emerging view of the planet’s surface.

When they left the transporter, after Ace’s insistence not to forget his art supplies, he took his small hand and kept a firm yet comfortable grip. Caius squeezed in return, more out of agitation to get exploring. As the Port that welcomed them was situated in the centre of a city.

Although worn in places, Caius found their surroundings fascinating to look at. The older buildings had more life to them than the pearly white ones which he remembered stood on Nova.

As Ace decisively led the way, what became clearer was that although old, #OWS5 didn’t intend on striving for perfection.  hgR8do

When they came to a halt, Ace dropped their handholding and instead fixed his grasp onto Caius’ little shoulders. From behind him, he directed his body to face a building designed in a unique way that Caius had never seen before. “Here we are!” Ace announced happily.

A grand archway stood at the centre of the building with many deep-set windows all around it. Two large double doors, showing its age as the once striking black finish was peeling off, stood imposingly beneath. But it was ageing quite majestically and judging by its position in the old city, it was a treasured place. So naturally it called out to Caius.

“This is where I came when I was just a little bit older than you,” Ace reminisced. “It’s where I found my love for what I do.”

Caius tilted his head back so he could look up at Ace who stood behind him when he asked, “Is it an art gallery? I read about those.” 6T0POR

Ace shook his head. “This is a museum, little star. All manner of old things reside within, it’s what helped transport my imagination in all sorts of directions. It’s how I developed my drive to not just draw what was in front of me, but instead to think about what I can’t see. There’s no restrictions when it comes to your imagination, we just feel the need to describe it using shapes and colours.”

Caius listened attentively. “Let’s go in.” He eventually insisted and Ace was more than happy to let him lead the way on this occasion.

That three percent chance of rain proved ineffective, as three hours later there wasn’t a single drop. Not that Caius would have noticed as he worked on his third fifteen-minute sketch that Ace had tasked him with. The time restriction was crucial, for a number of reasons.

Hardly anyone was in the museum, but the odd stray person who happened to walk past always did a double-take at the two of them. One who had obsidian-coloured hair and eyes just as dark, while the other had white hair with the softest of blues for eyes. They fit in almost too well against the frozen magnificence of the statues around them.

When the time was up and Ace calmly removed the sketchbook from Caius, even when the child lightly protested and wanted to keep on going, he sat Caius beside him on one of the benches and had him talk through his process and why he had chosen whatever section it was of his chosen focal point. azenEd

Fluidly, Caius left the frustration of being unable to finish and lapsed into contented communication.

Eager to keep Caius’ attention moving forwards, Ace walked over to the window and pointed. “Can you tell me what planet that is?” It was the same question as before.

Approaching, Caius looked out. As they had been warned, the light had substantially faded in the time they had spent in the museum, and during which a big purple planet had become much more distinctive. “It’s Calix.” He marvelled.

“That’s right— we’re the closest planet to it. I suppose this will be your first time seeing it in the flesh, what do you think?” 1o2kyl

“So big and purple.”

Ace laughed. “You’re not wrong. It looks just like #OWS2, right?”

Please visit chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

Caius paused and then swiftly turned his attention towards the older man, “Does Calix have purple lightning storms, too?”

“That it does. In fact, a vast majority of the year, Calix battles with storms. It’s that interminable energy that Nova was so interested in to begin with, and needed to harness. So they sent people to go and get it for them, but everything is twice as hard on Calix. Things take longer than it’s supposed to and most crucially, things proved to be far more dangerous than initially expected.” AXf5TR

“The energy circling the planet is so strong that it drains the fuel that keeps transporters moving, so even the journey there is longer. So very quickly Nova realised they would need to have a permanent base there. Even now, those who live on Calix are shielded inside ginormous domes that house cities. It’s quite magnificent and certainly perks my interest as an artist.”

Caius was amazed. Although he knew details of Calix, such as it being far from on friendly terms with Nova, he never knew there were actual cities on the turbulent planet. “What sort of people live there? I’m not brave enough.”

“Hm, I’m not sure about that, little star. I’d say you’re plenty brave. But you’re right, those that live on Calix are conditioned to that lifestyle and Omegas like you and I are definitely not Calix material, but that’s what the domes are for. It’s predominantly Alphas and Betas who are able to work on the outside for short periods of time, but even then they have their specific backgrounds.”

Ace continued to answer any questions Caius had, most of which consisted of the storms that lasted for months on end. When they eventually moved away from the window and started to return to the entrance, a very last statue caught Caius’ attention. It reminded him of the drawing Ace had done on his first page. MyR9aw

“Do you want a final fifteen-minute challenge?”

Caius nodded quickly and it made the other man smile broadly. “Ok then. In fact, I’m going to pop to the bathroom, so I want you to promise me you’re not going to move from this exact spot.”

“Promise!” Caius was already taking back his sketchbook and flipping through to a clean page.

Ace shook his head and walked off down one of the numerous empty hallways. Caius was left staring in wonder at the only statue in the room that wasn’t finished off in the same style as the rest. It looked rougher, but the beauty of it was that it appeared to exaggerate more movement.  tX0dfe

It was the only one that didn’t look frozen in time.

A set of footsteps steadily approached and Caius presumed they belonged to Ace, but he was far too involved in getting a sketch done as quickly as possible. Stopped beside him, Ace still hadn’t said a word. Out the corner of his eye, Caius caught a glint of gold under the lights of the museum.

Turning his head he retreated a step when he saw that it wasn’t who he thought it was. Instead a tall man with blond hair was looking at the statue, he stood with his hands behind his back and wearing a fitted uniform of white and gold. Various golden embellishments identified the stranger as someone with links to the military.

He was quite a bit taller than Ace was, and definitely papa, which unsettled Caius as he now stood alone with the man.  PwBdcR

“I’m sorry I startled you. I got excited when I saw an actual clay statue here on this planet.” The man looked down at him with a handsome smile, his eyes incredibly blue. He didn’t look at Caius for long, returning his cool gaze to the statue in front of them.

Caius couldn’t help but ask, “Clay?”

“Indeed. Clay used to be everywhere because of the different conditions of the planets back in the olden times. With the addition of water, you could make works of art like this one. Look, you can even see where a sharp object like a blade was used to carve the details.” The man reached out and gently ran his fingers along the statue’s edge.

“You’re not allowed to touch.” Caius blurted before he could stop himself, reiterating what he himself had been told not too long ago. AkB12h

The man only smiled. “This clay statue has survived far more than the slightest of touches. No one will even know.” When he eventually removed his hand, he looked at Caius and tilted his head a little to the side.

“I can tell you want a feel, don’t worry I won’t tell on you.”

Please support our translators at chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

Caius bit his lip and shook his head, eyes locked on the statue which’s texture he really wanted to determine on his own.

The man cladded in white and gold crouched down in front of him and held out his large hand. “Then why don’t I be the one to guide your hand? Technically then you’re not the one making that choice.” kIHgPa

Caius had managed to cling onto his awareness, enough to determine that listening to a stranger wasn’t a good idea. But it was only going to be the quickest of touches, so he nodded and held out his own small hand.

The man smiled and enclosed his own around the back of Caius’ hand, the feeling of his gold ring cold against his skin. He manoeuvred their hands over to the clay statue and Caius smiled when his skin came into contact with the rough texture.

“Was it worth it?” The deep voice asked and Caius barely nodded as he was lost again to his own thoughts. He only registered the slight squeezing of his hand, something Ace had done a couple of times when they walked around, out of comfort. But what Caius hadn’t expected was a sudden prickling sensation. Yanking him from his silence.

“Ow.” He protested and the man removed his hand sharply. zAw7 C

“I’m really sorry, little one, it looks like my ring caught you.”

Caius looked at his hand but couldn’t see any damage, only the slight reddening of his skin under the man’s hold.

“It’s fine.” Caius mumbled.

“You know, if you’re really interested in sculptures and want to see even bigger and better ones, then you should really see the ones on Nova. They are quite spectacular.” ZKy1PG

Caius looked up at the man who looked right back at him. After a moment of just staring at each other, the man chuckled and gently rested his hand on the top of Caius’ head for a number of seconds before removing it. “You’re a cute kid, you know that? You deserve a more fulfilling life.”

“Thank you for your words of wisdom,” Ace’s cold voice caught both of them off-guard, “but seeing as he’s only ten years old, he has some time yet to go before he has to make any life decisions.”

Caius had turned to face Ace and didn’t get to see the man’s expression when he spotted his temporary guardian.

“Yes, of course. I am simply surprised to see such a startling young child in such a… place. It was lovely to meet you, little one. Keep in mind my suggestion about the statues.” He continued with his warm smile right until Caius couldn’t see his face anymore. He turned, directing his private attention towards Ace. g Hjrb

“We’ll be in touch.” He promised and left without argument, the back of his pristine white and gold uniform vanishing out of sight. Quite literally, as he was there one minute and gone the next.

  1. Who’s that guy?! Hands off, stop trying to mold our MC into your preconceived ideas of how omega are supposed to be! Who wants to stay in touch with you?! Stay away, pei, pei!

  2. Uh oh. I think he just took like a blood sample to see if that’s Fin’s child. Don’t touch strangers ah!

  3. Thank for the chapter!

    Yikes that guy- extremely inappropriate

So is like goverment plans? Making MC some kind of test subject?

    Also the hidden message :0

  4. What that man needs Caius’s blood for?! Disgusting.

I’m really surprised he allowed that man’s touching. He’s usually so cautious.

    Thanks for the chapter!

    • Here’s the thing, he’s cautious to a degree. There will always be moments where that focus slips. Especially when it comes to his passion for art. He is literally a child in a candy shop at the moment~ and no problem, hoped you enjoyed it! n_n

  5. Crap! Is he a good guy or a bad guy?! He took a blood sample, didn’t he? Is he related to Caius’ father?

  6. I really like Ace and I hope he doesn’t end up betraying the father/son duo!

Also, what’s up with alphas needing to be in charge of everything? They are so damn upset that Fin refused to be like all the other omegas that they are now targeting Caius. >_<

    Thanks for the chapter <3

  7. well… links to the military is a hint toward the father. but if its something good or bad , who knows. Everyone has their agenda… grml. I dont feel good about that guy, but thanks god Caius didnt get kidnapped (yet). I had these vibes through the whole chapter when Ace suddenly left… brrrrr… shudders

  8. Thank you!

I had these vibes like Ace has given this opportunity to meet Caius and that prick, if it wasn’t for take blood sample, it could be to inject some medicine or tracker…

  9. Thanks for the chapter! Military guy giving off high amounts of suspicious vibes .

By the way is anyone else having problems with captcha popping up every chapter?

  10. Hm, I think I’m missing something why are the People in Nova so obsessed with him? Maybe I should reread.

  11. Oh no! Did he get a blood sample?! D: leave him alonneeee! He just wants a good life QAQ

I adore that Caius is an artist! I know we’ve had this information since ch. 1 but it just hit me lol. It’s so much fun to see Caius become enraptured in his works!

Thank you for the chapter!! (人 •͈ᴗ•͈)

  12. I had assumed that the ring was the electricity thing ’cause of sound and futuristic thing– turns out, he used his ring to get blood sample based on the comments !!(o.o
