This looks like it might be varience, esp since it was described as stats. Frankly, the letters and problem don’t look familiar to me either, but I suspect it would be pretty intuitive if it was structured the same style as US stats classes teach. I took a grad stats class last year (two sections worth). Not a hard problem, but it requires some context, both cultural (for how stats is taught) and mathematical (of stats itself). Clearly the character lacks the latter context, presumably having forgotten it, and us readers lack the former :).
