Chapter 61

  “Wait!”
AriIo1

I jumped up in fright and tried to stop Rhine, but the sound of the gunshot proved it had already been fired out from behind, hitting the water in an instant and splashing droplets everywhere! Instantly, Agares’s fishtail quickly dodged away like a lightning bolt, not seeming to have been hit. I hastily charged towards Rhine, slamming him into the hatch door behind him without a warning. Then I began to jostle and fight with him. I gripped onto Rhine’s gun tightly, forcing the muzzle, so it couldn’t aim directly at Agares. The strength that exploded out of my body was so great and astonishing that even if Rhine turned me over and pushed me against the door, he wouldn’t be able to retrieve control of his gun again.

“Desharow.” From the corner of my eyes, I caught a glimpse of Agares’s tail sweeping a few meters outward. However, the distance between him and the hatch door was beyond his reach. He could only swing that deadly weapon that wanted to kill Rhine near the edge of the pool wall.

Rhine’s ashened and displeased complexion faced me, with his eyes nearly popping out. “You said you were just bewitched? Desharow! Clearly, it looks like you’re actually addicted to him up to the point that you can’t even free yourself! You must like it right? Then I can satisfy you too!”

As he said this, he unexpectedly used the frame of his firearm to hold down my body, coming up to rain kisses onto my neck like a heavy storm. I was seething with rage at this point and wanted to give Rhine a good punch, but, before I could make my move, I heard an awful sounding “bang.” A shadow smashed upon Rhine’s head. Suddenly, his strength was greatly loosened, allowing me to break free. I saw Rhine staggeringly fall down at the threshold of the cabin’s hatched door, wiping at the blood shedding from his head. Beside him, there rolled a metal bucket making clattering sounds, the same one that Agares had used to break the security camera from before.

I immediately bent down to seize the opportunity and snatch away his gun. Yet his reaction was much faster than I had expected. He firmly grabbed the gun, used the cabin’s door to support himself up to stand after a full roll on the ground, and then he directly shot Agares!

At that moment, without even a second thought, I threw myself into the water by instinct. Then, just like the first time I had confronted Rhine to defend Agares on that starting voyage ship, I used myself to block Agares. Although my small frame was not sufficient enough to be a proper defense shelter to rely on, this was the only thing that I could do.

The fishtail underneath me retracted like a shadow, lifting me up against Agares’s chest with his caudal fin raised in front, completely protecting my heart. Agares’s lips were pressed next to my neck, and, even though my ears didn’t hear him say anything, there was a low voice that was heard in my head, “You wanted to protect me?”

I couldn’t help but freeze. It was not just because Agares suddenly communicated with me through my head, but because his tone sounded like he was smiling! What the hell? I didn’t understand what was so amusing about my action to protect him, especially when we were facing a life and death crisis at the moment! Could it be that he still regarded me as that same child in his embrace more than ten years ago? j0mi8R

“Damn it, shut your fish trap!” I lowered my voice, “Rhine wants to obtain me. He won’t kill me, but he will definitely use any unscrupulous method to kill you!”

“I’m warning you, leave him at once! Desharow, come to my side!”

Rhine was panting heavily, and the muzzle of his gun trembled as it pointed at us both. It made me feel very uneasy. This guy’s thoughts were really hard to figure out. I wasn’t sure whether he would actually kill both Agares and me, since he still couldn’t conquer me. However, right now, having the instinctive need for self-protection, Agares’s action had weighed heavily onto my heart, completely occupying the upper hand.

I pressed myself closely to his chest, feeling his steady and powerful heartbeat sending comforting chills down my spine. A strange, indescribable emotion swelled up within my heart, causing my bone marrow to be filled with courage up to the brim.  7m8G1U

“He can’t kill me. I am the last black-scaled Monarch. I am immortal. Desharow, from now on, that guy will not be able to violate you. My ‘magnetic field’ will protect you. Find a way to get out of here and find Nakamiya. It will open up the ‘gate’ to our world.”

Following that, my body was released back down. I didn’t know why, but I suddenly recalled the deathly silent merfolk world that closely resembled a mass sea-grave. An extremely ominous premonition instantly rose within my heart, making me subconsciously lean over and envelop his tail into my embrace, while raising my head to look at him like the child I once was back then. However, he simply lifted his tail and gently raised me up to the wall of the artificial pool. Rhine immediately suppressed my arm and dragged me towards the cabin’s hatched door. I was breathing quickly as I held Agares’s eyes, disregarding my blurring eyesight which was caused by the trickling water that came from down from my head.  Dd5l8C

Perhaps, I was deeply connected with Agares, but we were from two entirely different planets after all. Plus, who knew whether they were tens of thousands of light-years apart, or even several galaxies away. Destiny is just like our Milky Way, vast and torrentuous, where Agares and I are nothing but two tiny spores. Maybe our connections were even more microscopic and much more vulnerable than even a single strand of hair.

Yet no matter how powerful Agares was, there will always be moments where even he can’t reverse the rotation of the sky , just like he has no way to resurrect the dead bodies of his people who will forever sleep at the bottom of the boundless, lonely sea. I, on the other hand? I will always try my very best to rescue him, but in the future, I really don’t know how far along we will be able to walk together until.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

I hung my head down and suddenly felt a dull, yet stuffy, pain aching in my entire heart.

At that moment, Sakarol, who finally came rushing over, slapped Rhine across his face. “Enough, this is such a farce. Rhine, where is your self-regulation as a military personnel? Should I request that Admiral Celt remove you from your position, or perhaps, put you to death even? I gave this Russian boy to you to control him, not to make yourself go crazy for him!”  j46onH

”Understood!” Rhine raised his trembling hand and pressed it against his bleeding forehead. I immediately broke away from his hands from this opportunity. Rhine bowed his head to Sakarol, but his two eyes were still fixed upon me like an exhausted dhole finding a dead end. Slowly, he articulated, “Please excuse my impulse earlier, Colonel Sakarol. What should I do with him now?”

”Lock him away.” Sakarol’s expression eased up slightly and took a hold of Rhine’s gun. “And, you are forbidden to kill this merman ever again. Dr. Bing Ye needs him alive and be able to speak in the language of their race.” Her annoying looking eyebrows raised upwards, and then she stared at me. “Conquering the population of a species starts with their language. Speaking of such, we’ll have to trouble you to communicate with this merman more often, Desharow, our little scholar.”

In your dreams! I was clamoring in my head, but, on the surface, I just kept a straight and calm face. “What about my friends? As long as you find a doctor to treat them properly, then I am willing to cooperate with you.”

“Then, we thank you for your cooperation.” The voice of an old man suddenly came from the entrance of the stairs. He spoke English, but his accent was short and peculiar, sounding just like the Japanese. Furthermore, it sounded familiar. Wait! This was….. Oa62Yz

The moment I realized whose voice it belonged to, the figure of a trembling old man was already walking down the stairs, becoming more clear in front of my eyes.

Suddenly, I became dumbfounded to my spot as if I was electrocuted. I looked at the not-so-unfamiliar face in shock. He was still wearing that black kimono as he did a few years ago, and, even though his hair was pale-white, his face was missing wrinkles. The texture of his skin looked as soft as a young girl’s, however, it was stretched on his face like a flat sheet of white paper. It seemed as though he had undergone excessive facelift surgery, making his face look very stiff and strange.

”Long time no see, Desharow.” He lightly waved at me as he spoke to me in Japanese.

"Mr. Shinichi…"I murmured with my eyes widened in disbelief. I felt extremely shocked to see an old friend who I had once watched die in front of me. Additionally, I had even attended his funeral. Thus, for him to suddenly appear in front of me with this appearance and new identity, it made me fully realize that a huge and meticulous conspiracy must have been going on back for many years. With me as a key element, it unfolded quietly, a woven spider web of mysteries that shrouded my past and future. JsFQrT

”Please call me Dr. Bing Ye. I’m glad to see you again, my little Russian fish bait.” Mr. Shinichi’s turbid eyes were staring attentively at me. He appeared to want to smile, but his stiff face could only move minisculely, like a little invisible ripple on top of stagnant water.

My fist clenched tightly, and my nails dug into my flesh. I shook my head in utter disbelief, “Didn’t you die? I saw it with my own eyes; your ECG stopped and I also saw you being placed into the coffin too!”

As I said that, I recalled the thunderstorm of that afternoon many years ago. It was like seeing it right in front of me again. I remembered that the sky was gloomy that day while I accompanied Mr. Shinichi, listening to his experiences of seeing merfolk when he was young. Then he looked out of the window at the sea, swallowing his very last breath. Later, I had followed his relatives, friends and monks to watch over his funeral procession.

I still remembered that it was a traditional Japanese funeral with complicated etiquette. Since Mr. Shinichi had no direct descendants, and as his only exchange student, I had to personally help his soul depart peacefully, covering the coffin and carrying it according to his requested task until he was finally buried 49 days later. So, only God could know how terrifying this scene in front of me was!   r8g4Q

”Yes Desharow, everything that you saw was true.” He steadied himself on his crutches and limped closer in front of me step by step. “ I was really dead, but now I’ve come back from the dead. Look at me, I’m getting younger every day. It’s all thanks to the genes extracted from our Mermaid. It’s a miracle!”

As he said that, he pointed to one of the many glass water tanks on the right filled with imprisoned merfolk. My gaze turned to follow and was surprised to see that he was pointing to a younger merman with an Eastern appearance. The merman’s black eyes were staring unwavering at Mr. Shinichi, and in those teary pupils there held a burning enmity.

“Remember the story the old woman said about her son being taken away by a Mermaid during a shipwreck?”Mr. Shinichi mentioned this with a pitiful tone. “Well, he had come back in search of his mother, and with that, we were able to get ourselves in touch with a natural merfolk compass and a few gene samples. This was basically God’s will!”

Looking directly at the stupefied me, he stopped, his eyes now showing some loss and frustration. “It’s just that those gene samples were too unstable in my body, so we needed a stronger and a more invasive quality of genes. Just think about it, Desharow: forever young, rapid wound regeneration, extraordinary strength. We will be able to advance and boost human evolution and achieve the greatest of ‘survival of the fittest’. How exciting is this?! Join us in our plans, and you, too, will be a miracle biologist, even better than Wallace and Darwin!”  R450WZ

Survival of the fittest!? What formidable words! This was exactly the motto of these inhuman fascist legions during World War II to carry out brutal massacres. Now, they were trying to conquer the merfolk population, strengthen their soldiers with merfolk genes, and achieve their “survival of the fittest” by triggering the Third World War.

I never knew that from the minute I was born, because I carried Agares’s genes, that I had become the most critical chess piece to these Nazis’ plans. Many years ago, the personal invitation letter sent by Mr. Shinichi wasn’t simply a great opportunity to study abroad, rather it actually became the hands of a devil that dragged me into this abysmal whirlpool!

”You psychopath… You guys are all crazy!” From head to toe, I was covered in goosebumps. I shakingly shook my head, staggering a couple of steps. “Trying to change the natural evolution process of nature will not obtain any good results. You will only be devoured by your own terrible desire! Remember the 1945 Munich Zombie incident. You guys attempted to use your already fallen soldiers to deal with the allied force. Pitifully, in the end, it led to the downfall of your entire internal base! You people will never succeed, whether it was in the past or now in the present.”

Sakarol laughed, “How will there be success without failure? We didn’t have enough time or experimental samples back then during World War II, but now…” She spread out her arms, “Look around you. We have all the right conditions for success, and, not only that, we have a pivotal key—you.” cCxTdr

Sakarol stared at me. Then suddenly raised her hand to touch my chin. I turned my head away in disgust, but Rhine firmly held my arm from behind. He even quickly took control of the handcuffs to limit my movements. My chin was pinched by a finger painted with purple nail polish. “A beautiful man who has the natural disposition to strongly enchant merfolk. You have a lot of little secrets, and I will slowly unearth them all, so you better… Cooperate obediently.”

“The ‘key’ you say?” I coldly lowered my eyelids, straightened my back, and then looked down at Sakarol with my height advantage. Being the strong woman she was, she most likely did not like being looked down upon like this, but I didn’t give a shit. Furthermore, I indifferently spat out, “Then you better treat my friends nicer, otherwise if I kill myself, I believe your plans won’t advance so smoothly anymore.”

Sakarol feigned being terrified, going as far to even exaggerate her blood red lips into an oval shape. “Oh, really! In the watchful care of our Captain Rhine, how could he ever allow you to commit suicide?” She looked behind me, her lips curling lightly, “Here, I’m allowing you to do anything you want to him, Rhine. I understand that dutifully serving on this long, sea voyage has been somewhat taxing on you. It’s time for you to be rewarded. I will permit you to treat him as a woman Do you know what I mean?”

”What? No!” I yelled out. I began to struggle with all my strength to free myself from the handcuffs and from Rhine’s grasp. However, I felt an immediate needle-like stab of electrical shock on my neck, making me lose my consciousness in an instant.  h7Sc0G

Hello, Translator here! Sorry for the late update, I had so much tn notes to put up. I also would like to thank my editor for helping me doing some research. Again, most TN are there cause I find a lot of them interesting to be honest and thought you guys might want to learn more about them too.  If any readers find any info we found wrong you can always comment to correct us, Thank You

Here’s a little Skit My editor made:It have nothing to do with Desharow Merman!

Translater: So… Wanna hear something I was thinking about earlier? (ꈍ ꒳ ꈍ✿) EnfDJH

Editor: Tell me tell me, (✿ ︣⓪ ᴗ ︣⓪) づ

Translator: This one’s a doozy.

Editor: I’m listening.

Translator: Did you know being upside down for too long can kill you? Fbzm9A

Editor: I have heard of it before. I used to sit on my bed upside down and my mom was always like, “If you keep doing that, your eyes will pop out of your head!” d( ̄▽ ̄o)

Translator: Ahh, just popping out of your head. but even bursting IN your head. Because your eyeballs is not really hard, it’s actually a sac full of fluid and too much pressure can cause the fluid sac to… POP.  So basically I was watching this video, and there was this guy, Edward Jones, in 2004 who died from facing upside down for 28 hours.

Editor: ( ⁰д⁰)

Translator: He was stuck in the Birth Canal… 1fBmIH

Editor: Pfft, Birth Canal ( ՞ਊ՞)

Translator: It’s a real place! It’s not like the, y’know— (๑′°︿°๑)

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Editor: I know (〃 ̄ω ̄〃ゞ

Translator: Anyway, it’s not a real canal, it’s a cave. It was nicknamed the Birth Canal because you can only go head first in it. This guy got stuck, and upon his death, they couldn’t remove him cause it’s too risky, so the cave was permanently closed with the body still sealed inside. rpJhdW

Editor: Aw, no, that’s too tragic!
(●︿●)

Translator: Ya, imagine being stuck in there. Even if you aren’t claustrophobic, it’s pretty traumatic.

Editor: I don’t want to imagine it.
(个_个)

(I want to clarify that we are not making fun of the case or the death of the person. There were some serious discussion regarding this case between my editor and I when we were chatting. This was just a shortened and made quirky type of script to tell you readers what was it like when we are working together on chapters, hehe. Whenever we are in need of break from staring at the white page and black words, we would talk about some really strange things like this. Sorry if it’s too much. But if you enjoy it, we might do more. ) 8Bhruq

p.s. Should I make character charts or nah?

Translator's Note

TN: Special meaning: Like a shadow/如影随行: Since you all know that shadow will follow your body right? So this idiom can basically means following something important. Like two people in a loving relationship and always staying together, following one another. —makes me feel so warm ahh

Translator's Note

unable to turn around a hopeless situation; to fail to save the situation

Translator's Note

Translator's Note

Mr. Shinichi, a senior who had studied merfolks for fifty years that Desharow often visited. For better reference go to Chapter 1

Translator's Note

This name might possibly be changed in future translations, I’ll make a note when that happen

Translator's Note

Editor: Wow it does sound complicated: “There are at least twenty steps in the Shinto funeral process …” [and I have a link for those 20 steps right here: https://www.econdolence.com/learning-center/religion-and-culture/shinto/shinto-funeral–burial-customs/]. “Each step focuses on purification, preparing the spirit for the journey to the spirit world and cleansing the mourner from the weight of death and grief.

Translator's Note

Editor: Here’s why: “Funeral arrangements are typically made by the eldest son, or oldest male relative. It is expected for the funeral to be held as quickly as possible. Exceptions are made if relatives have to travel a distance to participate in the services.”

Translator's Note

I thought it interesting. “The family of the deceased will be in a period of mourning for 49 days after the funeral. Once a week they will visit the grave to place fresh flowers and to burn incense. On the 3rd, 7th and 49th days they will have a short memorial service at the site, led by the Shinto priest.”

Translator's Note

She was interviewed by Desharow since she was an eyewitness to a Merman taking away her son during a shipwreck. For Reference, go to Chapter 12

Translator's Note

For better understanding: The bombing of Munich(a city in Germany) was in 1944 and it was in 1945 when WWII ended. Basically this sentence means: After the bombing of Munich in 1944, the Nazi army was practically destroyed but instead of backing down they tried to revive the fallen army(forcing people who are already injured and dying back onto battlefield)= zombie to fight against the impossible, the allied. And because of them doing the impossible they end up destroying them self, the Nazi’s. So no real Zombies.

Translator's Note

Ahh for all my Female readers out there, I  hope you guys aren’t too offended at this part. Don’t worry I am with you if you felt that way.  But to clarify, think of it as this, During war time often women are popular for prostituting themselves to soldiers and yes this happens a lot during wars back then. So Sakrol was basically telling Rhine to have sex with Desharow

  1. Ok so Agares is immortal, huh. But wait, he wants to go back to his world with Desharow? I thought that place was dead. And his species was really extinct apart from him… I wonder how that happened (and that Shinichi dude ended up being bad smh… so much for having the same name as one of my fav characters)

    Also, the I like reading the t/ns. Some are pretty interesting. And, can I suggest not keeping the text with t/ns bold? It’s a bit difficult on the eyes when reading ^^;

    Thanks for the chapter! 🙂

  2. I really loving this novel. Thnks for the translation. Just can’t wait for another week…..oh! Now i become a greedy reader 🌝😉❤

  3. OK I had a feeling Argares was immortal, with him being mermaid jesus and all. I guess that makes Desharow immortal too at least after his full transformation?

Plus it’s so weird to hear Argares speak in full sentences now.

Also I am so over Rhine I hope Desharow gets to kill this guy with his bare hands next chapter i hate sackrol too how does it make sense to prostitute out someone you find valuable?

I really enjoy you guys TN’s cause I’m learning while I’m reading. Like I didn’t know you could die for being upside down for too long! Now I’m forever scared of sitting upside down on my bed!

    Anyways thanks for the chapter!

  4. Thanks for all the work on this novel. I love the the little notes. Talk about addictions…I haven’t been “addicted” to a storyline and characters since “Grandmaster of Demonic….”
