Chapter 44
“Oh my god! What is that thing!”
A man roared out with fright, bringing us back from our shocked state and we raised our weapons one after another at the unidentified creature floating from the swamp. But then we heard Lafarre whisper, “Don’t move, this is a type of monitor lizard. Lizards are extremely sensitive to motion. The more we move, the faster we die!”
An armed man whispered, “You guys squat down and slowly retreat along the same path.”
As he said this, he turned his head to gesture a few hand signals at several of his comrades behind him and many nodded their heads tactically in understanding. This must be a commonly seen arranged secret signals among mercenaries during fighting,
We followed the instructions of these experienced mercenaries accordingly and squatted down while staring fixedly at the red-eyed monster to avoid any possible unexpected attacks as we carefully backed ourselves into the covers of the trees.
But it was pretty much too late to do much as a wave of dirt and mud flew up from the swamp.
A large black outline stood up, facing forward, and in the muddy water, a large mouth split open revealing sharp bloody teeth with a large venomous purple tongue slithering out into the air. The razor-sharp beast claws, like an excavator, dug deeply into the ground. After that, it arched its back lined with an umbrella-shaped membrane and stared at us with predatory eyes as it let out a snake-like hiss.
My eyes widened from shock. This wasn’t just any type of lizard you could randomly search up in an encyclopedia of biological organisms. This creature’s appearance from the start was very similar to that of an Estesia, a creature that existed in the Cretaceous era that ate young dinosaurs and dinosaur eggs!
Only God knew how this place could exist, much less a creature that was supposed to be long extinct!
Unexpectedly, the monitor lizard didn’t immediately attack, it just laid dormant at its spot. Its glowing red eyes, however, were rotating in two different directions like the lens of a surveillance camera, observing us as if we were just a group of small ants, patiently waiting for actions. I didn’t know if its mud-filled poisonous tongue had the same terrifying hunting skills like a chameleon, but if so, even with our weapons at hand, it will be difficult to contend against it.
Extreme nervousness caused sweat to keep coming out from every opening pores. I didn’t dare to move, only staying where I was with my rifle pointing directly at the lizard’s mouth. Eva, out of fear, was clinging closely to my back.
I felt her trembling slightly and I couldn’t help but feel worried that she would suddenly scream or run away. In order to calm her down, I stretched an arm downward to gently hold her wrist with some exerted strength, but Eva’s finger only tightened more around the hem of my jacket.
The feeling of being depended on has raised the protective instinct in my heart and has even overshadowed a bit of my fear. However, the moment my courage increased, I suddenly found that one of the monitor lizard’s eyes was staring straight in our direction and soon, its entire head slowly turned toward us. The eyes narrowed, staring directly at me as if penetrating through me to see the dark depth of the forest.
All of a sudden, I found this ancient creature a bit peculiar because it didn’t appear to look like a hungry, starving predator. It didn’t observe us like we were just prey, but more like we were a group of ignorant, small, and measly ants it wanted to crush. It looked like it was pondering over what our purpose here was, where we came from, and whether it was even worth it to slaughter us.

However, in the end, Eva trembled even more. The barrel of her rifle was extended over my shoulder, aiming directly at the monitor lizard’s eyes, but I quickly gripped her wrist and whispered a soft warning,” Don’t panic Eva, calm down….”
My words came to an abrupt stop when a loud “bang” sounded and a burst of smoke came from the muzzle by my shoulder as an astonishing force sent Eva and I tumbling backward. My ears were immediately filled with an irritating ringing sound, making me feel dizzy in an instant.
I shook my head as I tried to stand up. I quickly noticed that not far away, the umbrella-shaped membrane around the monitor lizard’s neck, due to the being irritated, flared widely, and soon it let out a loud screeching roar, exposing its attacking stance toward us!
“Shit!”
I cursed out loud and turned around to aim my rifle straight at the creature’s head. The surrounding armed men also opened fire one after another in succession. In the rain of exploding bullets, the creature lifted its head up high and a purple-ish red tongue stretched out from its mouth straight towards us like a sharp, flying arrow.
Lafarre and I immediately pulled our triggers, shooting left and right, but my rotten marksmanship couldn’t accurately target the head and just happened to see the creature use its tongue like a whip, flicking it directly toward Eva who was stationed right next to me. She let out a loud shriek and, in a panic, she fell with a stumble but immediately got up, trying to run deeper into the jungle!
I let out a courageous holler and threw myself on top of her to tackle her down onto the ground, “Don’t run around Eva. It attacks the fastest moving prey!”
The minute I finished saying this, I heard something coming towards us at a very fast speed through the trees. Knowing something wasn’t right, I quickly turned around to stand up, subconsciously protecting Eva by putting her behind me, and soon, a purple-red shadow appeared, flashing over like lightning right before my eyes. In a conditioned reflex, I held up my gun to protect my head, however, I heard a movement right behind me, and suddenly I was dragged back by a strong force and fell a few meters away from where Eva was. I looked helplessly as the creature’s tongue quickly wrapped around both her legs, and pulled her upward. At any moment, she’ll be dragged straight into the mouth covered in bloody, sharp teeth and eaten whole!
”No!” I dashed forward trying to shoot in retaliation, Lafarre on the side also leapt upward, landing near the monitor lizard’s mouth trying to slay it with his machine gun. However, just then, a deep and low voice came out of nowhere, resonating throughout the entire jungle—
“Eka…la…Miya…”
That’s Agares’s voice!
Instantly, I saw the monitor lizard miraculously become still. Its tongue, as if receiving a message from a remote control, slowly loosened up, and the already fainted Eva came tumbling back onto the ground. Then, the creature closed its horrifying bloody mouth as well as its frightening red eyes before bowing its head and went crawling on the ground. This monstrous ancient creature actually performed a reverent and respectful posture as if it was a believer greeting its god.
I found the sudden change in situation unbelievable as I stared at the gigantic black creature among the trees with a wide gaping mouth unable to close. However, I suddenly noticed that the several armed men and Lafarre were staring at something right behind me with an eerily pale expression as if they had met a ghost. All at once, without a word, they raised their firearm to point at something behind my back.
I didn’t need to turn my head to know that there was something behind me, and to tell the truth, I had simultaneously caught the sight of a long black fishtail sneaking around from behind, and curling around my ankle.
I stiffly motioned a “stop” gesture, took a deep breath, and stuttered with an ashen face, “D-don’t misunderstand, this is m-my…fri—” A wet tongue licked my neck without a warning and the word got caught in my throat, but I still managed to squeeze it out, “–end”
A pale, damp webbed claw circled from behind my back and hugged my waist. Lafarre stared at us with wide eyes, to the point his eyeballs were almost falling out and I could only let out an awkward forced laughter, “Keke, it’s true. He’s just slightly… too…friendly.”
“He is my Desharow…”
Agares leaned his chin on the top of my head, and with his deep voice vibrating closely, it made my ear feel numb. I saw everyone from across gawking at us and I nearly lost my breath. I hurried and waved my hands in a mistaken manner, ”I forgot to tell you guys that back in Iceland, this big guy was caught by my and Rhine’s crew. I took care of him for a certain period of time before we released him… I don’t know why we met him here!”
Outwardly, I was spouting some big nonsense, but inside my heart I was shouting hysterically, Oh god, this guy actually spoke human words in front of my classmates, and it just had to be this specific sentence!
Just when I was feeling at my wit’s end, Lafarre woke up from his shocked state, picked Eva up at once, and shook his head incredulously at me. He stared between Agares and me with both fear and wonder mixed in his eyes, “Oh my god… you encountered a merman who can actually speak English… Desharow, you’re really lucky!”
Lucky?! How in the world was I lucky?! It’s the complete opposite!
My heart wailed in pain, and I tried to break away from the devil’s claw tightening around my waist, but Agares had no intention of letting me go, and instead hugged me tighter. I couldn’t help but suspect that if we continue to stay in this confrontational posture, this guy will do something more shameless in front of my classmates. He basically has no concept of shame.
However, Lafarre and others clearly didn’t believe Agares was friendly. After all, a Mermaid had forcefully taken away one of our companions yesterday. Just looking at their tense faces, you could see that they were getting ready to fight in this situation.
I had no option but to quickly back down for the time being, “How about… we let him join us for the time being. He may be able to help us find Davis and also help stop Sakarol and her team. Look, look, he even made the monster submit.”

I could imagine their encounter with the merfolk before they ascended to Merfolk Island, and perhaps they had lost a few of their companions. Their thrilling experience ought to equally match with what Rhine and I had encountered before.
”Trust me, I can communicate with him. I can persuade him to help us. Please? This big guy may look vicious, but he’s actually… very gentle.” I squeezed this difficult adjective out through my clenched teeth and even reached out my hand to stroke Agares’s cheek a couple times.
The sharp edge of his face felt weird against my palm as I stared at my skeptical teammates, forcing a smile.
“Hey, see guys, isn’t it? Just like a big dolphin.”
In response, one of Agares’s webbed claws that was placed behind my back wildy rubbed my ass, but fortunately nobody saw it. I blushed, and with gritted teeth, I grinded my foot on his caudal fins without batting an eyelid.

Because my harmonizing work was quite good, Lafarre and the others finally gave up on pursuing Agares’s matter. As for that large lizard creature, we still didn’t know why it surrendered to Agares but it had already slipped obediently back into the swamp. The jungle once again regained its tranquility like when we had first entered. On account of Eva who was still in a comatose state, we could only slow down our journey and found a place to rest in these broken walls of ruins.
Agares seemed to be quite familiar with his way in the ruins. He moved easily through the broken pillars in the swamp, disappearing for a few seconds before his upper body appeared at a circular stone step not far away from us.
I noticed that it resembled those ancient roman public bathing areas, however its function is unlikely used for bathing because this floating island regularly submerges under the water. All the lakes and riverbeds on this island were probably all interlinked from the bottom to the merfolk’s nest, furthermore, reaching outward to the seas.
Just thinking this way, I couldn’t stop my mind from imagining the layout and structure of this entire island. The interior was most likely hollow with a countless number of outlets so that it could quickly allow water to flow in and drain out. Moreover, the weight of this island was far lighter than any other island in the world. This may explain the mystery of how Merfolk Island was able to float on the sea and quickly sumberge regularly.
Was the island an artificial creation or a natural geographical structure? This was just too magical. It was basically like a beehive but also like a submarine.
The merfolk race and their world are really too mysterious.…… I sighed in my heart.
My eyes involuntarily flew to meet Agares’s gaze. In the mottled and fluctuating light, under the shadow of the trees, his face, half hidden behind the stone steps, only revealed two pairs of deep, bright serene pupils. He squinted his eyes, making his expression look like they were coercing my curiosity, as if hinting that I should go and ask him.
Just at this moment, a hand suddenly patted me on the shoulder. Lafarre handed me a fork with grilled fish skewered on top while looking over at Agares’s direction. “Sorry, Desharow. It really seems like this friend of yours has no hostility toward us. Thanks to him, the monster-like creature was driven away and we were able to save Eva successfully. Here, take this. Go show our sincere gratitude.”
I was a bit taken aback, “He’s a beast, why bother giving this for him to eat? He can go hunt himself!”
“Weren’t you his caretaker before? For Davis, why don’t you take care of him again!?”
Just Lafarre’s one, short response left me dumbstruck and speechless. I couldn’t help but feel annoyed at myself at what I had said from before. I stared at him and said, “Hey brother, do you know you’re practically pushing me into a fire pit?”
”What do you mean? You don’t want to get close with that merman? But just now…”
Lafarre raised his eyebrow in suspicion, clearly not understanding my sudden sharp change in attitude. Feeling diffident, I got up, grabbed the grilled fish and summoned up the courage to walk toward Agares.

Guys! I got another novel(a short one) approved by the author! If you guys didn’t know, but I had said that I have another novel that I wanted to translate beside Desharow. I want to see how I settle in with Desharow first before even starting and it did took me a while to get it approve by the author also. 
However, it will be hard for me to update that novel until the end of May cause I have exams I need to focus on. But teasers will be up in Wattpad next week to see if you guys are interested.

Tbh I started reading this for the smut. I stayed because this had really good plot also.
I wouldn’t put smut behind a different link. At most hiding it and having readers to click it to show it. But having a warning at the top is enough for me so I wouldn’t open it during work or inappropriate time.

It’s a BL, and there are sex scenes. The readers should be aware of that by now. I don’t feel like it’s necessary to hide anything since people shouldn’t be reading this stuff at work anyway.
I’m all hands for keeping novel as it is without hiding 18+ since there’s a lot of such scenes, but don’t mind if they are put under cut/hide, though a separate link sounds a bit too heavy and would require more work from you that doesn’t seem necessary. Just my opinion.
Plus this novel is really heavy with 18+ and different things, so I don’t think you should make it lighter. People know what they’re reading.
