Chapter 33

The ship began to sway even more dangerously, and I had to cling onto Agares’s neck in an ambiguous way in order to stay afloat on the surface. Agares had also encircled his arms around my waist to pull me forward from the water, before once again looking back out the very small window to the outside. The sky outside had become extremely dark, but surprisingly, there was no sign of an approaching storm. The surface of the sea appeared to be densely covered by sheets of dark clouds, similar to the shadows created by crowds of seabirds. The seawater itself illuminated a moss green halation, allowing me to have a clear view of the water. Immediately, I became utterly astonished from what I saw.

—From the vicinity of the ship’s prow, a massive whirlpool appeared on the surface of the water, and in the heart of it appeared two faintly discernible and luminous objects that were similar to car lights. At first, I thought it was some kind of large, radiant jellyfish, but it was only when the glowing objects gradually emerged from beneath the sea did I quickly discover that my judgment was wrong. ghSnmI

This was a… huge monster. The two shiny objects, each the size of a human head, were merely its eyes! Oh my gosh, even though whale sharks have colossal bodies, their eyes were never as big as these. In accordance with its size, this terrible thing beneath the powerful whirlpool might just be as big as our ship!

My breath quickened as the veins in my forehead throbbed violently. I immediately grabbed Agares’s arm and said, “That… what the hell is that?!”

  (Our natural predator)

“Our… predators…” Agares’s meaningful eyes were as dark and gloomy as the bottom of the ocean at night. He slightly opened his mouth to faintly utter a couple words, and his tone was completely sharpened with seriousness by his glowering fangs.

The natural enemies of the merfolk…

I widened my eyes to attentively watch the large shadow emerge from the whirlpool, as I felt every muscle in my body turning rigid, similar to that of an instrument string being stretched. Being the enemy of these ferocious, beast-like merfolk, what kind of terrible creatures were they? It was impossible for these creatures, as big as they were, to appear frequently above the sea. It was more likely that a monster living down in the dark abyss of the sea had specially come up to feed after it sensed a Mermaid’s presence!

It was a creature that I felt was vaguely familiar to what I had seen in those precious photos consisting of deep-sea creatures back at my research institute. This thing… could very much be a Pelican eel, but the shape of this eel-like monster was ten times bigger than the shape recorded in the photo. It was more appropriate to say that this was an ancient ancestor of Pelican eels!

At this time, the huge black shadow finally emerged completely out of the water and suddenly swam speedily straight toward the ship. Then a deafening crashing sound came from the deck under our feet, and the entire ship’s body tilted sharply to the left as if it had been hit by a tsunami. Even Agares lost his balance and fell back unsteadily with me following him into the water.

A more violent impact followed after. I involuntarily gulped down some seawater before I was pulled up by Agares, but before I could stand upright, the small opening behind us was busted open with a crack. In a split second, I saw a long, black shadow, resembling that of a snake, coming right at my face with lightning speed. The fishtail beneath me then immediately turned my body several meters away, and I managed to brush past the shadow. But then I was to see the black shadow flying straight at Agares’s face like a viper launching an attack!

My nerves were suspended aloft, and an alarming scream lodged in my throat. The snake-like thing was firmly captured in Agares’s sharp claws, and with a “ka” sound, the connecting bones were crushed into pieces which hung limply like wet noodles in his grip. At once, I was able to clearly see that it wasn’t some kind of sea-snake, as it had no head, but a circular, cross section[/caption]I stared at the strange thing and couldn’t help but feel nauseous. This empowered my mind to search endlessly for creatures which could match its shape.

The strange thing looked evidently like a lamprey, but it was incredibly long in length, actually more than three meters. However, the end of its body was still outside the small opening, so it was unclear. It started shaking its body, squirming out of nowhere as if it was dragged by some strange force. The way it moved… was like a cuttlefish’s… tentacles.

  Fuck!

I suddenly recalled what the shape of the monster’s tail had looked like in the water. This eel-like thing filled with sharp teeth must be this thing’s tentacle, or otherwise possibly a parasitic species!  JVWHbD

As I was thinking of this, several dark shadows suddenly rushed towards us in quick succession. Being caught completely off guard, I was nearly bitten head on. But luckily, Agares, with his sharp eyes and nimble reaction speed, shot out his tough and durable tail to slam against the wall, where two of those shadows, which were aiming at my stomach, slipped right over. Perhaps his counterattack had injured the eel-like monster, since the ship’s hull began to shake even more violently at this time. However, there were also sounds of disordered footsteps and gunshots above us. Then a man’s frightened roar penetrated the whole ship. “Quick, quick, let that merman in the bilge out and let it leave the ship. That monster must be coming for it. The monster is relentlessly biting at the bilge, so the motor will be damaged!”

”Understood! Hurry, Michael, Jerry! Quickly open the hatch door!”

Someone responded back with a loud voice, and soon there was the heavy sound of the cabin’s hatch door being opened above our head.

“Desharow…” Agares let out a low sound before suddenly relinquishing his grip on the few captured tentacles in his claws. Before I could even react, my waist was already in his embrace, and my entire body followed his fishtail to leap up into the air. With a thump, we knocked open the slightly widened seam of the cabin’s exit.  x7R6lE

What instantly hit my line of sight was the chaotic and terrifying scene on the ship. Dozens of massive, python-like tentacles were hovering by the ship’s edge. The many ring-shaped suction cups filled with jagged sawteeth were constantly attacking, and those once atrocious pirates were like startled birds, scattering around in order to avoid the attacks. Each pirate was carrying decent firearms, but pitifully, their bullets couldn’t beat back any of the tentacles, especially when the creature’s vital point wasn’t those tentacles. Several unlucky pirates were chomped on because they had run out of bullets too early. They were letting out blood-curdling screams as they were being dragged forcefully down from the boat, where they completely disappeared into the big, bloody mouth of the ferocious monster in the blink of an eye.

Oh heavens, I don’t want to die that way!

Witnessing such a horrific scene could frighten any normal person. I stood there, looking at the moving shadow in the sea in terror, as my entire body was rigid and frozen. Only until I was dragged into another dark cabin by Agares and was released from his hold, did I regain myself.

Agares’s long tail swept past me in the dim light of the night. His silhouette hung at the edge of the boat’s mass, before he turned to stare back at me with his luminous eyes which could scare anyone. All of a sudden, I felt that my soul was nailed in place. I wasn’t able to move, and his voice was the only thing floating into my ears on this dark terrifying night. nogi4F

“Desharow… stay here, and wait for me…”

  (Stay here. Wait for me.)

[5th tn] I don’t know what you guys think, but I highly believe this strange monster is some sort of an ancient Kraken. Considering from my research( my assumption basically since) vuePMz

  1. Kraken are often associated with Atlantis, the sinking island.
  2. A Kraken is a horrifying giant sea creature (said to be 1 mile long) that attacks ships.
  3. According to some tales, the Kraken was so huge that its body could be mistaken for an island.
  4. It was believed that just before their appearance, large whirlpools were seen.
  5. The Kraken was said to lie at the bottom of the sea and would only surface when in search of food or when disturbed, probably by a large ship.
  6. The myth of the Kraken is believed by many historians to have originated from the giant squid and have characteristics of squids or octopuses.
  7. And when you search up “monster eels with tentacles”, giant squids/octopuses shows up.

Here are some pictures of different Krakens coming from different regions. If you guys have any thoughts on this, feel free to mention it in the comments or the novel’s discord channel.

But if we were to really go by the description given, this might have been it (without so many eyes though).

Ps: incase anybody get confused: There is only one monster and Desharow was basically making assumptions on what he knows.

Hello Translator here. Thank you guys for patiently waiting.

I also would like to apologize for the long translator notes. Even though I know I am writing too much, I at the same time also feel like you readers won’t understand. If you find it trouble some, feel free to ignore it and just look at the pictures, or just let me know and in the future I’ll try to limit it. kedLWT

Also all the info I had gathered are respectfully credited to the different online sources I used. None of these research are from my head, as I dislike biology very much. haha

Thank you for reading

Translator's Note

Whale sharks(filter feeders) are the largest creatures in the sea and could reach over 30 ft. A realistic comparison is a regular yellow school bus. However, as the largest fish in the ocean, the whale shark actually has incredibly tiny eyes(each is the size of a golf ball) as compared to the size of their body, but don’t worry, they see just fine.

Translator's Note

Pelican eel, aka “gulper eel”, are deep sea creatures that are rarely seen by humans. Its most notable attribute is its large mouth. This enormous mouth is much larger than the eel’s body. The mouth is loosely hinged and can be opened wide enough to swallow an animal much larger than itself. The hapless prey is then deposited into a pouch-like lower jaw that can stretch wide open like a pelican bird, thus their name.

a surface or shape that is or would be exposed by making a straight cut through something, especially at right angles to an axis( basically think of a leeches mouth where you could drive a knife through the center of its flat opening F x4MK

Translator's Note

The Lamprey is an extremely ancient creature that has lived on Earth for 363 million years. It is one of the most primitive vertebrates known, and they are not typically considered as part of the fish kingdom. The lamprey looks like an eel with a slender body and has seven gill holes on each side of its body behind the eyes. They are characterized by a toothed, funnel-like sucking mouth(similar to blood sucking leeches). They were thought to be extinct 200 years ago. But nope. They are back! Its typical length in seawater is 47 inches.

  1. I actually like very much the images? It makes easier for my brain to understand the strange situations Desharow gets in XD

    Thank you for the chapter!

  2. Interesting. I wonder if it was Agares’ blood that called the monster. I appreciate the photos. I imagine a mix between the hinge jaw eel thing and the last photo you shared.

Thanks for the great translation ♥️♥️

  3. THAT LAMPREY THING IS HORRIBLE AND LOOKS LIKE SOME BIG ASS LEECH OR SOMETHING. my deepest fear is encountering some weird sea creature like this in ship voyages tbh. aaaaand, i think all the info is actually pretty useful, maybe is just a personal opinion but i enjoy long and informational footnotes bc that way i get to grasp a little more of the nuance behind the text.

thank you for the chapter! also, someone should write down how many times Desharow has said “he will die” or “he doesn’t want to [die]” throughout the novel lmaooo, spare little D

    😹😹

    • Haha, thank you for reading.

I’ll try to limit my wordings so it’s not too long but also easier to comprehend.

  4. That sea monster is just way too OP.

It’s funny that the images of sea creatures could be considered disturbing. It’s like saying someone is ugly, so they’re going to have mosaics in their photos or something.

  5. Thank you for the chapter. The pictures and the footnotes help to imagine the situation.. I don’t mind it. Wonder what will happen next!

  6. I appreciate the warning for the pictures! Lampreys do freak me out a little, and I have a tendency to click on translator’s notes without thinking much about what I’ll be seeing. Thanks!

  7. I thought something similar to kraken as well it makes sense😊that is so scary tho I wonder how mermaid ML gonna handle it he might need help 😢❤

  8. No, please, if it’s not a bother, continue with the pictures and the notes. I enjoy reading them and learning stuff!

    Thank you for translating!

  9. Thank you! I really appreciate the notes 😄 it helps solidify the image in my brain. Lamprays are literal nightmares though 😯😱 no thank you!

  10. Amongst all the stories I’ve read, this one caught my attention. The writer is very imaginative and the translation was good, I was able to visualize the action scenes vividly. Good job, Cheonsa. I can’t wait to read the rest of the chapters.

  11. I really look forward to the day when Desharow won’t be like a damsel in distress anymore. It’s getting really frustrating seeing him so helpless. I guess I’m just so used to OP mc lol

  12. I really love your notes!! It makes things less complicated ^^

Thank you for the chapter !!

  13. That thing looks more disgusting than disturbing 🤮

  14. thanks for the translation and notes. really enjoy your work 😊

  15. Just skimming through chapters before i properly get into it from the start. I’ll stop my browsing here and will go back to chapter 1 to read properly and clearly. I’ve been following RSCB on this site as well so i have so many things to read. I just want to say that you are the most nicest translator ever. You’ve kept the readers well informed with those T/N and you’re so polite and patient and nice in general to some readers who may come across as rude, even though you’ve warned us all that this novel is not for everybody and have disturbing themes and problematic contents. There’s still some who still read it while obviously having problems with it and continue to whine in the comments (talking about chapters where ppl complain about those graphic scenes) You’re so patient and nice with them all in general and i greatly admired that. You also reminded us and urged us to support the author by purchasing the novel if we can, i really like that. And your translation is great too. As expected Chrysanthemum Garden is my favourite place to be when reading BL and the likes, you translators are all polite and nice in general and so patient even when you might have come across rude readers. I truly applaud the whole team. Thank you all! The images kind of scared me but i click everyone of them cause i can take it. Its just nice that you put a warning for everything, that is really thoughtful. And thank you for being patient with us all.
  16. the images are quite helpful to me as someone who needs a mental image to understand a situation and the notes make it easier to immerse myself in the story! thank you for the detailed notes and translation 🙂

  17. I searched online what “lamprey” looks like…

Puke it looks like a leech, its mouth and teeth like a leech and it feeds on fish blood and suck on like a leech shudders..

  18. Right!! When i read the description about the monster and tentacles, I imagined some creature like the Kraken aa well.

Ahh Agares left Desharow to deal with the monster. I’m hoping that Desharow won’t make any other stupid move again that would make the situation worse.

Thank you for the effort dear translator & editors 💖
