Early next morning.

Xiao Lan and Gu Shengan sat at the table as they ate breakfast, but Zhao Fan didn’t appear even after a long while. XQhZOk

The people from the alumni gathering had arrived as well. When Du Yuhui saw the two of them, she smiled maliciously. “Where are your other friends? Why didn’t they come with you?”

Cheng Lang frowned and tugged at her sleeve.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Du Yuhui shook off his hand. “What?! Can’t I ask?”

She then turned back to give Xiao Lan and Gu Shengan a nasty look and mouthed “you’re done for” as she revelled in their misfortune. BW58vo

Xiao Lan understood now that this person was the type who would create trouble for no good reason. She felt at ease when she could make other people uncomfortable — in short, she lacked a beating from society.

Xiao Lan smoothly snatched up a chopstick next to him and flung it at Du Yuhui.

Du Yuhui only felt a gust of cold wind blow past her cheek, followed by the “du” sound of something hitting the wall. She turned around stiffly, and saw a chopstick stuck firmly in the wall.

Her face paled. What kind of monster was this person? Some martial arts expert or some genetic freak?

Xiao Lan looked at her. “If Miss Du doesn’t know how to speak like a person, I can teach you.”

Du Yuhui didn’t even dare sit her ass down, and was dragged off by Cheng Lang with a stiff face.

At that moment, Zhao Fan walked in from outside. His whole body was drenched and was still giving off steam, as if he had fallen into the hot spring. He didn’t go get food, and simply stood in the centre of the dining hall.

Zhao Fan’s head was down as he said stiffly, “Tonight… no one… should think… about leaving…” XovACl

His voice was dull and hoarse, and didn’t have the slightest feel of a living person. Everyone present felt their backs go cold when they heard it. For one moment, the dining hall was extremely quiet as everyone’s breathing turned shallow.

After Zhao Fan said this, he turned and left with wooden steps.

“She… really won’t come look for us?” Fu Wenbo asked uneasily in a low voice.

“What, don’t believe me?” Zhang Jie said with displeasure. Aw43qZ

Fu Wenbo was embarrassed. “No, no.”

“Relax ba. Tonight, definitely nothing will happen to us,” Zhang Jie said quietly, before she gave Xiao Lan a fearful glance and left hurriedly. She wasn’t as foolish as Du Yuhui to go over and provoke him.

After watching them leave.

Gu Shengan asked Xiao Lan with a worried face, “Xiao ge, what should we do next? It sounds like tonight is the last day.” YuA6Pm

Xiao Lan: “Go find Zhang Jie; since she’s the reason Gu Mo is coming after us, we’ll settle it through her.”

However, the matter was more troublesome than they had anticipated. Xiao Lan realised that these five people were now sticking together all the time. After they ate their meals, they would immediately enter the room on the second floor together and no longer come out after that.

It wasn’t as if they couldn’t expose the group directly… but Xiao Lan didn’t know what that spiritual tool was, and they couldn’t kill NPCs either. So, that group only needed to keep their mouths shut and drag things out until tonight, and Xiao Lan and Gu Shengan would die. VMcDOF

Xiao Lan hid on the balcony next door the entire day and observed the movements of the five people.

Xiao Lan looked at the bored and anxious Gu Shengan next to him, who had finally started to pick his nails. Recalling Gu Shengan’s slag fighting strength that couldn’t even break down a door, Xiao Lan gave up on the unrealistic idea of coordinating with this guy. He turned to Luo. “Help me create a bit of a disturbance; it would be best if you can lure them out.”

Hindered by the presence of another person, it was inconvenient for Luo to speak. The black cat which had initially been occupying the table merely nodded, then turned and left the room, even opening the door himself.

Gu Shengan was dumbstruck. “Where did this black cat of yours come from? It’s so amazing; it isn’t a rare item, right?”

Xiao Lan recalled how he and Luo met. “Uh… It was a gift when I was dealing with the supermarket’s unmarketable products.” H9hPzj

Gu Shengan thought he was lightening the atmosphere. “Haha, you’re really funny.”

Seeing his expression of obvious disbelief, Xiao Lan shook his head.

No one believed the truth nowadays.

After a moment. dAp5oV

A dense, black fog spread out from the hallway and poured into the room that the five people were in, even setting off the smoke detector. The sprinklers came on, frightening the people into leaping up.

“What’s happening?”

“There’s a fire!! It’s full of smoke outside!!”

“Let’s… run?” UROcBQ

“What run?! Don’t panic first; this smoke is too much of a coincidence. Some of us will go out and take a look. Zhang Jie and Teacher Yang should stay behind ba, and the rest of you follow me.”

Cheng Lang then brought Fu Wenbo and Du Yuhui out, leaving Yang Degao and Zhang Jie behind to wait uneasily in the room.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Yang Degao looked at the door anxiously and fearfully. He was getting along in years, and with his old arms and legs, he didn’t want to run. He then thought of the youth from last night, and felt even more apprehensive. He never thought that after enjoying a virtuous and prestigious reputation for most of his life, someone would actually grasp hold of such blackmail material on him towards the end. They — could it be that they wanted to do something to the spiritual tool?

Suddenly, Zhang Jie, who had been sitting not far away from him, collapsed. dsQRvE

Yang Degao was startled and turned his head to look — speak of the devil, and he appeared.

Fuck! Why is it you again?!

Xiao Lan had a faint, good-natured smile on his face. “Teacher Yang, first time meeting as strangers and second time as friends; should we exchange civilities or get straight to it?”

Yang Degao took two steps back. “You — what do you want? I’ve already told you everything I know!” S1Ggok

He then saw the youth in front of him reach out and take away the bolster in Zhang Jie’s embrace. Ripping it open directly, he then took out a palm-sized statue of God. The statue had a smile, but it didn’t give people a sense of peace and tranquillity, and instead had a sly aura.

Yang Degao instantly understood what it was. He yelled, “You can’t do this! You’ll kill me!!”

Xiao Lan reached out and swiftly covered his mouth. “Hush — Teacher Yang, did you forget who harmed who?”

Yang Degao stiffened, but the will to live still prevailed in his heart. He couldn’t let this person take the spiritual tool away; without it, they… they would all die. r0Fkie

He recalled Gu Mo’s limp, drooping head when she died, her deathly pale skin, and the thick smell of blood which nauseated him when he was dismembering her corpse.

“You —” Before Yang Degao could say anything, Xiao Lan had already brought his hand down in a blunt chop and knocked him out.

After that, Xiao Lan efficiently slung Zhang Jie over his shoulder and flipped out the window.

Leaving behind the miserable scene of a room that had been entered and robbed. ToY4 s

.

Xiao Lan and Gu Shengan kept running until they reached the hot springs and entered the locker room.

They didn’t return to their rooms since it would be very troublesome if they tangled with that group. They couldn’t kill NPCs, and would have to waste time tying them up one by one.

Looking at the setting sun outside the window, it now wasn’t far from nightfall. 9ulgKR

Xiao Lan placed the God statue on the table while Gu Shengan figured out how to wake Zhang Jie up.

Gu Shengan put on a fiendish expression. “Speak! How can the spiritual tool be undone?!”

Zhang Jie was still dazed when Gu Shengan roused her in a fright. However, when she clearly saw the people before her and the statue of God on the table, her expression changed, and she didn’t say a thing.

Gu Shengan threatened her several times, but Zhang Jie merely stared at him and still didn’t speak. sQXwOH

“Fuck!” Gu Shengan was twitchy. “Are you going to speak or not?! Do you think I won’t kill you?!”

Zhang Jie smiled disdainfully. “If I speak, I die; if I don’t, you die. Even if you guys kill me, you’ll still die, so why should I speak?”

Gu Shengan felt stifled and was just about to burst out cursing, when Xiao Lan stopped him. “Forget it. I didn’t expect her to be honest in the first place. I only took her along as a precaution against her performing any more tricks. Keep a close eye on her.”

Xiao Lan picked up the God statue and slammed it directly against the wall with incredible force. He was very strong, and left a large indent in the wall. The wall surface cracked as broken fragments drifted down, but the God statue was completely fine. sEtSK8

The God statue’s smile seemed to ridicule mortals for their powerlessness.

Seeing this, Zhang Jie smiled. “This is a tool personally created by a great master who chanted sutras every day. How can you destroy it so easily? Save your strength hahahaha.”

Xiao Lan’s eyebrow twitched. “Luo, shut her up.”

The cat that came and left without a trace found a musty old cleaning rag from somewhere and stuffed it right into Zhang Jie’s mouth with his paws. The rancid smell of decades-old cloth made Zhang Jie retch. utGfve

Gu Shengan gave a thumbs up in his heart.

The last of the sun’s vitality finally retreated on the horizon, to be replaced by a dark and gloomy sky.

“Drip drip —”

“Drip drip —” DT0KY2

The sound of water rang out of nowhere in the locker room, and the dripping was quicker than ever. This was a locker room which didn’t have any pipes at all, but water could already invade this place, which indicated that Gu Mo was already very strong now.

A water stain began to appear on the ceiling very rapidly, and would cover the entire space in probably less than a minute.

Mist began to fill the air in the room, mingled with the sulphuric scent unique to hot springs.

On the ceiling, the figure of a girl with her hair spread out gradually grew distinct. Her abnormally drooping head twisted around bit by bit, and was about to reveal her face. XzefIW

There was a sob in Gu Shengan’s voice. “Xiao — Xiao ge… Water…”

Xiao Lan glanced at the completely unharmed God statue, then slowly raised his hand. His fingernails were very neatly trimmed, and his slender fingers were just the right amount of bony; they looked clean and neat, and not the least bit lethal.

If it couldn’t be destroyed with an external force, then it would be fine to just break down the material from inside, right?

His hand gently covered the head of the God statue. The God statue, which initially hadn’t been the least bit damaged after being struck, turned to dust bit by bit as Xiao Lan pressed down, like a sandcastle meeting the rising tide.

Gu Shengan: “Whoa…” habRVu

“Nh!!!” Zhang Jie’s eyes opened unnaturally wide in disbelief. How was that possible?! The master had clearly said that whether it was knife or fire, this God statue simply couldn’t be damaged with external force!!

Reality proved that in the face of poverty, all supernatural beings were paper tigers.

A system notification appeared:

“Destroying a plot item, Gu Mo gives you praise.” 2C7Bda

“Poverty value increased by 3 million. Xiao Lan wields his poor economic status with unique elegance and grace.”

What an unexpected delight!

A violent wind suddenly blew through the locker room, dispelling the mist and spreading throughout the entire hotel. The eerie, wet and cold female voice seemed to resound in everyone’s ears:

“Yang Degao…” 9Qf2Ld

“Du Yuhui…”

“Zhang Jie…”

“Cheng Lang…”

“Fu Wenbo…” Wz2T9o

“I, have, returned…”

  1. Reality proved that in face of poverty, all supernatural beings were paper tigers

    Poverty is the best~

Thank you for the chapter!! ❤️❤️

  2. Should I be happy to be unemployed? (thanks to Covid 19). Maybe my poverty status will save me one day😂

  3. I think GM is replaying this instance with different groups because she’s making a sport out of hunting the 5. Sometimes she succeed, sometimes she fails, but every instance is different and is fun for her. Basically, she’s already a monster, so no need to be too sympathetic to her?

    • But isn’t it still awful to be doomed to relive the same instance endlessly for all eternity or at least as long as the event world exists, which could be centuries? She can never leave this small space. Never have someone love her. Never have her revenge end for once and all. She has become a monster, a monster driven by instinct and does not have free will/agency. It’s unlike the boss of the previous instance. I find it sad and pitiful.

      • I agree it’s sad, but maybe at this point her original mind might have already been degraded until this monster is what’s left of her. She’s no longer sane and sympathising with her might hurt you instead.

Not sure if the 5 guys are actually NPCs, but if they are that means they’re already dead. Venting her anger on them for a few rounds is understandable, but replaying this like a game for thousands of times is a big problem.

I can only hope her soul has long moved on and found peace, and this is just a shell left behind.

        • I suppose it’s kind of like those sad and pitiful children who were abused but grew up to be terrible and horrifying serial killers. They are unable to stop once they start killing, just like this girl. (I was going through a true crime phase and ended up reading weird stuff.😓) I obviously wouldn’t want to be in the same area as them, and prefer they were behind bars or dead, but I still felt sad for their lost potential and angry at the bad decisions of those around them that pushed these children into such a black pit.

I also hope these are remnants of spiritual energy and not actual souls. I think event world harvests energy from dead players through these
instances, and sometimes players can become NPCs/employees – willing or
unwillingly – to help maintain the system. I don’t think the event world would be generous enough to leave behind the whole soul for this purpose. (Chinese souls have several parts after all). Luo is also probably a bigger soul fragment and is slowly able to become fuller/stronger after absorbing the extra spirit energy leaked/rewarded after instances. I do wonder if he was inedible in the first place.

  4. YESS, DROWN THEM, DISMEMBER THEM, KILL THEM, YOU GO QUEENNNNNNNN!!!!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️

THANKS FOR ALL THE HARD WORKKKKKK!!!!~~~~ ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
