Xu Qichen was a little confused.

He didn’t understand the meaning of that kiss or why he didn’t resist. H4PCdj

It felt like there was something controlling him. Every time he met Lin Ran, he wasn’t himself.

This kind of feeling appeared again after ten years, making him wish that time would simply stop, if only for just a moment, even if it meant that he would never return to reality.

Chrysanthemum Garden.

Lin Ran had originally planned to wait till the sunrise here, but it began raining suddenly. The rain of a coastal city has immense destructive power. So the two could only escape on the bicycle; like being engaged in an embarrassing kind of romance.

After taking a hot shower back at the hotel, Xu Qichen wiped the water droplets off the mirror and stared at the face that didn’t belong to him, thinking of Lin Ran’s kiss. lMjbAW

His heart suddenly felt desolate.

“0901, are you sleeping?”

0901: “Mr. Xu, I’m an AI, I don’t need sleep.”

Xu Qichen: “Oh. Do you think Lin Ran already likes me?”

Z3cV8l

0901: “Mr. Xu, this is against the rules.”

Xu Qichen: “I’m just looking for someone to chat with.”

0901: “You can ask Lin Ran.”

Xu Qichen’s first reaction was a firm rejection in his heart. “He’s very difficult to understand. I can never tell if he’s serious or joking.” oC94Wv

0901: “Have you never met anyone like that before?”

Xu Qichen did not reply.

The system once again produced the reward interface. The reward this time was 2000 points. Xu Qichen accepted the points, his mind still a mess.

He felt that everything was going too smoothly. xhMfRk

It’s clearly his task to make Lin Ran fall in love with him, but why does it feel like he was the passive one?

Did Lin Ran like him so easily?

Why couldn’t he find an answer that sounded convincing to himself?

What if Lin Ran doesn’t really like him, but only got too deep into the character and lost control? XIEb2h

Or what if he’s simply playing?

The result of too much thinking was making Xu Qichen feel more and more uncertain. He lay on the bed but couldn’t fall asleep no matter how much he tossed and turned. Before he knew it, he was watching the sky get brighter.

This resulted in him falling into deep sleep the moment he got on the plane.

After hesitating for half a day, a first-class air stewardess walked up to Lin Ran, “Master Lin Ran, I- I’m your fan, can we take a photo together?” jkDuUm

Lin Ran readily agreed. He stood up to take a photo with two stewardesses when he noticed that the other one’s gaze was constantly straying towards the deeply-asleep Xu Qichen, who was on the seat beside Lin Ran’s.

“He didn’t sleep well yesterday.” The plane was very cold. Recalling that they were caught in the rain last night, Lin Ran smiled at the stewardess, “Could I trouble you to get me a blanket?”

The stewardess nodded promptly, “Okay, one moment.” She soon returned and handed a blanket to Lin Ran. With light movements, Lin Ran placed the blanket on Xu Qichen, who curled deeper into the blanket. The cap on his head fell off, exposing his messy bed hair.

The plane flew for over ten hours, and Xu Qichen slept for the entirety of those ten hours. He was woken by Zhang Xiaoxiao only when it was time to disembark. His hair was in a terrible mess after sleeping, so he could only push it all back and hold it down with the cap. 0deytG

Still muddled from sleep, everything Li Yun had previously emphasised about airport fashion was cleanly forgotten by Xu Qichen. He walked out without sunglasses or makeup, unlike Lin Ran, who walked in front of him with perfect style and smile.

A fan shouted: “Mengze-gege, did you sleep on the plane?”

Xu Qichen turned around and saw a young lady filming him with her handphone. He inclined his head in mild embarrassment, “How did you know?” BIa 8R

“On the right side of your face there’s a mark left from sleeping ah.”

Everyone around them laughed loudly. Xu Qichen laughed along with them while rubbing his cheek.. When he turned back, he could no longer see Lin Ran. With so many people around him, Xu Qichen looked around anxiously.

“Gege, what are you looking for?”

Xu Qichen: “En… Where’s Lin Ran?” oGhYQi

The young ladies around him suddenly started screaming, making Xu Qichen shiver in fright.

Did he say something wrong?

“There, there! Gege, Lin Ran is there!”

“Oh, thanks, I see him.” Xu Qichen quickly made his way towards Lin Ran through the crowd. KOTGUk

By the time they reached the hotel arranged by the Shanghai crew, Xu Qichen was so tired that his bones felt out of place. How could these young ladies have so much energy.

The temperature in Shanghai was not much lower than that in Nice, yet it felt even stuffier.

Story translated by Chrysanthemum Garden.

However, despite changing locations, the high efficiency of the crew did not change. Everyone was ready in the shortest possible time.

“Nan Ke, Scene 51, Take 1. Action!” yUmbXZ

“Pa!”

The office is busy and chaotic.

With great focus, Nan Ke finishes up the last part of the interview draft, then collapses on his swivel chair.

So tired. dm AvX

“Nan Ke!”

He has barely rested for half a minute before his supervisor calls his name. Nan Ke sits up and replies, “What is it?”

The supervisor is sweating furiously. Making a detour around a large group of colleagues who are discussing manuscripts, he finally arrives at Nan Ke’s desk. “Gina has gone to the emergency department of the hospital for appendicitis, and you have to take over her interview, quickly!”

Nan Ke is obviously reluctant, “But I already have an appointment later, it’s almost time…” kN9wRM

The supervisor waves his hands, “That doesn’t matter, I’ll ask Xiao Chen to go in your place.” He puts a file on Nan Ke’s desk. “The other party took almost two months to agree to this interview, it’s his first interview in China!”

Nan Ke glances at the information. The interviewee is a writer. “Nathan? French?”

“That’s right. An up-and-coming rookie in the literary circle. You and Gina are the only ones who can communicate in French. Since she’s down, you’re the only one who can do this. Don’t worry, I’ll get others to cover your work, all you have to do is get going straight away!”

As the backbone of the magazine, this is not the first time that Nan Ke is experiencing ‘chasing the duck onto the shelf’. SjIg7O

“Should I bring a camera?”

“No, he said he’s unwilling to be exposed and only does text interviews.”

He drives to the appointed location, which is a five-star hotel. He is only allowed in after he explains his purpose at the front desk.

Presidential suite! This writer is not simple at all. jPXCh

Since entering the media industry, Nan Ke has been so busy that he barely had any time for himself, reading has become a luxury. Thus, he is unfamiliar with this Nathan. However, judging by his manner, he is probably a classic romantic French novelist.

At the door, Nan Ke tidies himself up, then presses the doorbell.

Please visit chrysanthemumgarden (dot) com

No reply.

After a moment, he presses it again. U2MA6d

As before, no reply.

Repeat about six times.

There is finally some sound from the other side of the door; a clattering noise, as if something has been knocked over.

The door opens. iTAR d

“Hello, I’m Nan Ke from XX Magazine…”

The instant he sees the other party, the self-introduction that he couldn’t be more familiar with gets stuck in his throat.

The person before him is not the blond, blue-eyed Frenchman he was expecting, but a thin and pale man with black hair. The white shirt on him is half open, as though he had only just thrown it on. He smells of hard liquor and cologne. Leaning on the door, the eyebrows covered by his fringe are furrowed, and he slowly slides down to the floor.

He raises his head and looks up at Nan Ke. Due to his hangover, his reaction is much slower than that of a normal person. He squints his eyes. The moment he finally sees the outline of the reporter’s face clearly, his pupils contract. z1FUgc

Quickly, he regains his expression of insensibility and smiles and greets him in French, “Hello, I’m Nathan.”

With much effort, he gets to his feet and finally stands up steadily. He pushes back his slightly long hair and smiles at Nan Ke, who is still in shock. Then, in Mandarin, he says, “Of course, you can also call me Yu Ning, if you prefer.”

When Nan Ke does not reply, Yu Ning breaks the awkward silence by turning around, stumblingly making his way to the window past the knocked-over furniture, and opening the curtains. The bright sunlight makes him subconsciously cover his eyes.

Then he pulls up two chairs and points at one of them, “Please have a seat.” He produces the appointment letter from who-knows-where, “If I remember correctly, the reporter representing your magazine should have been a girl.” 7HewLz

Nan Ke closes the door and takes a seat. “Yes, I’m only temporarily covering for her.”

Yu Ning raises an eyebrow. “My apologies, I remembered the wrong date and went out last night…” He shrugs. “Whatever, I’m sober now, it won’t affect your work.”

Grasping the recording pen in his hand tightly, Nan Ke can barely hear a word Yu Ning said, his focus firmly on the hickies on his collarbone, the bruises on his wrists, and the complete disorder of the suite.

Yu Ning leans back on the chair, looking at him. 5jEaIB

“Aren’t you starting?”

“CUT!” Director Chen, who was sitting behind the monitor, suddenly yelled for them to stop, then he walked up to them. “Yu Ning, you have to be in the state of using false appearances to cover up your emotions, you have to grasp this point properly.”

Xu Qichen nodded and took a deep breath. The difference between the Yu Ning of seven years ago and the one of seven years after was simply too big. Acting this out would be a challenge for any actor, let alone himself, who was still a newbie.

He looked at Lin Ran. Lin Ran was playing with the recording pen in his hand. When he felt Xu Qichen looking at him, he looked up. odUhzq

“How can you get into the state so easily?” Xu Qichen seeked advice from him very seriously.

“What state?”

“Nan Ke’s state ah,” Xu Qichen explained, “You immediately jumped out from the scene from a few days ago and landed right into the emotions of post-reunion Nan Ke.”

Lin Ran smiled without speaking. CuMBmZ

He couldn’t possibly say that when he saw Xu Qichen looking so debauched, he got so angry that his emotions came up without having to act ba.

“Are you still immersed in the dream from seven years ago?” Lin Ran suddenly spoke.

His expression held a hint of fierce scorn. “Those were all fake. The ambiguity was fake, liking you was also fake, there was only you stupidly trying to stuff your heart into my hands. Your attitude when I left was so ugly, at least you’re more restrained now. Did it take so many years for you to learn to be more presentable?”

Seeing Xu Qichen begin to frown, Lin Ran continued: “Did you really think someone would like you? What is there to like about you? Your face? Or the ignorant naivete of your youth? Stop dreaming! That was just a mutual comfort of convenience, it can’t even be called liking.” 4Ov36a

Xu Qichen’s eyes darkened, and his thoughts seemed to be far away from here. Lin Ran immediately changed his tone, “Remember the sadness you feel now, you have to hate Nan Ke.”

Xu Qichen looked up at Lin Ran, who gave him a warm smile. “What I said before, none of it is true.”

On one hand, he wanted him to understand the feeling of being hurt by someone, on the other, his heart ached when he really became upset.

How troublesome. UJQxKZ

“Let’s try again!”

“Nan Ke, Scene 68, Take 2. Action!”

“Pa!”

At the sound of the board, Xu Qichen began to smile, while Lin Ran’s face slowly merged with the face from his memory. yUwt0A

“Aren’t you starting, Mr. Reporter?”

Nan Ke’s knuckles have turned white from holding the recorder too tightly. He looks down and opens the question manuscript prepared by his colleague in advance. “The narrative tone of your new book, ‘The City of Weariness’, is rather gloomy. Many readers commented that they felt a strong sense of loneliness after reading it. However, in your introduction, only the sentence “this is a love story” is written, so does this reflect your… view on love…”

Chrysanthemum Garden.

He did not expect the very first question Gina prepared would make one feel so awkward.

Yu Ning looks at Nan Ke with his head tilted. “Every book I wrote reflects my view on love.” He laughed. “Everyone has different opinions about love. For me… it’s probably a Chinese idiom. ” GrvCgW

Yu Ning smiles, continuing, “The bird afraid of the bow.”

“My view on love is very negative, one can say, I’m that bird.”

Nanke lowers his head. The words on the question sheet seem to be spinning. He spends a lot of effort to focus on it, “You describe the state of depression very realistically in the novel. How do you get the material in the process of creation?”

“Has no one mentioned before that illnesses like depression have a soft spot for writers?” After saying this and seeing Nan Ke’s expression change, Yu Ning laughs. With the sun shining on him, he looks almost the same as the youth of the past. P Iqb1

“Just kidding. I just try my best to express the anxiety and depression buried in my heart, that’s all.”

They continue this way, going through the manuscript questions one by one. Yu Ning is unexpectedly cooperative and time flowed by quietly.

Nan Ke closes the manuscript and asks the last question.

“Your readers are all very curious, what are your inspirations?” 5BifP3

“Inspiration…” Yu Ning spaces out, “Alcohol? Large amounts of alcohol. And… I’m not sure if you can write it in…”

Yu Ning’s eyes land on Nan Ke. Meeting his gaze, he silently mouths a word.

It’s an English word, the shape of his mouth looks like he is smiling.

‘Sex’. nampGS

Nan Ke immediately pauses the recording.

Yu Ning has an expression of confusion. Even as the other party walks up to him and grasps his collar with two shaking hands, he keeps the expression of uncertainty on his face. “Mr. Reporter, why are you angry?”

“The me who was left behind by you without a word until today, is still smiling.”

  1. He’s hurt,,,, so he doesn’t want to get hurt again. I think Xu Qichen’s past is the reason all his novels were BE

  2. When Lin Ran said all those things about 7 years ago, even though it was just to help Qichen get in character….ouch, i felt that. I wonder what happened between these two before tho….

    Thanks for the chapter! 🙂

  3. Can some one please tell me who said the last line and what it means? If Nan Me ever got released.. I would never watch it because otherwise I will cry 😭.

    Thanks for the Chapter!

  4. Does the film have and HE too? I really hope it has..

Thank you for the chapter!!! ❤️❤️

  5. Does anyone know the actual plot of Nan Ke?

Correct me If I am wrong but it went like:YN and NK met at a coffee shop where NK was working. YN had a crush on NK and used to meet him occasionally. After an argument with parents YN met with NK at his house cuz he had no where else to go. They kissed and started a relationship. NK did not have feelings for YN and just played along for some fun but slowly started falling for YN ( I think?). NK left one day to Shanghai without informing YN and YN was devastated. YN becomes a famous author and NK becomes a journalist. NK and YN meet seven years later where YN has changed from shy, naive, innocent boy to mature, depressed person.

That’s all I have till now..Is there anything more?

    • That’s pretty much it. NK leaving YN without giving a proper reason – In fact, it seems he gave a ‘It was only you being foolish, it was a game for me’ speech, thus breaking YN from the beauty of youth to someone addicted to inebriation and touch in order to grasp onto the remaining straws of life. Irrevocably, they do say that art finds itself difficult to arise in absence of true heartache. Sigh.

  6. This matryoshka doll of stories is really impressive…in Xu Qichen’s novel, the main character acts in a movie about a man who’s a writer of depressing love stories. I think that it’s impressive how clearly on every layer he’s writing his own thoughts, and his own past. The feeling of being unloved and unloving is on every layer, although they manifest differently—Yu Ning writes depression while living in debauchery, Ji Mengze is disliked for lacking skill and making money off of things without substance, Xu Qichen writes story after story he can’t imagine a happy ending to while unable to connect with others.

Lin Ran saying those words out like that…even though he was helping Xu Qichen understand his character, Xu Qichen wrote Yu Ning, who could understand better than him? But he likes to meet things with equanimity, while Yu Ning turned his pain into destructiveness. It wasn’t that he didn’t know what Yu Ning was feeling, but that only Lin Ran practically reenacting the situation that made Xu Qichen write a story like this in the first place would make him reflexively feel it the same way. Ah, Xu Qichen, my heart really hurts for you, incapable of believing Lin Ran is sincere in his liking… At least we get hilarious Lin Ran POV on “haha…acting, right… definitely not actually mad over some makeup…”Thank you so much for translating! <3

    • yes!! Im so impressed with the details! its one thing to present such a clear backstory inbetween the lines of mc having no faith in love, being insecure in his talents and unable to think of happy endings on multiple layers, but being the actual author and being able to present those layers from an even further perspective… I have so much respect for this??? its done really well?? I love that it looks like the transmigration is there to force mc to confront his fears and grow and develop from them!! super impressive character work

  7. Aiiii I love the dogblood, bring it on.

Btw, do you know that until recently, I thought your profile picture was a creepy black-haired woman in a turtleneck lying down? I only just realized it’s a cute doll reading a manuscript 🤦‍♀️😂
