Not sure if I’m right, but i think the guy they are pertaining as ‘daydreamer’ is dead. At the early part of the story, where they are recruiting people, they met an author, right? And that person, together with the philosopher, is not recruited. I think the description they used (a bag with his poem book and pillow) is a way of telling that he went on his journey to the other side of the world.
